tia... I rarely post here anymore, a certain individual severely upsets my psyche.  But I will take the time to comment on this absolute debacle of a game. A total team failure in every dimension. Special teams, offense, and defense. How can you lose to a Jets team that is deliberately trying to tank? The Browns succeeded.

I'll respect your opinion on Dillon Gabriel- but here's mine. I've seen enough to say HE SUCKS!!!  Career backup potential and Colt McCoy revisited. If we're going to tank- by God, put Sanders in. I can't hardly believe he could do much worse. But keep on trotting DG out there Kev- and you're going to be looking for another job- MHO. My wife grew up in Toledo and the Lions are her 1B team, also mine now.  Watched the entire Detroit game and comparing Goff (or any of the other top shelf NFL quarterbacks) to Gabriel is laughable.  Or should I 1\2 give him a pass because our offensive line laid a big turd on the field?

Gabriel is creating many of those pressures on himself, the OLine is serviceable with decent (not great) QB play. 6 sacks to that Jets D line? Cmon.

I agree, they will trot Sanders out there mostly because I believe he was Haslam’s pick.

But the results will be the same.

  • Wait, Tommy Rees who has failed as a playcalling OC in college at multiple stops is also no good at playcalling when everything is more difficult? [Bad at ND, bad at Bama]

    Shocking!

One wonders about the quality of the interview and research processes to hire this yahoo.

Sort of a win, if you think about it.

Don't mistake my words as an affirmation of Gabriel. I don't even see him as a long term backup. He has been playing THAT bad.   I compare him, favorably, to another small lefty - Kellen Moore.

As a pure football player, someone in your locker room, a hard worker, great teammate and a football mind,  you'd be pressed to find someone better.

But Gabriel's physical limitations are what effects his ability to play QB and those cannot be overcome.

The issue is the belief that there are singular points of "blame" or failure. There are multiple points of inconsistency and bad play that have lead to systemic offensive failure.

    - The QB play is awful

    - The OL play isn't far behind it

    - The receivers can't get into rhythm and we lack a structural dominant target or pure vertical threat.

It's the unholy triumvirant of offense and, barring talent infusion or facing a historically bad defense, there is no fix for it.

You encouraged me to do this as much as anyone. If you haven't seen my work in video form already, I've started the project.  My first ever was regarding Gabriel and this very same issue (height) before the season even started.

Behind just the joke itself, there's something to be seen in this play that highlights the desperate need for a QB and elite WR, or some vertical threat.

    - Thrash pushing vertical on the left side of your screen and beating the DB.

    - Late rotation from the corner in zone replacement on the right side of your screen.

If you have a tall, aggressive QB who can see landmark throws vertically and towards the middle, this could have been a huge gain.

I remember that play.  By the time he decided to throw it to the crosser, it was too late and he had to throw it away behind him.  Teller was in the process of losing his man up the middle so the ball had to come out.

A QB with greater physical stature sits there and delivers downfield as Thrash gets even with the DB.   You're going to take some contact within the pocket at the NFL, it's that simple.

Smaller QBs miss these throws from lacking vision and bracing early for hits (lowering your eyes into the rush)

Rees ran into the same play calling limitations Stefanski has.                  How odd.

Right.  If you call a run, you need blocking...whether you're Stef of Rees.  If you call a pass, you need a minor miracle...whether you're Stef or Rees.

Very sad to statistically dominate the game, and lose.  This time the ST's lost the game for the Defense.  The D just cannot catch a break.

Yeah, 14 points off of STs returns is gonna get you beat.  Here's a link below of a video of all the sacks the Browns gave up yesterday.  Keep in mind the Jets traded away their best Corner and best DL in exchange for 2 1st round picks in 2026 (and they only had 1 win to their name) so this shouldn't have been nearly as problematic.  Aside from the pressure and sacks, there were also times Gabriel couldn't see downfield so he either scrambled or threw the ball away.  He did throw 2 TD passes; but the rest of our schedule is better than the Jets are at this point - so it's not going to get any easier.

If he struggles next week, it's time to put the relief pitcher in the game - although it's not like Shedeur has been getting any reps with the 1st team all season.  Fernando Mendoza had a great comeback win with an awesome TD pass in the last minute erasing a 4 point deficit.  I'll say this, he really felt the absence of WR Elijah Sarratt in that matchup; but he got it done anyway.

    Well done!  Perfect timing.

  • The jets completed 6 passes, how are you supposed to compete with that?

  • The Jets think they can out tank us for the #1 overall pick? Think again!

Many will look at the score and think we lost, but did we...

With our luck though, are there really any top picks or depth of talent in this draft that fits our needs?

    Stock pile for 2027? ?

Reality is team to team playbooks are not really that different.  Personnel groupings and what you can do off of them are pretty standard.

As Tia deftly noted there are multiple issues

    - QB limitations/issues.  If one looks at the film more times than not there is an open guy

    - OL limitations/issues.  As a unit they are the bottom of the league.  The Ts are near the bottom of the league.

    - WR group does not have a true #1 to build around.  Also it lacks anyone to truly threaten vertically

With that tri-fecta of issues on offense there is no magic "playbook" solution.

We need to bendova for mendoza. At this point, losing is our best option.

Then fire Berry before draft day.

I don't think so, Gabriel was wildly inaccurate on several throws when he wasn't even under pressure. There's no doubt Shedeur is a better passer than Gabriel, the argument for the latter was that he was so much more advanced in processing the game than Shedeur, yet he takes the sack before the half almost costing us the tying field goal.  Shedeur would've won the game yesterday, against elite competition may be a different story.

I definitely think Sanders has the higher ceiling, I just question if he’ll be ready when he plays and we all know what a bad situation generally is waiting for him

I may be prejudiced, but Mendoza has not played any real competition this year. The one decent defense on a 5 game losing streak forced him into a last second prayer of a pass for the win. I need to see how they hold up in the playoffs against the best in the nation before selecting any of the QBs as our #1 pick. Right now I'm not convinced on anybody.

That's what I'm afraid of, and we all know the QB hype inflates as the draft is about to start.

Then we resort to saying "anything is better than what we have" as we give away talent at a position of other needs to reach for that 'better' qb.

I thought DG woud've done better but I haven't seen anything that says to give him more chances even knowing the hole we have our QBs playing from right now. I'd rather see Sanders sooner than later.

Going back to preseason game 3, and all through training camp, Shedeur was the QB2 behind Flacco.

Then PSG3 hit and that all changed. When the live rush from another team was presented, Sanders processing speed, and his eyes, fell with it.

I don't see anyone else on the internet who has brought this up, but both Gabriel and Sanders were handed a dozen plays each of incredibly similar, or exact same passing structure relative to downs and distance.

Sanders dropped his eyes and/or bailed from NFL clean pockets on multiple occasions against the rush,  while Gabriel stood in and either completed or attempted the throws.

That was what won him the QB2, and eventually, the QB1 job for Gabriel. When the bullets went live, he was more decisive than Sanders was.

Has that changed with time and more practice reps? Possibly.   But there are two points I'm making here.

    - It's a big stretch, at best, to say Sanders would have won yesterday.

    - Gabriel wasn't just handed the QB2 and QB1 job on a whim. He did earn it.

That said, what plagued him in camp and pre-season is showing up in the worst ways in regular season.   I can see him getting 1, MAYBE two more games. Then Sanders starts after the road trip vs the Raiders.

That would give them a similar amount of starts,  7 v 6,  with Shedeur getting his 1st at home against a weak San Fran defense that could help boost his confidence early.     At that point, ride the season out and evaluate the difference in QB play.
