Who do we have to play the offensive line?
-
Stole this from one of the better minds on the platform & one of the few people whose defensive work I follow.
I mentioned this as far back as week 1, where this clip is from - the Browns OL & running game needs to be priority #1 as defenses try to emulate the Hawks - Split safeties & limit the running game. You have to be able to efficiently punish 2hi shells otherwise your playaction game is going no where.

I just spent about a half hour trying to understand what “cover 6/8” meant and this is the hot mess l got.
There’s 11 guys on defense. Help me out Tia.
Let’s say it’s cover 6. From front to back what is each of those players’ responsibilities in that play?

No shit Sherlock! ( please take that statement meant as 2 Browns fans buddies sitting at a bar having a beer & beer nuts ) Everybody knew we couldn't pass the ball. We ain't got no receivers ( or blockers, or a seasoned QB). All we had was Judkins and a couple of TE's. We HAD TO try and run the ball.
Off topic.....we are getting friggin' POUNDED by a blizzard here in southern New England. Where I am we may wind up with 30 inches. Fuck me!

While I didn't get anywhere near the apocalypse level of snow, I live just off the Lake. So the wind has been unreal. That's a dangerous condition you're in bubs, be safe & stock up on survival gear.

Best I can.
- Cover 6 & 8 are going to be match dependent based on pre-snap shift & routes post snap.
* When Fannin shifts to reset formation strength, creating a *true* ACE set (same amount of receivers either side and HB UC. Offset gun we call YO or YOYO) That's cover 6. The field corner has the field #1 matched in MEG beyond 5yards when he doesn't roll under. The field safety is eyeing Fannin as the #2 because he has to match him vertical unless he goes under as well. We designate a vertical release as anything beyond 8-10 yards. So if he goes under immediately, you're rolling over top flow side.
* When you see Fannin drag under, you see that same field safety rotate to create MOFC (middle of field closed) and shut down the post. Because he no longer has his tag to carry Fannin vertical in MEG as the #2. You may ask why he doesn't double the #1 in a traditional quarters sense? That's because it creates a huge void beyond just simple MOFO.
* The boundary safety in the cover 6 call pushes out over the numbers his side while the boundary corner (doesn't reroute the receiver) sits low and outside in cloud. That creates cover 2 to the boundary.
* Pair the MOFC transition from the field safety, essentially creating cover 3, w/ the boundary in cover 2 and you get what amounts to Cover 3 cloud. Split field coverage. Cover 3 one side, cover 2 to the other.
I have a lot of work to do and I'm trying to knock out Trinidad Chambliss, Ty Simpson, Pat Coogan (didn't forget) & Jayden Proctor all at once. I'll probably host a discord session this Friday. If you want, I can give you guys a walk through on the cover 6 & 8 meta that has now taken over the NFL. I'm pretty intimately familiar with these 2 high structures because we played a ton of cover 2, 4 & 6 when I was still cracking pads.
edit: Forgot cover 8. Seattle calls it 'Trix'. I'll try to make this shorter & easier
- Your cover 2 gets call to the formation strength. So if it's trips, you call cover 2 to trips and quarters backside to formation weakness.
- Biggest difference is that your backside quarters safety is going to roll and quasi "poach" that strongside #3 pushing vertical & over (provided there is no "fast" threat from his side #2) You can play a MOD to the boundary corner to cap the fade AND, depending on how routes develop, "buy back" the Trix safety to double a boundary #1. That's another big difference between 6 & 8.

OL Tackles in a nutshell .. https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2026-nfl-draft-strengths-weaknesses-top-offensive-tackles
Not a real headliner.. most come with better pass rush against scores. While having Lower scores in Rush Blocking.. I've seen reports of NFL ideal Tackle weights now are 305 to under 315lbs. (ideal 307)
It seemed like, This Browns OL, could not snap out of a stance to move anyone when needing a yard last season. They need to be clocking some 10 yard splits & some other drills to find some movers against others will ?..
A Higher percentage of browns running plays seemed to run at Wypler/Teller RG and any JAG we played at RT.. So Right or Left Tackle won't bother me.. Any Tackle/Guard that can move/plant someones a$$ downfield in any quarter would be a positive in this class
This is a wholesale problem in college football.
The current offenses are pass first. The days of braulers from the Big Ten on the OLine just lining up and beating the shit out of the guys across from them are long gone, and we see it now in the NFL. Physical run blocking is a lost art.

Yes and it has become a competitive advantage to embrace the physicality. In CFB you had two teams that could lineup and maul (Indiana and Miami) and they were standing at the end of it all.
NFL too Seachickens and the Pats same things

I should've taken the picture before clearing the driver's side. It was totally buried. Looked like a lump in the snow. (my new CX-5) You can just see the tips of my windshield wipers sticking out of the snow. All of a sudden, leaving one's windshield wipers up and off of the windshield so they don't freeze to it doesn't seem like such a good idea.
Radar looks like it'll keep snowing until around 7pm. (from 8pm yesterday)

I swear if I took over a high school team I'd just grab a 1962 Green Bay Packers playbook and run the Oklahoma drill in practice every day, and just dare the opposing teams to stop us.

Holy shitballs!
Last month we got hammered one weekend, where I live in NE Ohio got 9-10", my buddy in Clarion, PA got 23".
But you got ANNIHILATED.

WOW. I wish we could get that much snow, I want to use our snowblower more. lol
I suggest a Bluetti solar generator. We have a small one, a 55, it's light enough to take camping, but it is strong enough that we had an outage for a few days once, and used it to get our fridge and freezer running again to keep them cold. There are bigger ones, but the Bluetti has the lithium batteries that will last longer and work better.
We can still heat our home, with the wood-burning fireplace insert, which is enclosed and use the Bluetti to run the little fan that puts out that hot air. Plus, we could cook over the front 5" edge of the insert. Good luck with all that snow. That's amazing.

Yeah. At 1 pm at the Providence airport (TF Green, 9 miles away) they reported 32.8 inches. A new single storm record for the Providence area. (I'm 2 towns from Prov.)
I'm going back outside to peck away at making a path from our back porch door, around to the driveway. It's way too high for my (good sized) snow thrower. And then after that, to the shed and behind it where my dog likes to do his business. The friggin' drifts are chest high.
I Want A Dome!

I hope l never have to watch KT Leveston play football again.
It would be cool if Zinter flips the switch and earns the job. Wypler too.
Jones has had moments, but injuries.
Tevin Jenkins showed some promise, yeah?
I also do not want to watch Cornelius Lucas play football again.
I don’t know who the other guys are but l think Jeremiah Byers makes the team.

At least at tackle. I think he has some of the traits needed to be decent at guard.

but the rest of the line is up for grabs. Maybe they think Wypler is the center?
Good news--under rookie contract.. Bad news-- Week 17 knee injury
All we got left with, in a season ending win in a January at Natty was... Wypler suffered a traumatic knee injury in 4th qtr...He was replaced by Zak Zinter playing Center...
Let's just hope he's ready at OTA's .. ? (we'd take any good OL news! )
drafted by AB - and yes I understand the blind squirrel finally found a nut last year in the draft but OL shouldn't remain the mystery it continues to be here...
Starting back to when Bill Callahan walked into Berra from 2020 to 2023.. You'd think Berry could sponge something off his OL wit?
OL Drafted since 2020 Callahan era..
Jed Wills 1st round. Nick Harris 5th.
James Hudson 4th.
Dawson Deaton 7th.
Past Callahan exit..
Dawand Jones 4th Luke Wypler 7th
Zak Zinter 3rd
2025 0 drafted...
Berry see's OL like WR's .. Mid to late rounds, with a Wiff on Wills ? Who's scouting these Offensive Lineman? maybe fix that too?

Gumbs, Callahan didn't leave until 2024 when he joined his son's Staff for a couple years.
In 2023, Bill Callahan was the OL Coach here when Dawand Jones showed up as an extremely overweight and out of shape as a rookie attending his very 1st professional football training camp. Needless to say, news travelled that Callahan was NOT impressed - coincidentally Jones has 3 consecutive IR shortened seasons. Luke Wypler was also drafted in 2023 (190th overall in round 6).
Zak Zinter was post Callahan in 2024.

I’m not crazy about rebuilding this WR and OL group 100% through the draft.
Here’s how I’d handle the draft no clue about free agency.
i think #6 could be dangled to a team like the Cowboys. You move back and take your OT. With the additional pick acquired you take another lineman. I don’t want to see more than two rookie OLs on the field in September.
Id make a move for #1 WR so AJ Brown for the 24th pick. If the rumors are true. You get a proven #1 and take the guesswork away from Berry and he compliments the smurfs we have.
i think you have some value at 39 with another WR. Take one here.
And I ship 70 to a team for another lineman. You get a guy that is a proven commodity. And you take the guesswork out of Berrys hands
I havent touched free agency but we have two talented young lineman and younger established lineman.
You have Brown, Jeudy and a talented rookie in the WR room now.
I like your idea of trading for a vet OLineman.
But boy oh boy, I hate the idea of trading the #24 pick for AJ Brown. He's a headcase. If he didn't like playing for a Super Bowl winner, he'd hate playing here.

Agreed! He's a very tough guy to please. Is this really a good idea for a QB that is only 7 starts old?

@ibleedbrown Great video example of cover 8.
Cover 2 to the bunch (strength) side. Quarters backside. When the backside #2 doesn't push vertical, that backside quarters safety plays back to the bunch side (trix) building an integrity that resembles Cover 3 looking for any Over or vertical route to his hash.

The visual was helpful. I got that it’s a scheme used against bunch formations.

So, after week 1 of FA, who are our starters? Do we want Elgton Jenkins at C or G (G to go along with Zion Johnson)? Then there's Dawand Jones & Tytus Howard.

Elgton Jenkins -- C/G 6-5 310 30 8 Mississippi State
Jack Conley 67 G 6-7 333 24 1 Boston College Teven Jenkins 74 G 6-6 321 28 6 Oklahoma State

I'd want E. Jenkins to play guard if possible. It seems like he played at a higher level there than center.
There's a good chance IMO he plays center though, unless Wypler comes back from his injury better than expected or the Browns draft a center who is able to start sooner than normal.

Pick up A&M's Trey Zuhn III later rounds. Played mostly LT, but also a lot of time at C and sometimes LG. Very versatile.
