OK, Stone- Steeler troll has started thread- as some of your ilk have claimed never happens. Of course some one here has to take the bait and respond. Should I start deleting this stuff? Aw, shucks, it would spoil all your fun.

PS your ex-Steeler Santonio Homeless is already running his mouth, so there goes that theory.

This guy barely posts and 90% of the time it's a Browns fan. Just sayin.

  • QB against the D.....Huge advantage Steelers

RBs against the D .....Advantage Tie - Mendenhall is a pretty good runner, but LT and Greene are also a good combo

WRs against the D .....I'll take the Jets because Edwards and Holmes are much better than Brown, and Sanders, and an aging ward(who is still reliable)

OL Against the D.......I'll take the Jets. They can run block and pass block excellently

    DL against the O.....Advantage Steelers

LBs against the O......slight advantage Steelers( Steelers LB are faster, and the Jets LB are slightly slower, but still good)

DB......Two words......Darrelle Revis... he is much more a game-changer than Polamalu. How many elite cornerbacks are in the league? I'll give you an answer: only one and his name is Revis....

    Special teams........Advantage Jets

  • Why does everyone think the jets have an edge in special teams? Folk is more inconsistent than nate kaeding come playoff time and Brad Smith is banged up. Whoever kicks for the steelers now has been much better than Reed. Considering this game may be decided by a field goal, I say the steelers have the advantage in special teams...

  • Formerly Sane said:

I don't think your assessment is unfair but I usually look at the matchups rather than the static statistics.

I think you have some huge pee/black glasses on

QB against the D.....Huge advantage Steelers. Some advantage, not sure it is "huge".

RBs against the D .....Advantage Steelers You are basing this simply on the fact that the Steelers have an outstanding run defense....yet I have already given them credit for having the better DL and LB corps, so I will stick to looking at purely the innate quality and talent of the RBs on the field and stick with the Jets as having the better tandem. Certainly it may be possible that the Steeler RBs may out perform the Jet RBs, but that may be because the Steeler RBs are going against a much weaker rush defense.

WRs against the D .....I'll take the Steelers simply because Edwards and Holmes can't "not" do something stupid sooner or later.

Certainly Edwards is capable of making the big drop, but Holmes has certainly shown up big in big games. Again, I am not going on what you hope may happen....but on pure comparative talent.

OL Against the D.......I'll take the Steelers because of our D and somehow, this garbage, patchwork O line has been protecting Ben pretty well.

Same here. I am not buying your theory at all. Nor am I going to allow you to double dip by saying that the Steeler OL is better because the Steeler DL/LBs are better? WTF.

    DL against the O.....Advantage Steelers

LBs against the O......big advantage Steelers

    DB......Two words......Troy Polamalu

However good TP may be as a safety, Revis is the equal or better of him as a CB. In my mind they are a wash. And the rest of the Jets DBs far exceed the Steeler DBs in quality. One of the Steelers WRs will probably pretty much be taken out of the game by Revis....be that Ward or Wallace.....and then the other has to face Cromartie.

    Special teams........Advantage Jets

And then these intangibles that you later posted along with points scored and points allowed per game:

    REGULAR SEASON OFFENSIVE STATS

    .................Jets............Steelers

    TOTAL YDS...351.0 .......345.3

    PASS YDS.....202.6....... 225.1

    RUSH YDS ....148.4...... 120.3

    REGULAR SEASON DEFENSIVE STATS

    .................Jets ........Steelers

    TOTAL YDS...291.5 .... 276.8

    PASS YDS....200.6......214.1

    RUSH YDS....90.9 ...... 62.8

    #7 comin up!

All things said, the game will come down to what most games come down to: Turnovers. Last week the Ravens handed the Steelers several unforced turnovers which were their undoing. TOs will be the difference in this game.

I am not sure what the stats there are (but, I suspect the Steelers have a fair advantage in TO ratio. The Dick LeBeau ballhawking defense is a stat/factor that is most likely in the Steelers favor)

  • Other things:

    1) I wouldn't discount the "Rex factor". Every few games he has to make really dumb coaching decisions. He is past due. He'll probably go for it on a 4th down deep on the Jets side of the field or call some "special" play that will backfire. One dumb HC call can lose it for the Jets.

    2) Sanchez's inconsistency has to be considered. He's played well of late, but hs is highly susceptable to having a really bad game. The Steelers will pressure him too, which won't help his case. He's only completed a few deep balls the last two weeks. I think the Stelers will shut down the Jets running game and it will be up to Sanchez. I don't think he's "elite" and he will struggle.

    3) Big Bendover's mobility opens up opportunites for the Steelers that the Pats didn't have. I expect some passing success at the slot, TE's and short dinks to the backs.

I cannot stand Rex Ryan and I even dislke the Steelers more. I don't want either team to win. Overall, it will be a "suckfest" by both offenses. One coach, probably Ryan will gamble to get 7 points over 3 and will not get any. It will come back to haunt him. Overall, I predict two missed field goal opportunites by the Jets.

I could comment on the rest of your post but I'm just going to comment on this because you are absolutely wrong. A lock down corner is great and Revis certainly is one but he in no way, shape or form has the same effect as Troy Polamalu on defense. He takes the respective teams number one guy out of the game or at least tries to and usually succeeds. Polamalu effects the ENTIRE offense. He plays in and out of the box. Shadows TE,s WR's and RB's and forces QB's to audible almost constantly. He IS a game changer on the best defense in the league. It's also comparing apples to oranges as far as I'm concerned. Absolutely delusional to say Revis is more of a game changer though.

AND in that same breath how many Elite safeties are in the game. Most only reference two when talking safeties. One was just eliminated and the other has beautiful flowing locks.

I think it'll come down more to if the Jets Offensive Line can open up any holes. Without a running game, there is no game for the Jets I really don't think Sanchez can put his offense on his shoulders and win it himself in Pittsburgh in late January.

They aren't going to run the ball on Pittsburgh. The only team that had even a LITTLE bit of success was New England and most of that was because of Brady. The Jets will struggle on the ground and they'll put the game on Sanchez.

I agree with this. Revis is great at what he does and certainly makes it tougher on opposing offenses by taking away their #1 but Polamalu turns games around with his play.

It's pretty hard to predict this game accurately. Based on the Steelers success in recent playoffs, let's face it, most of us are past being pissed off at how successful they have been. Hate them as we do, it's hard not to have a little voice inside saying " ah shit, those f#$%ers are going to win again.

Then add the Jets not having much playoff success and us not really liking Ryan. and blah, blah,blah..... it's easy to think the Steelers are going to kick ass again.

I look at the playoffs from this perspective...........

Age plays a huge factor in football and a few of the Steeler mainstays are not exactly spring chickens. Even Ben has been through some wars himself. Now, are the Steelers a good team? For sure. Another SB?

I don't think so, and here is why.

Unlike playing against Kurt Warner, for the Steelers to get another SB they are going to have to beat two very good, up and coming, young QBs, some potent WRs, running backs and agressive defenses.

Sanchez and Rogers (read bye bye Bears), are both guys who don't worship the Steelers and who are not going to be gun shy if their team gets behind.

For the first time in a long time I picked against New Englinad, and ol Hoorta can tell you first hand, I really think the world of Belichik. However, as good as Brady is, in teh NFL, he's a little long in the tooth.

At my age I have lived to see several changing of the guards, or Shift of power, whatever you want to call it. Namath urinating on the NFL prognosticators. The 64 Browns showing the Powerhouse Colts that football was a young mans game, Tarkenton coming up empty, YA Tittle kneeling on teh frozen field, all busted up and spent.............

Don't even call it the odds, call it common sense. It is highly illogical that the mature Steelers are going to beat two young, up and coming field generals in the 2010/2011 NFL playoffs.

I think Green Bay has too much fire in the oven for any of the other remaining teams, but just as New England looked old and tired, in this weeks 18th game of the season, don't be surprised to see the Steelers get beat.

Will I be surprised if they don't No, but my gut tells me they're played out.

If there are 4th quarter, come from behind antics? It will be Sanchez making the headlines.

I wish I was close enough to have wings and tip a few with my Browns buddies.

    Man, I love football!

The Jets won't be able to run the ball on Sunday which puts the game on Sanchez. Sanchez still hasn't faced the Steeler defense with it's most important COG and as most here and in my own fan base will admit the Steeler defense isn't the same defense without Troy Polamalu. Sanchez may be up and coming but he's not at the point yet to put a game on his back in the AFC Championship game on the road against the best defense in the league with it's best defender back in the line up. The Jets beat Brady because they got to him and despite his success his receiving options don't exactly stretch the field due to their lack of straight line speed. The Pittsburgh pass rush is going to be ruthless and they are going to dare Sanchez to throw the ball. If you watched the last game with the Ravens you also saw Ryan Clark being used in the Polamalu role with Troy more in coverage. I don't know whether that was injury related or not but say it's not and they plan to employ this strategy more on Sunday to keep QB's even more honest and Sanchez is going to be in for a long ass day. He's not going to take the gusty shot over the middle with Polamalu back in coverage.

The Jets are a running team and Pittsburgh has maintained the number one rush defense all year and the number to which they are holding teams is in the top 5 all time. Sanchez is going to have a hell of a time. The Jets nearly lost the first go round and that was without both Heath Miller and Troy. If you recall it was Matt Spaeth dropping not one but two balls in the endzone with Ben fighting for the win. Put Heath in that spot and maybe the ball isn't dropped. I'm sure it will be a good game but I'd be lying if I didn't say I was nice and confident heading in to Sunday. Pittsburgh's offense is better and Pittsburgh's defense is better. Period.

And as far as the "mature" Steelers are concerned in the midst of that "fine aging wine" is a bunch of youth. The old man defense is number one in the league and certainly isn't slowing down. The offense is pretty damn young across the board. The age concerns don't carry much weight. Look at the stats.

Good post, but as someone who's been a fan as long as you, I disagree.

It's going to be Steelers-Bears my friend.

I posted earlier in this thread about the Steelers, I just don't see them losing another AFC Championship on their home field.

The Bears will shock the world and beat Green Bay. I think the Pack is definitely the better team, but the Bears will persevere. Green Bay has had 4 or 5 elimination games in a row, it's going to catch up with them this weekend.

Quite frankly Gipper, your responses are so bazaar I can't even find the words to defuse them.

Light years between Ben and Mark.....LIGHT YEARS!

ONLY when it comes to as I said their "resume". When it comes to actual Quarterbacking skills I simply have to say "Not so fast my friend", I am not sure at this point that BR is a more accurate passer, a better reader of defenses, etc. Sure, BR has those two rings, but this is only Sanchez 2d season, and he is already playing in his second conference championship, so his resume contains some stuff too. As I said, I do give the strong edge to BR, but it is more like a few lengths (using horse racing terminology).

As far as the RB's against the D Steelers!

Again, light years between Reavis and Polamalu.....LIGHT YEARS Reavis does one component of the total better than TP, TP does ALL the rest better than DR......LIGHT YEARS! Any QB would tell you that....with DR, you simply don't throw at him, with TP, you have to worry every single play about him.......LIGHT YEARS

Again, here, this is simply your boner for TP talking. Does he do some things different than Reavis? Sure. He might tackle and blitz better than Reavis. (though I can't tell you how many times I saw him whiff on tackles in that game vs. the ratbirds), but the 90% job of a DB is to stop the other teams WRs. Reavis does that better than anyone.

I will grant you one thing that Froggiegirlyman does better than Reavis: Show off by running around with his silly hair flying.
