    Haaaaaaahhhhh. It's the tea party.

...Of course, politicians of all stripes are not faring well among the public these days. But in data we have recently collected, the Tea Party ranks lower than any of the 23 other groups we asked about — lower than both Republicans and Democrats. It is even less popular than much maligned groups like “atheists” and “Muslims.” Interestingly, one group that approaches it in unpopularity is the Christian Right.

    ...

So what do Tea Partiers have in common? They are overwhelmingly white, but even compared to other white Republicans, they had a low regard for immigrants and blacks long before Barack Obama was president, and they still do.

More important, they were disproportionately social conservatives in 2006 — opposing abortion, for example — and still are today. Next to being a Republican, the strongest predictor of being a Tea Party supporter today was a desire, back in 2006, to see religion play a prominent role in politics. And Tea Partiers continue to hold these views: they seek “deeply religious” elected officials, approve of religious leaders’ engaging in politics and want religion brought into political debates. The Tea Party’s generals may say their overriding concern is a smaller government, but not their rank and file, who are more concerned about putting God in government.

This inclination among the Tea Party faithful to mix religion and politics explains their support for Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and Gov. Rick Perry of Texas. Their appeal to Tea Partiers lies less in what they say about the budget or taxes, and more in their overt use of religious language and imagery, including Mrs. Bachmann’s lengthy prayers at campaign stops and Mr. Perry’s prayer rally in Houston.

Yet it is precisely this infusion of religion into politics that most Americans increasingly oppose. While over the last five years Americans have become slightly more conservative economically, they have swung even further in opposition to mingling religion and politics. It thus makes sense that the Tea Party ranks alongside the Christian Right in unpopularity.

    Source: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/17/opinion/crashing-the-tea-party.html?_r=2&src=me&ref=general

Times are a-changin'. Pretty soon atheists won't be the minority. But I think what we can all agree on is that we want the Tea Party to go away. I mean, let's get the government out of our lives unless the topic is abortion or marriage, then of course the government should come down on it. I'm going to leave you with a quote from my Algebra 2 teacher, Jerry Dwyer (I'm pretty sure the Marianists were paying for his degree, and after he got it, he left the lay community like a champion)...

    Consistency, thou art a jewel

meh. Not every Christian wants to mingle government and politics. Most Christians are moderate and not radical.

Most Christians aren't in the Tea Party.

And Bunker, not sure what point you're trying to make with the C&L article. It's basically only this paragraph

Sounds like this is the point Democrats should hit over and over again: That this nation was founded on religious freedom (and now includes the freedom not to worship) and we don't need elected officials interfering with that. Once we breach the wall separating church and state, we're no longer America.

Maybe I'm misreading it, but that seems to agree with the point of view from the original article.

And while the public image of the Tea Party focuses on a desire to shrink government, concern over big government is hardly the only or even the most important predictor of Tea Party support among voters.

Right, and I find it hypocritical that they are so vocal about big government, except when it comes to the gays. Government needs to step in and say gays can't marry. Government needs to step in and say we are a Christian nation. It's inconsistent.

That's dumb. There is no new gov spending in saying what true marriage is. No new government agency.

Please. I'm being nice in only saying that's "dumb".....

you all are the ones who want government to decide in your favor, vs the status quo.

We know what marriage is, and don't want to live in some warped, perverted "utopia"

by progressive anti-status, anti-American leftist design. The majority of Americans aren't favoring

changing what marriage is. Your point?

The poll would be maybe, opposite if it had been conducted on Fox News, right?

Cal, that link you posted in your other thread (it should really be in this one, we don't need two topics about the same issue), it's from December of 2009. Now, this may come as a surprise to you, but you should know that popularity is not static. Popularity can change with time. The article that I linked to is from August of 2011; three days ago, in fact. The tea party had a bunch of steam awhile ago, but they squandered their opportunity to be taken seriously by coming off as a bunch of religious nuts.

You are correct, except it was fun to directly show you that I can post all sorts of polls.

And yes, they change, and the people polled change,

                and ....

it doesn't matter. Want me to find a better one? LOL

I can't believe it's 2011, and you want to make this forum a gay perversion rally instead of

criticizing Obamaofor his dramatic failures and anti-America crap. You know, he's our "president"...

lol, because gay marriage isn't a political issue. Get real. Politicians are discussing it.

And guess what, Obama has made it clear that people who don't have faith should be included in political discourse.

You're right. gay marriage isn't a political issue- it's a legal issue- as to what constitutes a "legal" marriage. Between "persons". Well, go look up your history and find out Native Americans weren't considered "Persons" back when. I'm all for declaring cows & sheep "persons" so you can marry them- that's next on the agenda.

And, btw, legal decisions are not political decisions. They are based on the freakin LAW.

That is, unless it's a gay, marxist, corrupt "activist" judge who makes up his/her as they are told..... by the left....

Politicians pass gas, but that doesn't make gas politics.

Judges decide the merits of what they are having new for breakfast, but that doesn't make it law.

Good grief, Vaporized. Do you read "Bizarro" superman comic books at your age?

Sounds like someone didn't graduate their American government class in high school.
