I think you're selling short just how bad the current OL situation is.

Not just LT, all four bodies that have starting or seen snaps between LT and RT have rated between 7th worst, and THE worst, at their positions.   Conklin is performing average at best.  Most times, he's below average.

Center... Wypler is playing like one of the worst in the league.

60% of your offensive line isn't just average, they're quite literally the collection of the worst talent in the NFL at their position group(s)

The OL is a company, a unit, a singular entity comprised of 5 seprate parts combined into one machine.

Can anyone think of a single enterprise that runs well where 60% of the work force is dysfunctional?

For those who remember my  warnings about that 2022 defense.  The IDL fielded a trio of Taven Bryan, Jordan Elliot and Tommy Togaiai that featured 2 bottom 5 graded players and 1 bottom 10.

This is no different.  The OL has been under-addressed for 8 seasons now. And the lone 1st round pick in 2020, Jed Wills, is damn near out of the league.

No infusuon of young talent, while the rest of the OL got older and more injured.

There weren't that many pressures on Dillon in the last game go check every film review this week. Dillon panicked several times unnecessarily the most egregious being the safety, there was an easy play in a clean pocket if he'd gone through his progressions. Shedeur made that play easily in the preseason. The OL is serviceable with well designed plays and decent QB play, unfortunately we have neither. Kevin thinks his 2020 OL is still playing on Sundays and has failed to adjust his scheme to the present personnel.

Gabriel was pressured on something close to 40% his dropbacks.

This OL is not even close to "serviceable".  There is no "scheme" i am aware of which makes aged bad OL play across multiple guys serviceable.  When 3-4 guys regularly cannot win their 1:1 you got trouble

No, none of this is to prop up Gabriel.  There is plenty of issues with his play too.

I feel bad for the offensive line aside from the LT (whomever it is) and the RT when Jack ain’t nursing a hangnail.  That’s a talent issue.

I’ll say it until I scream if you can’t stretch the field your offense ain’t gonna work.  We are laughing stock here.  So with 8 man boxes and safeties poking their heads in the run game - because we can’t throw a pass over 10 yards.  I can see why guard to guard isn’t playing well.  It is a trickle down effect.  Now the tackle situation agree 100% bad feet no functional strength and lack of discipline will not work at this level.

The lack of addressing it in prior drafts - agree there too.

i believe Bitonio on one leg, Pocic and a Pro Bowler like Tretter could be better with better outside support, a better passer, better playcalling etc.

I think you, and so many fans, would be shocked at the amount of 2 high the Browns offense has faced, starting as far back as week 1. When the Oline is as bad as we see, DCs are employing a more patient strategy by inviting us to run more and not surrendering numbers on the backend.

Weeks 1 & 2, we were averaging 2.3 ypc on 1st down.  Since QJ has taken over, we've gone up to just under 3ypc.    But that's still 25% short of most offenses target goal of 1st down yardage. So we're not as efficient as we need to be running the ball against any defense with a pulse, facing both single and 2h coverages.

This was one of the bigger adjustments by the Pats after the first browns touchdown, and once we couldn't take advantage of a defense being overly aggressive, they beat us patiently.

I'll explain this more in detail with my upcoming video.

Glad to see you were on board with that 2022 Dline being trash though.  Took us a couple years, but we finally got you there buddy. ❤️

If I recall correctly, I didn’t make many excuses for Joe Woods and his incompetence.

We were watching a different game then.   Some pressures because of protection, others he created himself by being late in his delivery or starting his eyes in the wrong places.

I'm not absolving Dillion of his play, no in the least.  He has severe limitations and it's effecting this offense.   But, like you'll see in a post of mine directed at you shortly, Dillion isn't THE problem on this team.  There is a hierarchy of issues plaguing this offense that has lead to systemic failure.

    @mddawg said:

Shedeur made that play easily in the preseason.

No, no he did not.  And I can give you the side by side comparison of the play structures Stef handed to dillion then Shedeur.  Dillon executed better, hence why he got the nod to start.

    @mddawg said:

    The OL is serviceable

Again, no.  It's one of the very worst units in the NFL at 3 of the 5 positions.

    @mddawg said:

This means nothing.  It's like I said, people toss around the word "scheme".  They have little idea what it means, but they think using it has some higher value.  I can show you the adjustments, everything from the 12 to 13 personnel, the increase in motion use year over year, and the amount of high percentage concepts read out to in for shorter/rookie QB's to alleviate issues.

Dillon is failing to execute, and to quote EPMD, defense are "hip to the scheme" now.  So they're able to take away some of these higher percentage throws, that's when Dillon isn't late to them.

I know you didn't make excuses.  My point was - you acknowledge the lack of talent now and that it's difficult, if not impossible to overcome.

But you struggled to do the same then.  It's a cheeky comment, sarcastic, light hearted, but with a modicum of honesty.  Take it as such.

Do you read my posts? Im not cherry picking shit.   It's my own work, I'd encourage you to follow it when published, my guy.

    Sorry, I didn't see this.

Pocic has been banged up.  But when he is playing, he's still playing like a bottom 1/3 center right now.     60% of this offensive line is just flat out bad.

This FO has been pathetic at upgrading the OL.  Their plan at OT was 32 year old journeyman Cornelius Lucas + Never-healthy Jack Conklin + plus can't bend/oft-injured Dawand Jones.   If he wasn't th right man for the LT job at Ohio State why is he the alleged solution at LT for this FO?  They're already excited to hear he should be the same guy he was pre-injury.  So they think they want to invest in a Franchise QB soon with a plan like this?  When you invest in anything - you should have your plans to protect it ready to rock.  Make sense?

Any smart, promising young QB prospect out there is hoping/praying the Browns or the Jets don't know they even exist. Totally possible...

  • My feelings are unless it is a new GM and coach, we better not pick another QB next year.

Those 2 guys just picked two fucking QBs this last draft.  How many QB's are we going to let those numbskulls select before improving a few other areas on the O?

What concerns me is that, provided there is a new GM and HC, that "tossing darts" will be the mentality.   In order to rubber stamp their new position(s) they draft a QB in, what's looks like, a pretty underwhelming class.

To me that's similar to what the Vikings did with JJ McCarthy.  They had a need, and they drafted to address it.  But did they address is correctly and with the right choice?  I've believe 'no' since day 1 and it has been an incredibly rough start for McCarthy.

Asking Cleveland fans to be patient is like asking to be slapped.  But if patience, nuance and particularness aren't used by new leadership in selecting the *right* QB, then any new regime will just be adding to the million name jersey in due time.

What college QB do you think is worth it with our first pick?

I only watch so much college football, but l like Mendoza from IU. He’s kind of a petri dish pick though because he’s working in an environment with a plus Oline and a plus group of skillset guys. The Browns are not that environment.

I'm not tia, nor do I play him on TV, but IMO the only QB I'd feel somewhat comfortable taking with the Browns high first round pick would be Mendoza. (And I'm not 100% sold on that as of today either)

The only guys I could see being in consideration for a top 10 pick other than him are woefully inexperienced - Sellers, Simpson and Moore - and they are all projections at this point.

Taking one of those guys is something only a head coach/front office that is solidly in place with a great track record, i.e. what Kansas City did with Mahomes with Andy Reid as head coach. Mahomes sat his entire rookie season until the last game of the season.

The Browns taking one of those three guys with Berry and Stefanski clinging on to their jobs would be a recipe for disaster, IMO.

As of this moment? None.   QB's, especially 1st overalls, that live up to the billing are pretty uncommon.    I also have to admit that I haven't started by QB evals and likely won't until after the season ends.  The all-22 for CFB has become more available these last 6-7 years.  I have a couple hookups including one from an air-raid college in memphis.   So I, or anyone else for that matter, really can't give you the most accurate assessment and answer until that time.

But I have been watching a sleeper for next year that I expect to rise - Darian Mensah, from Duke.

Regardless of the coaching staff, unless there's a massive infusion of young talent on the OL and at WR, no QB is going to stand a chance.

I also don't like half-assing it.  Either we see a kid and you love his game as a QB, or you find somebody at another position group whose game you just love.   Too often, reaching for the 3rd or 4th QB's in a draft, especially high, don't produce the results you'd like.

So you have identified the Browns FO strategy to a T huh???

Yes...that's the inconvenient truth.  However, if you need a QB, then you need a QB.  That's a May Day, All Hands On Deck, situation.  Every draft you are comparing players against the best available QB.  Until you are settled at QB.

Will we draft one in April?  Well, I think that was the plan as of last April.  Trade away Travis Hunter for another 1st rounder next year...which will give us assets to get the QB that we want...meanwhile we draft that future QB's backup this year and have Pickett or Flacco play.  That was the plan.  And, of course Pickett got hurt, Flacco had to be the starter...he showed that even HE couldn't lift the offensive talent around him, so now, we're in QB evaluation mode.  Gabriel is auditioning now.

I don't think that anything we've seen so far would change them from seeing the plan through.  But there's half of a season left.

Trust and believe when I say, there's plenty more where this came from with Gabriel.

Damn I think we all know that team holes cannot be fixed all at once, but I'm truly having a hard time wrapping my head around these thoughts (and I've seen/heard many others say similar things).

It's supposed to be a professional organization. They're paid to try & win games. They charge plenty of $$ for fans to watch (home games).

Playing "for next year" while not even starting the current season is criminal.

So if what you wrote is true, the franchise should be taken away from Haslam (fat chance obviously). The only other answer would be that they grossly over rated the guys they brought in to play offensive line & WR, which falls on the FO. I suppose one could argue they couldn't spend money on better players due to cap restraints they created all by themselves. What a mess.

Whoa Bob!  They're trying to win these games...Stef, Schwartz, et all.  I'm quite sure of it.  And on Sunday everybody in the organization is wanting a win.   Remember back at the Winter Meetings...Haslam was telling the press that they swung and missed on the Watson trade and that Browns fans might need to be a little more patient because it's going to take a couple of years to fix the QB situation.  He pretty much told us that the QB was not in this draft but in the next.  (at least that was the thinking at the time,  now it's not so clear that this is the big QB draft class that it was thought to be)
