Ok, the above stats are not anything scientific, I was just bored so I threw them in there to bolster my argument that we should be drafting Defense, Defense, Defense! We should go Defensively with our first pick as well.
We don't need a big name wide receiver, because if we are running the WCO we dont need guys that can burn up the track--we need ones with great hands, smart, and most importantly great route runners.
We need some pash rushers that can keep the Pit. and Balt. offenses off the freakin field to give us a fighting chance. Defense wins championships. Feel free to disagree. It's not a glamor pick choosing a defensive player first pick, but it's out of necessity.

I think we are, to the dismay of some posters who only see backs, qb's, and receivers taken with the first pick.
-
What are heckert and holmgren's tendencies in the 1st round? Has either of them taken a receiver in the 1st round? It is pretty obvious that we will need defensive linemen for a 4/3

Didn't the Eagles take Jeremy MacLin in the first round with Heckart there? That was later in the round I believe.

I agree about defense first. If Fairley, Bowers, Peterson or Dareus are there at 6 you draft them ahead of any offensive players. Those players will make an immediate impact. I love Aj Green, but those 4 players are more of a need for this team than Green is. If they are gone than you take Green, however I don't see any of those 5 players not taken in the first five picks so we may be SOL at # 6 for any of them..

Yes they did but he was drafted later at the 19th pick

I would personally go with Patrick Peterson if he's available and doesn't show any major character issues during the draft process.
When your secondary is almost elite, and front seven is just "adequate," I'd rather make the pick that will give you an elite secondary and an adequate front seven than an almost elite secondary and a slightly above adequate font seven.
It's easier to generate pressure on the QB with lock down corners than with an elite pass rusher and a mismatch in the secondary.

I'd rather have a top pass rusher, but if we went Peterson, you wouldn't hear me complain.

Here is what Holmgren did while at Seattle in the first round. I don't believe he was calling the draft shots at Green Bay. While Heckart may have done alot of the evaluations its Andy Reid calling the shots there.
1999 22 Lamar King Defensive End Saginaw Valley State
2000 19 Shaun Alexander Running Back Alabama
2000 22 Chris McIntosh Tackle Wisconsin
2001 9 Koren Robinson Wide Receiver North Carolina State
2001 17 Steve Hutchinson Guard Michigan
2002 28 Jerramy Stevens Tight End Washington
2003 11 Marcus Trufant Cornerback Washington State
2004 23 Marcus Tubbs D. Tackle Texas
2005 26 Chris Spencer Center Mississippi
2006 31 Kelly Jennings Cornerback Miami (Florida)
2007 24 Traded for Deion Branch
2008 28 Lawrence Jackson Defensive End USC

Holmgren is offensive, Heckert is offensive and the head coach is offensive. If AJ Greene is there, they have to take him. If he's not, they might as well have a mass suicide.
-
I also believe we will go defense at 6 and if we go with a 4-3 scheme we may trend defense throughout the process..
Our offense is closer to completion than many think and most of our remaining offensive needs can easily be picked up in trades and or FA..
Whatever heckert does he needs to nail us at least one impact player and a couple solid guys to boot and that is a tall order but i believe heckert is up to the task..

With my mock, I looked a lot at Green, and defensive players. I don't believe the question is
offense or defense,
but more "which player will make the most dramatic impact on his side of the ball, and can we still get the other in the second round".
I ended up taking Marius, and Torrey Smith in the second for that reason, since Green was gone, I figured.
Later on, Green may have the elite speed and agility, that he has to be the guy. Or, you go with the defensive player.
It wasn't until Mangini, that I started to trust the Browns to start making all the right moves in the draft.
Now, I know they will.

Excatly so if Fairley,Bowers,Dareus are all gone as well as A.J. Green what are you gonna do take Robert Quinn a guy who hasnt played ball for a whole season with the #6 overall pick???
Personally i think you draft best player available as well as needs to so if A.J. Green is there we take him cause hes the BPA and fills a need, if hes not and say a guy like Peterson slips you grab him because hes the best player there and your not reaching for a need at Dline
Personally i think they will all be gone by the time we pick and we should trade back
1.Carolina-Bowers
2.Denver-Peterson
3.Buffalo-Fairley
4.Cinncy-A.J Green
5.Arizona-Marceus Dareus
Okay now who do you take, Robert Quinn??? i would trade back and grab Julio Jones or maybe take Prince from Nebraska but he got embrassed by Justin Blackmon

I would love a pass rusher, don't discount another shut-down corner, especially if Peterson happened to be there. The jets are where they are not because of Sanchez but because their corners take the other team's top wideouts out of the gameplan and create an instant pass rush when the QB has to look elsewhere.Zombo
I agree with your point about a CB, but the Browns are not going to tie up that much money at corner. UNLESS we can get a guy like Asomugha in FA. We have far, far bigger needs than another shut down corner in the Draft. BTW, that would move Sheldon Brown to saftey, and Wright to #3 cb, assuming he's still around.
I don't care what our pal Rich says- defense wins championships- but just look at the management team- I think it's a given they go offense, unless Green is already off the board, OR they think they can land an impact wr in the second round. (DA Bungles got lucky with Stinko there)
Yup we need a badass run stuffin' pass rushin' monster (or three) fer sure- but Fairley isn't going to be there @ #6. And look at it the other way Z, a great pass rush makes your corners look a lot better than they are, when they don't have to cover the opposing wideouts for ten seconds. Quick, who's the corners for the Steelers- see what I mean?

Ya know, everybody and their uncle has the Broncos taking Peterson- and I just don't see it. The guy would have to be better than Dion Sanders to rate taking him that high. The Donkeys pass rush sucked last year, so even if Bailey leaves I don't see them taking a corner with the #2 pick.
Ditto the Bengals taking Green- they have Stinko for one more year, like the up and coming WRs already on the roster, and have had good luck picking up talent in the second round. And their defensive front was nothing to write home about.
Arizona needs a quarterback- period. Will they roll the dice on Cam Newton, or say Mallett? Stay tuned.
So IMHO it's entirely possible Green or another top defensive player could be there for the Browns @ #6.

I am more boring than Defense -- I want to trade down and take OL.
