To Shedeur, or not to Shedeur? (draft)

  • It isn't disliking Sanders - it's how he has shown limitations/weaknesses that are concerning and longstanding, including in college. It's just who he is. And I see him as being a backup qb, not anywhere near a franchise qb. Some things can be developed, some things - are just always going to be a problem.

True enough, but take the case of Josh Allen. Huge difference between his rookie/second years and later on once a real excellent QB developing coach worked with him. And like Allen, Sanders already has that long distance arm required of an NFL QB. Allen was 49.9 and 49.4 QBR his first two years. He also had 10 TDs and 12 Ints his rookie year but better the second, but far more sacks. Sanders needs the same kind of opportunity with a really good QB developing coach. God knows he never had one at Colorado. And he has slowly come along in the few games this year despite almost no support from our fired HC. Allen had almost two full seasons to develop with 12 games as a rookie and 16 the next. I was watching a mock draft of the first 6 for 2026 and Mel Kiper is a firm believer that Cleveland already has a QB, but what he doesn't have is a decent team to support him starting with WR and then OL. Now I disagreed with him that Tate should be their 1st choice. He doesn't have WR #1 speed or separation IMO.

Pat Shurmur may not be a good NFL HC, but he's recognized as a solid QB coach.

Most had Sanders as a top 10 pick as well, but teams did not like the trash his daddy was spewing out there pre-draft.

What did he say about Allen? That's more to the point.

  • Oh, he just picked him #1 overall. ?

I don't know how this will turn out with Shedeur; but once again - it's a pretty weak draft class ahead.   FWIW, here's his college stats when he actually had talent to throw to.

YEAR   COLLEGE     GAMES  W-L   YARDS  YPA  CMP%  PASS TDs   INTs  RUSH TDs

    2021    JAX STATE   13           11-2    3231      7.8    65.9      30               8        3

    2022   JAX STATE   13           12-1    3758      7.7    70.5      40               6        6

    2023   COLORADO  11             4-7   3230      7.5    69.3      27               3        4

    2024  COLORADO   13            9-4   4134      8.7    74.0       37              10       4

And here's his inability to put out the Dumpster Fire in Cleveland carrying over from the 3-14 record the year before he arrived.  As for this past season - the Browns were 2-8 before he took over as starter with a 3-4 record per Google below. HOWEVER, I am aware our defense did all our scoring in the last game with a little help from Shedeur on the final drive and his stats were never great this past season. That said, the eye ball test had a lot of people happy when the change from Step Stool QB to Sanders was made. I'd just like to see a much better pass protection in front of him this year with an upgrade to WR before I join the doom and gloom getting more popular by the second.

The NFL has tolerated spousal abuse, accomplice to murder, and just about everything in-between.    If Shedeur was the product that "most" had him as, then he wouldn't have fallen as far. Some GM somewhere would have said "Yep, it's worth the headache for the talent".    Yet, that didn't happen until day 3.     So when you say "most", you mean the entertainment media, not those running franchises (they aren't infallible either though)

Keep in mind, I was an advocate for the Browns drafting Shedeur.  Up until 3 weeks before the draft when I finally got the all-22 and then my draft grade on him changed.

  • It is a different circus.  The circus is the Family persona.  The intimating father figure (this doesn’t seem to be nearly as bad now) but his dad had a Christmas list of teams.  This all pointed to could he play nice as a backup because he would inevitably be a backup his rookie season and perhaps beyond.

Add to it, Deion the HC was considered an HC with options beyond his gig at Colorado that was until this year.  Those options included bigger programs and maybe just maybe the NFL.  Not a major concern but one you consider as a GM and HC of a team that is drafting his son.

I didn’t think he was a first round QB but I don’t think he’s a fifth round QB either.

  • General manager Andrew Berry explained after the draft that it wasn't necessarily the plan to add two quarterbacks, but positional value and how the board played out made it worth adding Sanders after taking Gabriel:

"We live by our board. We felt like he was a good, solid prospect at the most important position. We felt like it got to a point where he was probably mispriced relative to the draft. Really, the acquisition cost was pretty light, and it's a guy that we think can outproduce his draft slot. Our expectation is for him to come in here and work and compete. Nothing's been promised. Nothing will be given."

  • things could be worse, I guess - we could have T.J. Stroud as our franchise qb......

4 ints by halftime vs the dirtbag patriots......and some of the stupidest throws that may ever be seen.

Now why would you say a thing like that?  I like Vrabel.  I like Bob Kraft.  I sat in his luxury box once.  He walked in and immediately started talking to 2 people....until he saw me 15 feet away wearing my brown v-neck sweater with the orange helmet on the left chest.  He left those two guys like he was shot from a cannon.  🙂  He was very nice to me.  Scot Galbraith caught a 1 yard TD from Mike Tomzack at the end of the game for the win.  🙂

Oh, I have never liked the Patriots, it isn't a bash on Vrabel. Just the air out of the football thing....Jones....and buttichek. who was mac jones' head coach. Just old stuff, not recent.

I guess you wouldn't have liked football back when Jack Lambert, Dick Butkis, etc. played.

One of my golf partners doesn't like Myles Garrett because of his hitting the Steeler QB over the head with his own helmet.  🙂  Doesn't matter how many times I tell him, But that's not how Myles really is.

Actually, I never saw Jack Lambert as a dirty player. He was just viciously intense. Watched him in college. Actually a few friends and I found some extra student tickets for him and his roommate for their families and friends in town - the request came from Gary Pinkel, a TE -  we met him personally when he came to pick up the tickets.

Pinkel never made it to the pros. He had a terrific coaching career, though. Don James was the HC and had a magic about him.

Did I despise Jack Lambert with the steelers ? nope. Just hated the team. LOL

I actually was walking through the door, to walk a gal home to her apt one night, and the door of the old Robin Hood Inn opened before I got it, there was Jack Lambert. Tall guy, skinnier than you would expect. He stepped out of the way politely and said "Hi" and never saw him again in person...

and Butkus - the rules were different back then. He was like Jack Lambert - very seriously and viciously intense playing the game. More violent. But not a dirty player.

Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus of the Chicago Bears was not considered a dirty player in his day, just among the meanest and nastiest. Butkus and similar players such as Green Bay's Ray ...

well, crap. I don't remember that one. Maybe I was ...no, I just looked it up, 1978 - I was already out of the AF.

Lambert says this in this article:

    https://www.latimes.com/archives/blogs/sports-now/story/2011-02-01/sports-legend-revealed-was-jack-lambert-ejected-from-a-game-for-hitting-a-quarterback-too-hard

"A great Steelers Tribute site repeated the same story, along with a quote from Lambert about his ejection: ‘Dreith said I hit Sipe too hard. I hit him as hard as I could. Brian has a chance to go out of bounds and he decides not to. He knows I’m going to hit him. And I do. History.’"

and what video there is, Lambert should have not hit Sipe. I really don't remember that one. Must have been something important that made me miss that game.

Let's just say that was the reason David Mays was starting at QB in the rematch I attended in Cleveland.  This was the game in 1976 when the actions of Turkey Jones reminded Lambert of the precedent he set with that cheap shot on Sipe "I saw what you did & I know who your QB is." ?  And Pittsburgh's QB Terry Bradshaw was actually in-bounds like the pictures show below. Moral of the story, honor thy golden rule or DON'T - but there WILL BE consequences.  I don't remember any further issues from Lambert after that; and I certainly don't remember any Steelers wanting any part of Turkey Jones.  In fact, I don't remember any further issues with QBs on either side until Myles Garrett and Mason Rudolph became BFFs well over 40 years later...  The Browns went 9-5 in that 1976 season under Forrest Gregg and didn't make the playoffs. That was a lot like when they were 10-6 during Joe Thomas' rookie season in 2007 and didn't make the playoffs.  I'd love to see other fanbases go through what we have especially when I hear how wonderful GB and Pittsburgh fans are way too much...  Before that game, I only saw Cleveland live when they visited Orchard Park.  After it?  My dad drove us to Cleveland for a game once or twice a year usually once.  However, he had an antenna on the house and a huge one on the top of our hill in the back yard that enabled us to watch the Browns almost weekly before satellite dishes came along.  We even got occasional feeds out of Ottawa Canada in French.

  • If Shedeur played in 2026, they put everything around him, and it didn’t work out, there is no excuse for anybody, whether you support him or not, to say, ‘I see why the Browns have to go in 2027 and get a quarterback,'” Bush said.

Since we're not in position to get 'the' QB...we should use the draft picks to build the OL & WR position...which a new (or current) QB would be absolutely requiring anyway.  To trade our picks away for the #1 pick THIS year leaves the new QB in a mess of an offense...again.

Can't believe I missed this quote from Bush you posted and your response to it.  Well said.  The ever elusive "next year" will have all the QBs that the Raiders, Jets and Browns scared back to college for 1 more year. Speaking of more with a different spelling - Dante Moore needs to go back and straighten out everything but his accuracy.  All doable basics that can be conquered by daily repetition in practice. For example, taking snaps cleanly without those hitting his hands then landing on the ground. Every play starts every practice should have the Center-QB tandem working at (no different than a WR spending extra time catching passes from on a jugs machine to sharpen hand-hand-eye coordination. For example volume II, integrate drills handing off and pitching or whatever you're going to use within the offense. For example volume III, watch film of your OL and your opponent's pass rush so you have an idea where you could/should be feeling pressure as well as how much time you may have.  This can be situationally practiced as well with whatever way they practice.  If he cleans up all those things - he can be as undisputed as Fernando Mendoza has made himself imo...

  • Build that OL and then see what kind of QB we already have as he learns to read and throw faster. He has the arm and he has they moxie. Just needs a bit more time.
