So, I went back and rewatched what I could find of the Browns War Room after the picks.  After the first pick they smile for the camera.  After the 2nd pick they're laughing at what is going on on the iphone (perhaps the drafted player's celebration)...but pretty much after that they were all quite subdued celebrations...as if a little something since the cameras are there recording.

So, I agree, the war room reaction should not indicate it was a Haslem pick.  I think that it just came down to the point where, hey, Shedeur is available here in the 5th round.  He and his entourage have been beaten into a humbled status.  Is it worth our 5th & 6th round picks to throw him at our biggest need in the organization?  And the collective answer came back as yes.

Drafts can take on a life of their own.  They can start twisting and turning...and before ya know it, what went around comes back around in a little different light.

The War Room reaction may also have been intention. They're not going to treat Sanders like any special pick.  He's a day 3 selection, minimum investment.

So if he acts out of turn, doesn't appear committed or gives the coaches grief, it's nothing in terms of cost, draft capital and personnel investment to cut him immediately.

It's a great way to setup the understanding of the power dynamic.   The Browns staff is saying that we run the show, you're a late draft pick and that's it.

    👍

  • The reaction to the Shedur pick is completely overblown.

The FO/Coaches spent months preparing for the draft.  The week leading up had to be massive amount of office time and time away from their normal life in settings outside of the football field and then three intense days smiling for cameras meeting new players.  After all this I’ll cut them all some slack if they left out a fist pump

My issue with Sanders isn’t his physical attributes, it lies between his ears.

I think daddy played a big role in his mental development…or lack there of.

I believe the Browns said they wanted “an adult” in the locker room when they dumped Mayfield. ?

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Him becoming a 5th round pick will fix that, if it doesn't little loss in dumping a 5th round pick.

It’s not so much the wasted 5th round pick, it’s the clown show that will likely follow.

I love old sayings.  They make so much sense.

The hope I have is that he's now come to the realization that he's coming into this league as a 5th round pick.  Lots of other QB's were picked before him, including one selected 2 rounds earlier on the team that finally drafted him.  No matter who his Dad is, he's going to have to prove that he shouldn't get cut at final roster cuts.  He's never had to face that before.

We don’t really know that. I remember Deion Sanders best as a baseball player. Played for my Reds a couple years. Not a superstar on the diamond but he could definitely steal some bags. These are just the memories of a kid mind you.

I don’t know where this narrative of Deion as an overbearing father came from. I’m sure there are quotes and memes, but l haven’t followed it all.

He was a cocky mofo for sure on the field, you kinda have to be. And he parlayed that in to a broadcasting career. But he also took the time to invest in his kid, and normally we would see that as a heartwarming thing.

Deion knows what it takes to make it at the highest level of a couple sports. I don’t understand why he would spend the time to coach his son only to sabotage his career. That doesn’t make sense to me.

  • You know, the more I think about it, the more I think the Browns might be addicted to QB drama.

I just have to remind myself that he's just a fifth rounder.

    Catch and, if needed, release.

The guy invested his time coaching his kid from pop warner through college, l understand him wanting to impose his will a little bit and be a part of the first meeting. But Deion also knows what it takes to make it in the NFL and l don’t see him as a guy who would jeopardize his son’s chances, especially with how the draft went down.

Of course he doesn’t think he’s jeopardizing his son’s career, but it is painfully obvious he and his son have turned off people every place they go.

When Will Howard meets with Mike Tomlin next week, will Ryan Day be in the room with them? Will Will Howard’s father be there?

  • From a fan perspective, the QB situation is almost ideal under the circumstances. It’s basically a QB competition year  so you need guys to compete and push each other.

We got Flacco the tepid fan favorite savvy vet who throws a real pretty spiral. He’s all gangly looking moving around and it reminds me of Bernie Kosar and l love that about him.

And we got Kenny Pickett, the experienced castoff from another team.

And Dillon Gabriel, the accomplished short guy rookie, who was drafted before…

Shedeur Sanders, the also accomplished rookie who now has a big chip on his shoulder.

  • [3:49] is pretty good.

That's JT O'Sullivan who was a backup in the league for over a decade.

For sure that was part of it. I almost think we witnessed a live action rendition of the Draft Day plot line, where (spoiler alert) one team doesn’t pick the expected guy and it causes a domino effect.

I’ve never seen anything like it for a guy that was previously picked so high to fall so low, and of course he landed on my team.

Draft days have to be the worst for the front office. It’s spending 3 days cramped in a room with your boss. Who wants to deal with that?

I’m sure the enthusiasm wanes as the hours roll on.

and, another qb controversy brewing? Deion says this? So, with two picks in the first round next year, I'd say, let him show what he can do in the exhibition season, and trade him to someone who lost a backup qb. Maybe Deion should become a HC in the pros, like in Dallas, and start Shadeur. "...don't take no backseat..."

wow. Maybe he will refuse to sign with the Browns without a guaranteed contract...

  • I liked Deion as a DB and wherever else teams were willing to try him, but he wasn't the QB and he wasn't on my team.

After the Johnny/Mayfield-OBJ/Watson drama the last thing we need is papa Deion helicopter.

But, he was a 5th round pick. I want to enjoy our other draft picks and not spend anymore time on Sanders.

  • Listening to Steve Pallazollo and Sam Monson on youtube give their top 5 teams, they go directly back to the Browns after listing each of theirs and Monson made a great comment that really summed it up. He said if they had reversed the positions of when they took Sanders and Gabriel, you would have said the Browns knocked this ball right out of the park as the best draft of 2025 with the addition of a great DT, LB, 2 excellent RBs and Fannin plus 2 1st rounders next year. That comment hits the nail on the head exactly. They desperately need a QB and are bringing in two new ones to compete for the position giving them a greater likelihood of finally landing the QB position correctly. I agree completely with their assessment. And additionally they said so what if it was a weird way to get there, "That's a great haul!"
