Jerome Harrison traded for Mike Bell (Jay Glazer reporting)

The Browns Board

  • I am beginning to wonder if Davis had inched ahead of Harrison on the depth chart and the team decided to make the move while Harrison still maintained some value..

  • I just love how everyone know's all there is to know about this guy and we havn't even seen him play one down in a Browns uniform yet. I think ill reserve my judgement for after Sundays game lol.

  • This is a great trade for the organization. I don't know what the argument is for - we took a person that we didn't want in a system, and he did not want to be in the system - and we were able to fill that with a back that will be able to benefit the system. This is huge, and maybe you have to know every aspect of the game to realize it - but it is. Our offensive line, when productive, is one of the most explosive and strongest in the NFL. When you put in a back like PH 2/3 downs, and then an entirely different back on other downs - the style as to which your offensive line plays changes completely. We now have essentially the same type of back running every down. The offensive line, now only has to worry about shrugging their man, pulling their man, every down - every play. Peyton Runs for two downs, 3rd and 2, he's banged up and tired - Harrison comes in, and the Offensive Line collapses because they are not used to making they holes and running to the side in order to get the plays available to make him successful. Now we have an additional guy in here that can push it through the middle, and bounce of tacklers to get that extra yard. Oh yeah, he also falls forward too.

I'm impressed by this trade, better than the 6th round pick we were going to get from the Packers two weeks ago (yeah, this is true).

He was virtually a Packer two weeks ago. The Walrus knew we could get more.

  • I was just on Cleveland.com which I know I shouldn't read because the level of morons there is massive. News check. Eric doesn't make trades now..Mike and Tom do. You can't give Mike and Heckert props for DelHomme,Hillis and Wallace but get on Mangini for the Harrison trade..Really moronic. Harrison was a dog this year and that was obvious and CLEARLY not better then Hillis and Holmgren and Heckert aren't blind.

This, like the Hillis trade, will be one we're looking back on sometime in the future thinking about how we made out on the deal. You can't for a second think Denver is happy losing a pick and Hillis for a third string QB lol.....

You mean an "inactive on Sundays" QB?

  • Jerome Harrison was traded straight up for Mike Bell according to Jay Glazer.

LMFAO!! now THIS gives me renewed faith in H3. 😁

don't know shinolah about Bell but in the vids i found he looks to have good speed and quick accel, good vision, he's effective between the tackles, he runs with reckless abandon and he covers the ball with both hands in traffic.

huge "toughness" upgrade over harrison...i like it.

  • If only Hardesty was not injured, we could have traded Harrison for a decent #2 WR atleast.

Hopefully Bell is an able RB and once Hillis and Hardesty are back we could have the best bruiser pack in the AFC !

seems we're pretty stocked in the #2 WR category...

    how about a strong safety?

  • Either would work, but in the end it is important to have running backs....good ones.

Very few make it the entire season anymore.

As long as Mangini is the coach, this is a run first team. Considering our division and local weather, that is fine by me. Running isn't impacted by the elements as much as throwing the ball.

Add in the fact that at least for now, Colt is our QB in wait, we need backs we can count on. Even with Hillis, Bell, and Hardesty we don't have too many backs. All are big and push the pile to some degree, so if one goes down we don't have to change a thing in the way we plan to play the game. Keep it mostly between the tackles and drive the ball.

Based on what I am seeing with our addition of big backs, I am beginning to see a trend that points to us selecting a big tackle for the right side fairly early in the next draft. It may not be in the first round as we stand a chance of drafting fairly early, but I would say round 2 brings in some more beef for the offensive line.

Just a rant here.....but I would be surprised if we change coaches at this point....meaning going in to next season. I am seeing improved play even though we aren't winning yet. We are in every game and we aren't getting beat up. It's almost to the point we are the ones doing the beating up on a weekly basis.

I see a plan in place. One that will keep us in games against anybody and maybe soon enough beating anybody we face.

It would shock me if Holmgren and Heckert don't see that the team isn't that far away. We are really only a few players away from a solid team, and a few more from a team that wins...often.

A couple of playmakers on each side of the ball would make this season much different. For me it is a RT and a receiver on O and a safety and LB on D. We may disagree a bit on what we would like to see, but we have something going here and finally have something on which we can build.

We don't need to blow it up at this point.....let's keep moving forward.

  • good post. i thoroughly agree about the RT. and if Watson improves a bit, i'll scratch TE off my list.

Nicely worded (as usual). I would say that the great unknown in all of this is what Holmgren defines as "progress". It certainly doesn't matter what anyone else's definition is because ultimately it's Holmgren's call. The fact that he kept Mangini at all leads me to believe he must really have been impressed because there was no other reason to do so. I would like to see how good this OL could be with Lauvao playing on the right. I think we'd all be pleased.

Ballpeen, I wish I could say that making the OL better is going to give the Browns a big boost but I simply don't see it that way. I think that there are two issues on offense.

    1) QB play. It's a QB driven league. Your QB plays well. You win. It's that simple. I am not saying that Seneca or Colt could not be good enough in the future it's just that QB play has arguably cost us every loss we have.

    2) Receivers. It's hard to understand this as it seems to be a "chicken or the egg" argument. A good QB may make these guys better. I saw a lot of guys getting open against the Falcons later in the game and no ball came their way. I don't know that these receivers can't be good enough but we certainly don't have enough receiving production to keep defenses from stacking the box. At the game on Sunday, there was a play in the fourth quarter where Stuckey became open beautifully on a corner route about twenty or thirty yards downfield. Jake didn't see him. He couldn't have been more open. He and the underneath receiver had vertically stretched the corner and the safety to that side pressed down onto the TE.

I, too, hope they don't blow it up. I see a tough and physical team on both sides of the ball and if they could add a few elements, we could be talking some real competitiveness soon. I expected to be annoyed with Daboll's playcalling up close on Sunday but I wasn't. For the most part, the plan worked. We were too banged up and Jake didn't deliver.

This guys total career carries are a little more that starting full time backs get in one season, and he only has 5 fumbles. Plus his two in one game came his rookie year, where you would expect a back to drop some balls.

Which is more reason why he shouldn't of put the ball on the ground 5 times in 370 plus carries.

Harrison 4 times in 302 carries. Its a wash, fumble-wise. Not a good argument for or against either player.

Mostly agree 'Peen. What I love about the Browns O this year is "here we come, try and stop us". How many times did we see the Browns last year get stuffed on first and goal from the 2, or third and a yard?

OTOH, what the Browns lack is- effective running sets up effective play action- and we can't fully take advantage of that. Teams will stack the house in the box all day until the Browns prove they can consistently beat it over the top- and they've yet to do so. Getting rid of Edwards "I never saw a pass I can't drop" was addition by subtraction- but the guy could do one thing- command coverage deep. MoMass is at best a #2, and Robo will not be on the 2011 roster IMHO.

  • Canton Mike and I were talking last evening... we both wonder where the hell the slant passes are. Is Dabol that dense? MoMass and Robo should sit down and watch a bunch of film of Warfield playing for the Browns. (Dabol should join them)

The Browns have finally built up their oline, and they can force a successful 3rd and short run anytime they want to.

the secondary is dramatically improved, linebackers are improved, the oline right side is improved, the entire oline play has been near the top of the NFL, and the rb's are improved...

I do think robo needs to step up, and MoMass needs to start being more elusive on his routes.....to be used more in the passing game.

We just need a qb who can see the field more quickly than Wallace does. I thought that was JD, but he got hurt so that's pretty much

over for a good while. I think Colt can do that.

A burner blue chippie wr alone would make this team a winner. And, a qb stepping up and taking over and a kick ass safety...

and the Browns are nearly a complete, playoff bound dominant team I think.

Not that far away at all. Huge, huge improvement.

PollyFroggieGirlieMan will get his clock cleaned by Hillis and Bell, and I expect fights to break out when the steelers start getting frustrated

    and start pouting.

Browns will beat the Steelers. It's Browns-squeelers week. It's going to be a great game.

I can't wait for my physical therapist to have to present me with a cold Pepsi. GGG

I'll be the first to take my lumps if he goes for 100 yards. But when I am right, I am right, he will end up costing a game. I've seen him do it many times. At the worst possible time.

But then again, I will be the first one to come back and say I told you so.

IMO: First you need a WR who is brave enough to come across the middle, MoMass, & Robiskie dont have large enough onions to perform that task. And they need to protect Cribbs, he takes enough shots on special teams.

I'm looking for some short, quick patterns over the middle before int's happen on the many flare outs to the sidelines...

I agree....I am to the point I would just forget Robo...go with Stuckey or Mitchell. I say play Moore a lot more....I think he would be great out of the slot.

If you don't have speed and guys who can get open, then you need guys who have good hands and can catch in traffic, and Moore has displayed that.

I think Moore could be a star in this league if given the targets. The only way to 80 catches is to have it thrown your way at least 80 times.
