Let's Hear It For Engineers And Science

The guy gets so hard for disasters and "threats" and end of the world talk. It's almost like he's a paranoid or something.

T. The map or chart or press release or whatever the hell you may have looked at was phony.

DISCLAIMER: Australian Radiation Services is aware of information about radioactive contamination being spread from the Japanese nuclear reactor incident released under the ARS logo and name. We wish to be clear that this information has not originated from ARS and as such distance ourselves from any such misinformation.
Just relax.

VT, glad to hear that. I hope all eyes are watching this.
Atleast someone doesn't go spewing venom all over the boards and has some rational thoughts. I threw that out there to see if anyone knew if there was anything to it. If you go to drudgereport.com The heading in red "Meltdown Alert".
And the link is from the BBC, IMO gives us a broader base of information on the International News.
-
T, I't doesn't look like there's been a meltdown, but there might be. While not good, shouldn't cause concern for you. Most of the fallout, if any, that's going to escape is going to be local, and they're telling people in the area to take shelter as a precaution. The hydrogen tank explosions didn't release any fallout, but they did play some role in cooling, and a meltdown is a primary concern.
Thankfully, Japanese engineers (as well as ours a la 3 Mile Island) take much more precautions with nuclear plants than the Soviets did. Chernobyl was bad because there was an explosion IN the reactor, which basically flung all sorts of nasty radioactive shit into the local area, and is why no one can live there still. In Japan, it's going to be different because their reactors took that into account. If a meltdown occurs, then that means that the hot radioactive material is literally going to melt through the equipment holding it because there's no water to cool it. But if that happens, it's not going to be some grand explosion, it might look more like the containment building taking a crap. A glowing, radioactive crap.
If that's the case, then yes, there is a chance that wind will carry some radioactive isotopes all the way to California. The chance of one isotope getting blown to the US is very unlikely. The chance that enough isotopes get blown to Cali and give cancer to our west coast is EXTREMELY unlikely. I mean, at the moment, there's a better chance I have a three way with Halle Berry and Kate Beckinsale than there is of this causing harm to Americans.
-
Here, read this. These guys know more about it than I do.
-
Chernobyl was a highly flawed design, probably the worst that has ever existed for a nuclear power plant. The US or anyone who was not in the old Soviet bloc doesn't have that type of reactor.
The main problem in Chernobyl's aftermath was the STEAM explosion opened the reactor core (blew the lid right off of it and it's surrounding building and started a fire that carried radioactive material high into the air to be deposited all over the world and over Belarus, etc.
An explosion is not a great concern as long as there is no fire or the reactor core is not breached.
-
Let's not forget that engineers in northern Europe first discovered there was an explosion at Chernobyl because they detected excessive amounts of radiation and found that there plants did not have a leak. This forced the Soviets to admit the explosion at Chernobyl. Even with an explosion and fire that bad, minimal amounts of radiation ever reached the US.

How about we all focus on the human problem, not a position.

Cheers. I hope everyone else donates. I would, but I have 50 dollars to my name and need to eat.

I allready donated the other day.
More info on whats going on below.
Watch the whole thing. There are a few problems folks are overlooking.

Speaking of science, here's some Vapor bait:
"The National Center for Science Education has tracked a record-setting number of nine anti-evolution bills introduced in state legislatures since Jan. 1."

Let's talk fallout ramifications next spring when two headed cows, 7 legged lambs and other genetic mutants appear. Study the stats showing incidents of
mental Retardation and thyroid cancer amongst youngsters this time next year. Let the talking heads spin it all they want . The proof will be in the toxic sludge pudding.

Offhand, I wonder why it isn't considered a bad design, for the Japanese nuclear plants to have their
generators and pumps located low enough to be swamped, and stop working, which caused the
rods to overheat.
I mean, from a goofy layman's point of view, why not have them located well up high, since tsunami's aren't unhead of?
NOTE: We keep going to GOOGLE EARTH, and we watch the occurence of earthquakes. The red dots are those that have occured
in the last five minutes. It's unbelievble - and you can scan all over the world.

Hmmm.
Obamao's surgeon general says it would be a good idea to get iodine tablets as a precaution...
on the U.S. west coast.
Yep.

One more for you, Vapor:
"Thirty-one Republicans on the House Energy And Commerce Committee -- the entire Republican contingent on the panel -- declined on Tuesday to vote in support of the very idea that climate change exists."

I just saw the Professor of Harvard Medical School Nuclear program say there is no need to take iodine tablets. The amount of radiation that will get to the USA is way to small to worry about. Iodine tablets fill the thyroid with iodine and prevent radioactive iodine from going in. This makes the body eliminate the radioactive iodine. It does not help with other types of radiation. Another person speaking out there ass.

You do realize that the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant is directly on the shore of the Pacific Ocean? It was swamped by a massive 9.0 earthquake and a 30+ foot tsunami. Use your brain.

Is that the same guy who said there were not any deaths, injuries or any offspring that were mutated from the Chernobyl disaster?
That guy is a liar.
by the way the 4th reactor is completly destroyed, that is the one that housed the spent fuel rods.

I was. You use yours. You're inferring, that engineers, who can build a NUCLEAR ENERGY SITE, on the PACIFIC OCEAN, with the shoreline not far from a gigantic fault line,
couldn't figure out that the generators and pumps may have to be put UP on a flatform higher than 30 feet?
It wasn't mile high, DH, it was 30'. The generators and pumps were damaged, and that is why they had to have workers try to keep pumping water, but the workers
had to leave the one plant. Now, they (we?) are using helicopters to drop water on it. And, our Navy is being ordered to stay FIFTY MILES AWAY, because of the
danger of a meltdown. Come on, man.
