5 QB’s In The Room

The Browns Board

  • Nathan Zegura said Dillon Gabriel was the number two quarterback on the Browns board after Cam Ward.

He said Gabriel wins the way Kevin Stefanski wants his quarterback to win.
    - Great decision maker
    - Accurate from the pocket
    - Can throw on the move from both directions
    - Excellent pocket movement

Stefanski also told Zegura that, while they were watching the tape, the team kept asking, “Where does the height show up?”

The biggest knock against Gabriel is his height, which is listed at 5’11”. But his smaller stature didn’t prevent him from being the most productive quarterback in college football history.

    Zegura said:

“If Dillon Gabriel is 6’3”, he probably is the number two [overall] pick in this draft.”

It’s crazy to think that four inches could be the only difference between being the number two pick in the draft and going late in the third round.

But if that’s truly the case, then the Browns got a legitimately talented quarterback at a serious value.

This guy has been pretty freakin good no matter where he's played.  Here's some research I cut and pasted for us before the draft.

  • A little off topic, but I keep hearing the media say "I can't understand what the Browns are doing at QB?"  And to some extent it's perfectly reasonable.  The browns have earned a lot of criticisms, especially at QB.  But there is one team that is in a worse or comparable situation depending on how you look at it.

    Shittsburgh

The media tends to ignore them on this topic, but Tomlin, nor the FO, has really had a visible plan to fix it.  Rodgers is a bandaid at best if they sign him and not much better than Flacco at this point.  Randolph sucks to the point they drafted Pickett.

The fact they always hover around .500 means they won't be drafting in the range that the franchise talent gets drafted without trading away the future.

Again, I get it, the Browns have earned this, but whether you like the plan or not, the Browns appear to have one.  The Steelers seem content to teabag themselves and the media just ignores it.

Back to the topic, the only QB I know for sure will be on the team this season is Gabriel.   Pickett is likely gone, but stranger things have happened.

Apparently, their plan was to acquire draft assets to get the franchise QB next year and possibly draft his backup this year.  And the plan almost worked...except nobody drafted Sanders.  So much for the plan.  We're now into plan B....

All that plan A for Klubnik?  The last time Clemson lost less than 4 games was in 2021 so if he's the missing football messiah to our journey - I need the type of proof that teams can't beat him.  The same ACC made a 1st round draft pick out of Pickett in 2022. One can rack up a lot of junk-time stats in that Conference these days with UGA Head Coach Kirby Smart making sure he prevents a lot of high school recruits from leaving the state of Georgia for college football in the ACC. Pickett is here now as is another former ACC QB as is another former Clemson QB that actually was tough to beat before he led the Houston Texans to the playoffs twice and erased a deficit to beat Josh Allen's Bills. Looked like the trouble in Houston hit after during/after he was officially crowned king in that football program before the Cleveland Browns signed up to take on 100% of the karma and punishment.  If that wasn't enough - they committed/guaranteed a 230 million $ salary to do so.  The good news is the Browns are finally back to drafting in the 1st round again.   Let's see what happens with the group of QBs they have right now.  Here's Klubnik's stats below, which looked good in 2024 - but against who and how much of that was junk-time stats for a team that lost 4 games?  Is it worthy of tanking for?  They drafted Baker after tanking - and the last season he played he was throwing 41 TD passes for Tampa Bay.  Gotta tell ya - it's tough to get pumped up for another tank job in Cleveland under this ownership.

    It's so fucking irritating.

They were this fucking close to actually pulling off a concise plan of attack regarding the QB position.

    1. Put Watson on IR, thus freeing a roster space. CHECK.

    2. Trading DTR and letting Winston go. CHECK and CHECK.

    3. Get two veteran QBs. CHECK and CHECK.

    4. Trade down from #2, pick up another first round pick in 2026. HUGE CHECK.

    5. Draft a mid-round QB to be the eventual #2 guy. CHECK. (Perhaps too early for Gabriel, but whatever).

    THEY PULLED IT ALL OFF!

    And then...

Now regarding the '26 Draft, I don't see Arch Manning coming out. He could, but he would only have less than 20 college starts and he comes from money and would get paid a boatload of money to play college football in 2026.

But I will have my eyes on Garrett Nussmeier (LSU), Cade Klubnik (Clemson), LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina) and Drew Allar (Penn State). Someone else might emerge... hell, Carson Beck might re-emerge down in Miami.

1st of all, who names their kid Arch?  Yup, definitely not enough starts.  But lineage would drive up his value.  I don't know what the '27 QB draft class looks like, but '26 could be a competitive environment for QB's.

It seems like drafting Sanders screwed everything up.  And it could've.  But we still DO have the draft capital for the '26 QB round robin.  And we have the 2nd hardest schedule.  We will have to see how Stef does with these 2 rookie QB's.  It's not really fair to give a rookie QB one season to prove whether he's worth hanging onto or not.  And we have TWO to evaluate.

The way I see it is...they have to decide if either of them is good enough for them to NOT draft a QB next season.  Now if it's Shedeur that becomes the starter, then Gabriel would probably be kept as the backup.  But if Gabriel becomes the starter, then probably Sanders would have to go as his Daddy would probably raise a fuss that his son ain't no backup!

If the decision is to go ahead and draft the best 1st round QB they can get then Gabriel would probably have to be the backup (unless he flat out sucks).  And Sanders would have to go.  If Gabriel sucks and Sanders isn't much better then they'll both have to go and we'll look for a veteran backup and a development QB to eventually be the backup.

It'll be an interesting thing to watch unfold.  (if not painful)  ?

In reading a lot about Allar and Klubnik - Klunick is compared to ...like a more athletic Baker Mayfield. Allar is often compared to Josh Allen. Interesting pair of qbs.

  • We've positioned ourselves with 2 first round picks in next year's draft.  They can be used for a QB.  Or they can be used for an OT and a WR...or...a this and a that.  But now,  next year's draft is a long time away and no longer has anything to do with this season.

To the 5 QB's in the room:   One QB is injured and will probably spend the season on IR.  And if he heals up early, we send our pal Knuckles to see to it that he has a medical setback.

4 QB's in the room:   Two are rookies who won't get cut.  One is an old vet and one is a young vet that we traded DTR and a 5th round pick for.  I'm guessing that the old vet is the odd man out.

3 QB's in the room:   Pickett (or Flacco, if I guessed wrong) opens as the starting QB.  Gabriel the backup and Sanders #3.

The hope:   In short order, Gabriel takes over as starter, leads us to a playoff birth and ends our QB search.  (or, if we glitched into an alternate universe, Sanders leads us to the playoffs with Gabriel as the backup)

THEN, the draft comes and we have 2 first round picks instead of our usual zero.  ?

My guess is Flacco is retained to teach the two rookies as each gets a fair shot at being "THE QB". Pickett will have to play far, far better in practices than he did at Pitt. Otherwise he's toast. Flacco will be like Kubiak was for Elway, the coach on the bench giving constructive feedback as the games progress.

He did do a fairly good job in Philly when Hurst went down for a couple / few (?) weeks after taking on a tackler during a scramble run.

I’m guessing they’ll end up trading Pickett, doesn’t really make sense with 2 rookies and Flacco now.

Flacco makes too much sense as the veteran given how knowledgeable he is of the kubiak/stefanski style offense.

That makes sense, but then again, the Browns went after Pickett and traded for him as soon as they could, while Flacco sat at home for months before the Browns finally pulled the trigger on bringing him back. On the surface, it seems like the Browns were more interested in Pickett than Flacco.

But if both are given an even chance to win the starting job, you gotta think Joe wins, right?

The QB situation will keep the local Browns beat busy all summer long. Should be interesting to see unfold.
