CLE v PHI. Preseason Week 2

The Browns Board
42 15 701 1
  • yep, I thought Gabriel did a real nice job, some really great throws, a lot of zip and really accurate - the placement was perfect. The int - the defender was hiding between the two on the diagonal throw... (yes, not supposed to be at the same place), and jumped on it. I don't fault Gabriel much - didn't see the defender.

The rb's looked pretty tough, ran hard.  The defense - the run defense is going to be excellent, I think. But it's preseason.

I'm fine with Huntley and twatson not making the final roster. That leaves Flacco, Pickett, Sanders and Gabriel.

Gabriel took a sack, but the blocking was horrendous on that side.

The Eagles were a lot tougher test - look at what they did last season. The Panthers were no match.

But it's preseason, whatever. Can't wait to watch the defense, with Graham and Garrett playing.

Nah, all my Aggie friends buying into the yearly August hype that we'll be in the playoffs is actually a hope killing cancer by the end of Sept when they're already out.

  • I had to work today and missed all but Gabriel's last drive. Looked like he could've gotten a lot of (or even just a little) help from the tight end on the pick 6. I didn't really think Gabriel was an NFL talent, but he did look decent climbing the pocket.

Ball placement/accuracy was impressive.  He threw a 10 yard out across the field just past a defender and over a tall defensive end.  The kind of throw that scouts said he could struggle with.  I didn’t see any throws downfield but I was impressed by Gabriel taking what the defense gave him and being quick and decisive.  It was a very good start

He's got a lot of years of college level experience...perhaps that didn't hurt him any.

Yes!!! And also this day and age of transfer portal it doesn’t hurt learning three different offensive systems in five years.

That's a huge plus for him.  The irony of this whole thing pre-draft was I posted a list of least talked about faves I had and he was one of the only QB prospects I listed (despite the reality I don't often want step-stool QBs).  The only great QB under 6' that I can recall in recent years is Russell Wilson.  Then there's the 6' guys like Joe Theismann, Drew Brees and Billy Kilmer that were too few and far between. Theismann's Pro Football career started in the CFL for Toronto. Drew Brees did so bad in his 1st 3 years that SD drafted a QB with their 1st pick overall heading into Brees' 4th season.  Lucky for him, Philip Rivers held out for the length of training camp and Brees made his 1st of many Pro Bowls to follow.  I'll bet a lot of the early struggles had to do with adjusting to seeing the field.  Coincidentally, it's no secret the Chargers also drafted a Center that snapped in the shotgun at Purdue (Nick Hardwick) a high percentage of the time.  Same college Brees attended.  When you put a QB in the shot-gun, 1 of the advantages you give him pre-snap is better peripheral vision.  As small as something like this may seem, it can really help a QB that knows every primary route his guys on the perimeter have.  Seeing what leverages the DBs have pre-snap can assist him with prompt throws to receivers that have to adjust their routes. All that didn't happen overnight even for a guy with his football IQ.

There's so much to learn for young QBs today so getting to start for 3 different college football teams has me thinking that will expedite his learning.  I'm glad he played well yesterday.  Unfortunately, I didn't have a lot of time to read how he did in the scrimmages with Philly during the week. I want BOTH of rookies to play well enough to make it a tough decision on what 1 they would need if Flacco got hurt.  Even though 1 guy got drafted 1st, JMO - a HUGE part of that was because they were snubbing Deion like every other team that needed to draft a rookie QB was doing (because of previous comments of teams he didn't want his son playing for sabotaging the crap out of when Shedeur got drafted).  All dust in the wind now - Gabriel and Sanders are here competing with 1st performances reflecting their determination to succeed...

You guys think Larvadain makes the final 53?

You bet. And I see a lot of time on the field besides STs.

It sounds like he's had a good TC.  It could come down to him or Kaden Davis.  I'd be fine with either because they can both play STs,

That might be a smart bet Aggies!

Would it suck if one of these guys became what Josh Cribbs was here or Steve Tasker was in Buffalo Or Julian Edleman was in NE?  Yeah, one showed to his team as a WR while the other 2 showed up as QBs that rushed for a lot of yardage in college.  Point is - this is an ideal opportunity to everyone you can be a game changer.  Tasker didn't just block punts/place kicks - he was also the guy that would lined up outside on punt coverage with 1 or 2 guys trying to press him at the LOS.  He was an animal despite his frame.  They didn't even care if he ever panned out at WR mainly because they already had Andre Reed, James Lofton, Don Beebe (rumored to run in the 4.3s at Chadron State). Point is - Tasker was a 9th round pick out of Northwestern that was 5'9" tall weighing 180 lbs.  He wasn't supposed to be significant; but his passion earned him 7 Pro Bowls. When we're looking at guys competing for one of the last WR, RB or DB spots - you never know what they can contribute overall here.  This will be interesting...

If we keep 4 QB's then there's only 49 spots left.

  • The ESPN Show with Unsportsmanlike with former NFL player Chris Canty has Canty making a big deal about Dillon Gabriel's comment about being a competitor instead of an entertainer.  Canty is making it out to be a dig at Shedeur when Gabriel clarified in the post game interview it wasn't about Sanders at all.  Media wouldn't try to do such a thing would they?  ?

  • - On the stat sheet, Gabriel had an ok day.  The INT was bad, youre rhe QB and the buck stops with you. Cant throw into muddled traffic.  But my biggest issue isn't the throws he made, it was the throws he didn't make.  More on that later, for those who follow my work on twitter.

     - Kamara is making this final roster.

    - Been saying this since last season, Cam Mitchell isn't a corner.  He isn't a nickel corner and he sure as fuck isn't playing outside. He just doesn't have the lateral burst and hip fluidity.    They need to give him more looks at safety otherwise it's a disservice to your evaluation.

    - I have some worries about how this defense will be plagued by higher percentage RPOs on early downs.   The aggressive downhill fits from our 2nd level really expose us to more patient and methodical play off of ball action.    Think similar to how the Chiefs moved the ball on Buffalo in the playoffs then struggled to do much of anything against Philly. Same same.

    - Jerome Ford should be cut in favor of Ahmani Marshall. I'm not kidding.  Eat the 1.1mil and get the more talented runner and blocker on the team.  Unless Ford has grown a new pair of eyes, I've seen two seasons of the same inconsistent play and leaving yards on the field.

    - Isiah Bond is becoming sort of an offensive need.  We need some wheels to get vertical at some point. I love having bigger targets like Njoku, Fannin, Ceddy and JJ, but speed kills and we need a little bit of that.  Thrash has some potential to contribute, but his first step quickness doesn't eat cushion like you'd hope and his lateral burst isn't there either.   This team is using more motion this pre-season with Thrash being the biggest beneficiary of that motion.   If the coaches want to maximize that short area potential, they'd start giving Bond some of those reps.

That's what I've got for now.
