You can do 101 plus with a '99 VFR 800 Honda though.?

My 1st inherited car was a Dodge Dart.  I'll never forget the day I backed out of my driveway on Main Street in Fairport NY. This was on a hill that had a sign blind drive.  How ironic!   Anyway, immediately after I perfected my maneuver in reverse - my vehicle refused to move forward when I put it in drive.  Unfortunately this was on a very busy road.  Soooo, I ended up putting it in neutral while the buddy I was supposed to be driving home and my step dad assisted me with traffic while I went backward down the hill only about 100 yards or so until I turned into the first street available and went down another hill into the School of Religion parking lot.   In spite of all the fun I had in that car - that thing had 1 malfunction after another. That thing had more injuries than our offensive tackles have had in recent years.

Like you Aggies, I only bought Hondas or Nissans after that.  All I had to do to stay out of Repair Shops was change the oil as recommended.  The idea of buying American was appealing; but the reality of doing so was unaffordable.

And today I have a Honda Civic Hybrid with a 200 hp dual electric engine and my wife has a Subaru Crosstrek, both of which have extremely high reliability. BTW That VFR 800 is a motorcycle. Gave it up as I approached 70 years old. I still miss it because I rode them all my life starting age 16 on my brothers 2 speed Moped.?

I just got out of my Mercedes E350 4MATIC.  Beautiful car, excellent ride, quite, smooth.  ALWAYS breaking down.  Expensive repairs.  One week ago today, practically to the minute, I drove home with my new Mazda CX-5.  All leather seating, Heads Up Display, heated and ventilated power front seats.  Heated rear seats.  Heated steering wheel, Nav., Bose speakers all over the place, adaptive headlights  (GREAT for turning in my dark neighborhood), 360 cameras, adaptive radar cruise control, yaadda, yadda.  Right now I'm in the middle of giving it the full Zaino Show Car Polish treatment.  (same stuff I use on the vette)  The Mazda has a 187 hp motor and it has Normal - Sport - Offroad modes.  OKAY?!  187 hp Sport Mode  LOL

I traded in my 10 year old Mercedes Turbo 4 CLA 250 for the Honda Hybrid last fall. Never had a problem with it, but my trusted mechanic had told me if it made it 10 years with less than 100,000, get rid of it before it became a costly money eater. I had 88,000 on it and got $15,000 plus on the trade in. I was happy. I told them they could truthfully say on resale it was owned by a doddering 77 year old man. ? Never told them how much I loved to floor that turbo.?

BABOOMBA!  Sounds like you always have NICE rides.  Why not though?  You worked hard.  My wife's brother (great guy) used to work at GM and he got my wife what sounded like a great deal on the family plan when she purchased a Pontiac Grand Am.  Great looking car.  My best friend who drove nothing but Pontiacs gave her a huge bear hug and said maybe we can finally get your husband up to speed.  Don't you know in the 31 years we've been married that car had more problems than the Dodge Dart I was complaining about.

I had 51K miles.  3 coil packs went on it (1 at a time).  Water pump went.  Engine seal oil leak.  This February I'm on my way home and hear a clunking when going over bumps so I swing by my mechanic's shop.  He knew right away.  Rear sub-frame rotted away.  He told me to have it flat bedded to the dealership.  He's said that he's sent about 20 cars there.  Mercedes started covering the issue in 2023, days before the class action suite was to occur.  They had my car for 4 days.

It certainly does doesn't it.  But that's only recently.  This is only my 2nd ever new car.  (the first was the 2000 vette)  Most of my life was spent with used cars in varying degrees of 'used-up-ness'.  🙂  Though I always preferred to have a Camaro if I could.

Damn! I sure was lucky with mine. It was built in the Chech Republic. And thank goodness my trusty mechanic told me to get a Honda, Toyota or Subaru. She loves hers and I certainly love mine. I never even put it in Sport mode or even normal. It has plenty of horses in Econ mode. Makes those Prius things look like sloths. ?

Still have the first car I bought stateside '97 Civic Lx manual. It always invites questions parked next to a M3 and X5 at home. Still drives well, can easily hit 80 mph and taught all my kids to drive stick on it (even my daughter). They'd kick and scream about learning stick but now thank me for it as none of their friends can borrow their cars lol.

Got my license with my parents' automatic.  My 1st car, a '64 LeMans, manual, 3 on the floor, non syncromesh.  I realized that my license was worth crap because now I didn't know how to drive.  🙂  I got it registered, put the plates on it and my friend came over and said, Well, take me for a ride!  I said I didn't know how to drive it.  He said, I'll explain it to you as you drive.  And off, off, off we went  🙂    -  Did I mention that non syncromesh means that if you're just about at a red light, and it turns green on you, you cannot just shift down into first and continue on?  Well, you can't.  You have to come to a stop before you can put it into 1st gear...and since it's only a 3 speed, 2nd gear is awfully tall.  Therefore, after a few times of somebody beeping their horn at me because I'm stopping at a green light I learned how to feather that clutch and throttle such that I could get out-a-there in 2nd gear.  🙂

When I got my D.L. in Venezuela the Mobil employee took me down there with a stick shift car and I had only ever driven automatic in the U.S. The test guy insisted in me driving us about 3 blocks to a local bar. I did this with the Mobil guy sitting next to me on the bench seat doing the shifting with the clutch and stick on the steering column and me working the accelerator and brake pedal. We had 3 beers for about .75 Bolivars which the Mobil guy paid for with a 20 Bolivar note. When change was brought back the testing guy picked up the change and issued my license as soon as we got back to the testing site. Now there's stick shift story for ya. LOLOLOLOL!?

Good idea. I had that same learning curve thrown at me as a kid, had to learn to drive a stick. Ever heard of an Isuzu Pup? It was a smaller pickup, manual shift and no power steering. That’s what l learned to drive on.

I made a rule that every other car l had would be a stick shift and l’ve stuck with that in to my late 40s. My last car was manual shift ‘05 Civic and it was hands down the best car l’ve ever had. 250k trouble free miles that thing gave me. Other than scheduled maintenance the only thing that ever broke on it was the cable that opens the gas hole lid.

I wanted a hybrid after the Civic finally wore out so l went with an Accord Hybrid. Apparently there’s no such thing as a manual shift hybrid so l gotta wait a few years for my next stick shift.

I got a thing for old AMCs and would love to land a Rambler, ideally ‘65 with three on the tree.

Interesting, l wasn’t aware of what synchromesh meant. Most of my stick shift experience was on 4 or 5 speeds and l was taught to never downshift in to 1st. It’s easy enough to get going in 2nd on those if you soup it up enough on flat ground.

My only experience driving a 3 speed manual was a buddy’s ‘69 Superbee. That’s a fun car. Not many left as their horsepower to braking ratio sucked and a lot of them wound up wrapped around trees or worse.

Yeah, in the written exam I would come across a word I didn't know and ask for help. Instead of explaining the word he'd point to the correct answer out of 4 choices. I "passed" that too before we took the ride.

  • Well Shedeur most people are excited to see what you are about with your first full week of practice with the one's and a game plan for your skill set, and if anyone watched the bills game last night houston had Allen running for his life, so it happens, so as i said most people would like to see you succeed except for people like nickers who hates black qb's and would rather watch you fail so he can pat his other klan buddies on the back, and shout put the white guy in

I got my license in hs, with a Ford Falcon with 99 thousand miles on it, that my parents gave me. lol.

Used to go up a steep hill to get to the movies, and the engine was so worn, it had to be in first gear to get up the hill. That was their funny way of keeping me from getting speeding tickets as a new driver. The upside, was that I was chugging up that steep hill, in first gear, and I'd tell my date that they had to lean forward towards the dash or it would stall out. They would laugh, and I would flutter the accelator a bit, and I'd say "too late, ...crap", and they would lean forward, would stop fluttering,... and it was way too much fun. They would laugh. I got called an idiot a few times. lol

Still in hs, I bought my own '66 Chevy Belaire, 3 on the column. 250 engine, 155 hp, I think it was, 4 door. Great dating car. We drove it to central Ontario on our own graduation vacation - camped way out in the wilderness for two weeks, with our 17' Grumman canoe, down a 6 mile jeep trail, camping on the on the other side of a remote lake. Loved that car. But the frame rusted out, no place to bolt on shocks anymore, so.... I wish I had kept that engine though.

Cars were usually dead at that mileage back then.  Was the Falcon the smaller one or the station wagon?  My parents bought a new Falcon wagon in 1961.  Engine was too small for the car and had to be replaced within a few years.

it was the small one. It was called "big smith hill" back then. Just pretty funny. I tried not to laugh when they caught on, but there was no use. Especially at the top, when I put it back into drive. lol
