Browns getting some Pre Season National Love

It's the timing sometimes that makes one scratch their heads...

I'm not talking about last season, that abortion of a season was Ken Dorsey's offense, but the four seasons before I would bet that Stefanski ran the ball percentage wise as much or more than just about any team in the NFL. People would complain that Chubb didn't get enough carries, yet he was always at the top of rushers in carries.

But there are moments where it really didn't feel that way. Stefanski definitely can get too cute at times.

People, regardless of the enterprise, organization or event, tend to overwhelmingly focus on that *one* thing out of 10.

The Browns under stefanski have been 3rd, 4th, 6th, 12th then finally 29th in rushing last season when the wheels finally came off.

Fans are fans, and they're passionate. But the overwhelmingly majority are idiots too, being too emotional in their critique of how they see the game.  Hense the complaint about Chubb not getting 30 carries every game.

It's probably coincidence but it's like this comment literally summoned nickers and Calfox. ?

Does not matter - Stup is still a head coach with far less coaching instincts it seems to me, compared to other coaches. He just seems to be stoically bewildered on the sidelines all the time.

and, of course, Stupidski will be calling the plays. That's a sad thing. Maybe Rees is a brilliant young guy who can change the offense enough to be effective and make stupidski not a dragdown on effectiveness of the offense.

I think fans forget that Stefanski actually wins games vs the Ratbirds, Steelers, & BenGals.

Do I think he's fantastic? No. But he is the best coach they've had since the restart. He's learned to not gamble on 4th down so much, for example.

I do think there's crap behind the scenes that he puts up with, so I suppose he is a "yes man," which is the biggest negative.

Yes, by a hefty margin.  And he & the GM get along well with one another.  We should want these two to succeed.  They're not embarrassments like we've had.

And with the FO being aligned with DePodesta, the analytics playbook has to be deferred to.  Like, screw the FG - Go for it on 4th down.  Not into 4 yard runs - want 13 yard passes.  And then there's Jimmuh & Dee...   It ain't easy being a Browns coach.

That may be, but it it like saying smelling a half a cow turd is better than smelling a whole cow turd in a pasture. Stupanski is bailed out by the terrific defense and coordinator.

Any time he is interviewed, he's boring. At least Rees has a chance to influence some ways the offense "works" under Stupanski.

Thank you for that cow analogy Calf.

I like Stefanski. Easily my favorite HC since the return. He is a little dull in interviews, very matter-of-fact, but he knows his stuff and more often than not he puts a competent team on the field.

The guy’s been put through the gauntlet with the Watson debacle. He was saddled with a #1 QB who has been unavailable more often than not, which means he had to rely on multiple QBs to cobble out wins the last few years.

I really don't care about interviews Cal. BB gave the worst interviews, he did pretty well.

Like I said, they finally have a coach who can game plan for divisional opponents.

I think it would be foolish to can him. If anybody deserves to be canned, it's DePodesta ( two tank jobs).

    Go Browns

    For anyone following along.

Stefanski has won more playoff games carrying a piss poor IDL and Joe Woods, nearly getting to the AFC title game - than he has with Coach Schwartz.

big deal - Baker Mayfield was the qb of one of those playoff wins - the Steelers big win.  The Browns had the talent to win the Division, but no. Haven't won games they need to win.

It hasn't been the defense, that is the point. It has been the offense.

Stefanski's playcalling - he doesn't get how to fool defenses. He doesn't seem to have the instincts for it.

After Baker and co beat the Steelers, they lost to the Chiefs, 22-17. The Browns had the talent on both sides of the ball, the defense rocked, but....the difference was Stefanski and his playcalling. His playcalling has been called out by many.

Sep 23, 2024The Cleveland Browns' 21-15 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday has reignited concerns over head coach Kevin Stefanski's rigid play-calling, raising questions about his ability to adapt mid-game and what it could mean for the team's future success.

The difference in the KC game was the inability of the defense to stop Chad Hennie, and a blown call by the refs.

The Houston playoff game, well the defense didn't ever get on the plane. Horrible game.

I hate flashing back, but it seems that as a Browns fan, it's what we do.

Can we please move on from Baker? I liked him, but he grew up after he left here. Good for him.

Let's focus on 2025. Will the offensive line be above average? Will the QB(s) gel with the receivers? Will the defense be better?

Not so fast - Nick Chubb was only 13 carries, for 69 yards. Stefanski wanted to run to set up the pass. That is the difference in the whole game. And I didn't bring up the playoffs games, that is in the past, too.

In 2024, the Browns got blasted by Houston - 45-14. Kareem Hunt was 8 for 26. Jerome Ford was 9 for 17 yards. Two INTS, sacked for 39 yards. 0 for 4 fourth down conversions. I don't blame Flacco - he was 34 completions in 46 attempts.

The blame goes to Stefanski. They held onto the ball so pitifully they only scored 14 points? That game, the defense was also a disaster.

Again, Stefanski openly wants to run to set up the pass. Poor rushing, again.

    It's Stefanski.

Teams seem to be keying on his playcalling, and his serious lack of pre-snap motion. I mean, going on fourth down four times and failing every time?

He doesn't do adjustments during a game well. I say he just doesn't have the instincts for smart football.

This. His play calling assumes perfect execution, he doesn't seem to account for his personnel limitations. That's why it's frustrating to see him not make adjustments based upon situational football. Like 3rd and short with game on the balance with PJ Walker, despite a good play call, he doesn't consider that the guys is not a

The offensive line has a chance to be dominant - depends on Dawand staying healthy at LT. and, of course, it depends on stefanski somehow learning how to call plays to fool defenses, which is doubtful.

The defensive line will surely be dominant - going to be awesome to watch. The addition of Graham makes them dynamic - puts Garrett in excellent position to avoid double teams. Graham can terrorize in the pass and hte run game.Linebackers, not sure, but they may very well surprise us all. The secondary - major weak link is emerson, imgo, ... it should be interesting.

Fair enough, let's cherry pick this. No need to compare Stefanski to Reid, Tomlin, or Pete Carroll, as one could argue they're elite (well, Carroll screwed up a Super Bowl).

Stefanski took a team to the playoffs using 5 QBs, that's impressive. I doubt anyone else on this list could do that.

    • Most fans in Buffalo want McDermott gone, while forgetting that before he arrived, they had a 17 year playoff drought.
    • Kyle Shanahan gets a lot of love, yet the 49ers are only good every other year, and he got pass-happy with a 28-3 Super Bowl lead. I wish he didn't get run out of town by Ray Farmer, bad move by Cle.
    • Jim Harbaugh-kind of an enigma but he does motivate his teams. The scUM cheating scandal is something that he will never shake.
    • Vrabel- let's see what he does in New England. His time in Tennessee was pretty good, even though his QBs weren't so hot and they gave away AJ Brown.
    • Taylor in Cincy, I'd argue he's done way less than Stefanski with a lot more firepower. Burrow bails him out.
    • Bowles- not as bad as his record looks. His time with the Jets skews his record.
    • LaFleur- solid coach, although the Pack gets a lot of "help" like the current KC Chiefs.
    • Sirianni, Payton, & Campbell are solid. McVay, elite IMHO. Dan Quinn, well I don't know, he's ok.

As you can see, I'm fine with Stefanski.

The Browns have had TWO 11-5 seasons and one of those was Stefanski's ROOKIE year as HC.  At the end of the season, they won a playoff game AT PITTSBURGH (although Haters needing to hate will caution you Stefanski missed that game with COVID).

I agree Stefanski is far from perfect given Jimmy's world that demands a lot of overcoming by any and all scapegoats that signed up for such accountability.  Truth of the matter is - the Browns have consistently done far worse than Stefanski at HC.  In a perfect world - you only fire a HC if you're capable of upgrading him with whom you hire to replace him.  Outside of 1 FO guy convincing him to hire Stefanski - has Jimmy been good at hiring upgrades after exercising his trigger finger?  Not really man!

    Bingo.

Unless Haslam changes his chain-of-command structure, it's highly unlikely he'd ever woo in a "big name" coach.

Also, a word of caution- the last "big name" the Browns hired was Mike Holmgren and we know how that worked out. I know it wasn't a Haslam hire, but still...and me being petty, I truly hope that the NFL HOF keeps Holmgren out after his debacle here, it's reason enough IMHO.

you still mad that you proved yourself to be a fake arrogant NFL expert, laddie? Not my fault you called Mayfield garbage and he's a huge star down in Tampa Bay, making you embarrassed , while demanding no one talk about him anymore. lol

Former NFL safety and ESPN analyst Ryan Clark has declared Baker Mayfield as "a top 10 quarterback." Clark offered this strong endorsement while highlighting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' potential heading into the 2025 season.
