  • Florio on Pickett is spot on (doe's anyone say spot on anymore ? or is it passe ? i think the latter

  • ...this is good to see since it seems to imply that things are not done so well in Pittsburgh!

And even though he was only with the Eagles for a single season, that may have been long enough to wash off any residual stink from his time in Pittsburgh, as Pickett explained this week when asked about how his time in Philadelphia impacted him (quote via a team-provided transcript?

“Yeah, I’m extremely grateful for my time in Philly. I think I was just shown how it’s supposed to be done, really, from the top down. So when you get a chance to see what it’s supposed to look like and how it should look on a day-to-day basis, not just  on Sundays. You know, I think it’ll pay dividends for me in the future.”

  • seriously, wtf is up with that hair

Pittsburgh is currently waiting on Aaron Rodgers to decide if he wants replace the old man version of Russell Wilson that lost his last 5 consecutive starts for Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, the Browns drafted 2 QBs and brought back Joe Flacco (who is pretty close to being Aaron Rodgers' age).  Let's take a look below at how he did for the Colts last year... It looks like he missed Stefanski but he wasn't that too bad (looks like he didn't throw 1 pass vrs Houston he's not getting that loss so they went 3-4).  The worst thing I see is the amount of sacks he took. Without seeing any of those games - it's tough to give him a fair assessment.  It'll be interesting to see if this offense is a better fit for Pickett than what Pitt came up with for all the QBs they've brought in and raced out of town (Trubisky, Pickett, Wilson, Fields) as incompatible system fits.  If so, we'll see a nice battle between the 2 experienced QBs while we hope there's also a great competition between the rookies.  I'm not rooting against any of them - so it'll be fun to see who earns their place on the final depth chart heading into the opener.  My only question is - did the Browns already decide on their veteran when they opted not to pick up the final year (2026) of Pickett's rookie contract?  Definite maybe here...

Somewhere after the 7 minute mark they also talk about Schwesinger and Breer said something along the lines of:

"I talked to an executive on another team a few days before the draft, and he said that he wasn't sure if Schwesinger was going to be a first round pick, but that he made so many plays that it was actually difficult to scout other UCLA defensive players."

Even if just a coincidence - UCLA has been a pretty good place for the Browns to draft defensive players.  Don Rogers and Eric Turner became fan faves almost instantly.

Probably coincidence. I don't think there is some secret mojo going on between the Browns and UCLA defenders.  Actually, very few players have been selected from UCLA minus recent flops named DTR, Felton, and Payton.  All offensive players.

Yeah probably.  I agree they don't usually have a lot of defensive players in the draft but when they do - it's easy to remember guys like Kenny Easley, Carnell Lake, Eric Turner, Don Rogers, Ken Norton.

We were talking Browns players. If we are shifting the goalposts, I agree that Easley and Lake were good players.  Norton, he made a pro bowl or two as I remember, but not one I would consider really good.

Easly is in the HOF I believe,  Lake i am not sure but know he was a pro bowl player on 3-4 occasions.

Really?  ?Shifting goalposts?  No, that's your skill in this one. This is what I wrote (pasted below) pertaining to defense only and it didn't say frequently.  Not to worry, it only began with "Even if just a coincidence."  You responded with  "Actually, very few players have been selected from UCLA minus recent flops named DTR, Felton, and Payton.  All offensive players."

There's your goalpost moving by you from the onset. You did that knowing 2 of the guys you mentioned were drafted in the 5th round (DTR and Jordan Payton) and 1 in the 6th (Demetric Felton).  Let's not pretend we drafted DTR with expectations of Troy Aikman in return - or- Demetric Felton with expectations of Maurice Jones-Drew in return.  They did what a lot of guys drafted in those rounds tend to do - make the team for 2-3 years or so and fade. Doesn't make them flops. Don't worry I'll get us back to the defense so we can stay on topic.

My bringing up other UCLA defensive players was really more to illustrate that over time there really haven't been a lot of huge impact defensive guys from that program around the league overall when I could only think of/name 5 guys (but 2 of them were Browns in this league that has 31 other teams). Hopefully Schwesinger becomes the next since he was the reason I somehow got here with you.  Yes, Carnell Lake was a 208 lb LBer at UCLA that the Steelers found a niche for at Safety.  He made 5 Pro Bowls while being named 1st Team All Pro twice and 2nd Team All Pro 3 times.  Ken Norton Jr started at LBer in 2 Super Bowls for the Cowboys and 1 Super Bowl for the 49ers. In matching his volume of 3 SB starts for Conference Champions - he also made 3 Pro Bowls even if you need to think of him as not very good.  However you were correct Kenny Easley is in the NFL Hall of Fame.

Ironically and sadly Rodgers and Turner both passed away.. Let's pray for a better outcome and return on this particular investment so to speak...

Well said! I think Turner got sick when he played for the Raiders but that might need some fact checking as to what & when though Nicks.  Yeah, we only had Rogers for 2 seasons.  Who woulda thought a bachelor/stag party would be what stopped his life?

Never mind the fact checking - here's what I found.

? Sometimes it feels like just yesterday where Shep would tell us how many times Colt McCoy's rookie mini-camp passes hit the ground.  Over a decade later, we're reading stuff like Dillon Gabriel doesn't look like an NFL QB (our FO's 1st choice of QB in this draft).

You're right.  Things change significantly when defenders are allowed to sack/tackle passers.  Not for nothing, this team has had a lot of trouble keeping their starting tackles healthy enough to avoid IR the last 2-3 years.  There's variables that will impact the success of the passing game that aren't in play before training camp.  We'll see what happens...

We have 5 QB's.  Any NFL exec would say, That means you have none.  And that's true for us because we don't know who will open the season as the starter.  Except that we know Watson won't.

4 QB's  -  Who will be the starter?

Dionte Johnson was asked that after mini-camp and he said, They'll probably roll with Pickett for now'.

According to former NFL player T.J. Houshmandzadeh, a source from within the organization let him know that it’s coming down to the wire between Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel  (he also said that the source is not a player)

I'm typing this on June 26th so, T.J.'s source saying 'coming down to the wire' is kind of strange.  I doubt Stef will have a QB depth chart set up based on one mini-camp.

I personally think that it's Pickett's job to lose.  He's the first QB they brought in, they traded assets to get him, he's young and was a 1st round pick.

Gabriel cost them 3rd round assets.  Sanders 5th & 6th round assets.  The only one that didn't cost them any assets is Flacco, the best pure passer of the bunch...but the waaay oldest.
