  • Our defensive front 7 needs to be revamped anyways and if we were ever going to go back to a 4-3 now would be the time..

Ryan lined our guys up 4-3 quite a bit and they all have various 4-3 experience so i dont really have a problem with switching, both defenses have their ups and downs and we currently lack the necessary personnel to run either efficiently or even through the course of a season due to age injuries..

  • I think jauron is a good coach, but I will be praying that we stick with a 3-4. We have no pass rush and switching to a 4-3 would make it that much more blatantly obvious.

So having 4 guys rushing won't be better then 3?

  • I would expect Ryan to be successful in dallas with their defensive talent

I'll go one step further and say they will have a top 5 defense next season.

  • it all points towards a 4-3. Holmgren and Heck came from teams that generally played that scheme, and the DCs being mentioned play the same.

All of that also seems to point towards a Dlineman taken with the first pick since we are weak at the position, and thin at the position.

One of Fairley, Bowers, Dareus, or a name not mentioned much, Aldon Smith would fit well on a 4-3 line.

  • Lol....wow, this is getting sad. Jauron has such invaluable experience commanding the one team the browns have been consistently better than since we returned. Awesome.....

Back to the 4-3....awesome. we get to run the antiquated defense that's predictable and has been going the way of the dodo. I like the arguments for the switch tho.....its obvious that's that we have all the right personnel to run it.....its not like the best defenses in the league are 3-4 (6 of 10), with 5 of which made the playoffs. Jaurons defenses were awesome in Buffalo...lemme tell ya

True, but the Haloti Ngata's and the Kelly Gregg's of the world are hard to find.

Yeah, and he's got ties to Holmgren too.

Not a bad idea at all- bring in a real experienced coordinator (who's had HC experience) to mentor the rookie HC. There's some guys who are great coordinators who were lousy head coaches. Dick LeBeau anyone?

    Don't forget:

    1. Mike Nolan (MIA)

    2. Romeo Crennel (KC)

    3. Jim Hasslet (WAS)

    4. Rod Marinelli (Bears)

    5. Gunther Cunningham (DET)

    6. Dom Capers (GB)

Some have had better success than others. Three of these coaches fielded playoff teams this year. Romeo has five Super Bowl rings from his defensive coaching efforts. Valid argument regarding coaches finding their niche. Could Mangini be joining this list in the future? JTIOT

not when Rubin is your only DT with talent... then we are down 3 lineman and still have 0 pass rushers...

Just to remind you the Browns could have taken Ngata instead of Kameron Wimbley. Could be why the Ravens have a great defense, and the Browns stink. OTOH, we may have found a keeper NT in Rubin- we shall see.

  • Why does a defense have to choose ? I mean, why not draft some freakin SMART defensive front seven, who can play both WELL,

and PLAY either one, off and on, depending on situations and personel matchups?

that would be ideal, but extremely hard to accomplish... especially when we have needs on the offensive side of the ball too.

  • The closer the Browns get to having all the pieces in place, the more impact the right picks will make.

I hope the Browns stay with the 3-4 - it's more versatile...

I believe the Browns defense is headed in the right direction. but all this talk about 4-3 or 3-4 reminds me of this commercial:

  • I imagine that we'll change to the 4-3 and then realize half way through the season that it was a bad move. That's when Big Rapist and Flacco will start throughing the ball right into the middle of our defense for tons of yardage.

Um, they did that this year already...

Really like how Rubin is developing, but philbert really f'd us with that draft screw-up.

  • No need to be sorry, GGG, I just hope the right coordinators are finally in place soon, and the Browns

can get another terrific draft, and make hay this coming season. Beats me who the right ones are, obviously...

  • A change to 4-3 would not be that drastic and our younger players would fit it well, rather we go 4-3 or stay 3-4 our defense is likely going to struggle this year and if holmgren/heckert/shurmurnator are seriously considering the switch now is the ultimate time to do it as there is likely going to be big defensive turnover this offseason regardless...

  • Something I found in Philly paper on Jauron:

"Jauron joined the Eagles' staff three months after he was fired as Buffalo's head coach. He was with the Bills from 2006 to '09, and was the head coach in Chicago from 1999 to 2003.

Eagles coach Andy Reid brought in Jauron - who also had the title of senior assistant - last year to bring some veteran leadership to a young defensive coaching staff headed by 36-year-old Sean McDermott.

Despite the addition, the defense regressed in nearly every statistical category. The defense allowed 31 passing touchdowns and was last in the league in red-zone efficiency. Reid said McDermott would be back next season."

    OH-Boy regression not good!!!

Mcdermott just got canned Jauron is going to be promoted to DC in Philly so we wont be getting him as a DC now. And I want no part of this Mcdermot fellow. Hopefully we can get Wanstedt.

    Eagles send Sean McDermott packing

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/...ermott-packing/

Two years ago, Eagles defensive backs coach Sean McDermott was promoted to the position of defensive coordinator, due to the serious health issues of Jim Johnson, who later would succumb to cancer.

Less than a week after the Eagles’ season ended in the playoffs, McDermott has been fired, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

Hints of trouble for McDermott came when coach Andy Reid became more involved in the defense. In late October, ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio said that McDermott could soon be out.

“There is no question about that,” Paolantonio said. “I don’t know how much input Dick Jauron has in the defensive game plan, I’m sure he has quite a bit, but eventually they may have to make a switch there.”

Some criticized Paolantonio for suggesting that Reid would fire McDermott. (We suggest that Paolantonio not hold his breath in anticipation of any apologies.)

The move comes at a time when Eagles assistant Dick Jauron is drawing interest in Cleveland. Reid possibly realizes that the time has come to bump Jauron up. To do so, Reid first had to bump McDermott out.
