What's The Most Troublesome Aspect Of Our Team Going Into The Regular Season?
-
depth
-
Nothing troubles me about our Browns, it ain't my job, and it ain't my responsibility.
What I did notice though:
I think Aldhous sp? Smith, rb, makes the team. He's coachable just fine, a smart kid, and is lightning in a bottle. The team needs the speed.
I like the Porter kid, but he isn't explosive like Smith.
I think this is Robiskie's (oh, however you spell it GGG) breakout year. Gregg Little is going to be a star. Momass needs to get out there.
The first string defense is dynamic. The difference is huge, even from last year. Titus Brown was a big loss, but there are some nice lb's to fit in.
The little guy Skine, is a helluva player. The first string secondary is very excellent, the backups can play, too. The whole defense kicks ass often, teams don't get away with much,
and it's a new staff with a new defense and some new players. No worries here.
The Browns are very fortunate they drafted Pinkston if they can't find anybody else on the fa list. The backup offensive tackles need to be upgraded,
The backup oline got pushed around, and the backup dline did, too. But, there are all those players who won't be there after Sat.
Jarrett Brown made some beautiful throws. Then, later, he goes goofy and makes mistakes. Even Kosar mentioned that he is talented, but needs
to go to the practice squad. He just isn't ready for prime time. I think Wallace can play - but the years in a different offense seems to make it harder for him
to adapt, and he doesn't run like he used to be able to, and he doesn't see the field nearly instantly like McCoy does.
I really hope the Bears release Sanzenbacher sp? so the Browns can get him. I love the Browns draft, but I'd love this addition if it happened.
And I wouldn't release Windsor - he's a player. We'll see....
I love the instensity and the aggressiveness of these Browns. They mean business, and the love the game. I love the playcalling FINALLY !!!
I love the 4-3 - it's a brilliant move. And, this offense works, well, with the first string...
And Cameron Jordan? Or was it Jordan Cameron? He is amazing - man, what a talent. He has to make the team - he won't last
two seconds on the practice squad.
Of course there is a lack of depth. They only started getting their first string teams intact this year. Later on, and in the waiver wire, the depth really gets going.
The Browns now have a team, where anybody they put on the practice squad is going to be frantically screened by other teams.
It didn't used to be that way, so REJOICE ! @@
These Browns are really exciting to watch on both sides of the ball. It's going to be a great season.

Good post Cal... Optimistic and positive. I like that attitude with the season just around the corner... From reading the boxes from last night's game, it sounds life Robo had a good time... three time targeted, three balls caught-- one for a long-ish gain... How was his separation last night?
And... per your statement... "Greg Little is going to be a star."... didn't see much from him in the games stats... What did you see on the field? I really hope that he steps up!!!!
Thanks for the info...

My observations and thoughts..
Short off season no time to gel..
New untested coaches,players and systems..
Very Suspect O-line..
Very suspect WR corp..
Very suspect DEs..
Weak and non durable LB corp..
Very suspect FS position..
All combined with very little proven depth anywhere has to lead me to believe another 5 win season could be on tap...
My hopes are high but my expectations are low..
We are potentially only one or two injuries away from a long season..
If colt goes down its game over..
-
How can folks get so "down" after all the changes & limited implementation time? We are headed toward better days, but there is still lots to do. Certainly our talent today is far upgraded than in years past. we still need upgrades & depth. As previously stated, if Colt goes down, or Thomas, Haden, Mack, etc....we are hurting big time. We will get there, but no one has a magic wand that reverses performance in a year. The Front Office & Coaching staff "MO" has certainly changed, so let's enjoy Brown's football 2011 knowing that we're on the right path & not looking to blow things up at the end of the season.
Also, keep in mind that some "roster" players last night were playing beside others who will be cut, so those roster players were limited by their supporting cast.

I couldn't agree more about depth, but did anyone think we'd really have any to start with? If you're taking the whole body of the pre-season to make your opinions, then yea i'll listen to you. But don't take hardly anything from last night's game other than depth concerns. The 4th pre-season game is absolutely nothing more than giving the guys battling for a roster spot a chance to shine.

Exactly! The Browns have come a long way, but some expectations are totally unrealistic. Depth will come, but it will take awhile. I can be patient as we are finally doing things in a consistent way....I think it's the right way.

Just to touch on the predictability thing....fellas this is a new coaching staff....a new offensive system....a new defensive system...a bunch of young inexperienced players...and oh yeah a shortened...check that non existent off season. It's gonna be vanilla for the first half of the season due to the lockout. And I know I know...what about all the other teams that had the same disadvantage of a shortened off season. Well when you have a Tom Brady or Ben Roethlisberger...or Philip Rivers....throw in an Adrian Peterson...or Arian Foster...with Andre Johnson...or Larry Fitzgerald that's familiar with an offensive system...or if you have the same punishing defense you've had for years....a shortened off season doesn't make nearly the difference that it does when it's all brand new. I know......I'm with you guys about being tired of losing but everyone on this thing knows that there's little chance that this team is going to see the playoffs as is (with all the disadvantages I mentioned before).
-
I suppose the most troubling thing about the team is the possible lack of playmakers on both the O and the D.
Now, there are some candidates. Hillis, McCoy, Cribbs, Watson, Little (JT). Taylor, Ward, Haden on D. HOw premier a playmaker some of these are remains to be seen. And it would be nice to see, say a Lawrence Taylor at LB. We don't have anything there.
-
Haha I just read carson palmer might show up to cinci to stick it to mike brown. They would be forced to trade, release or keep him as a 11.5 million dollar back up cause they are set on dalton as there starter

Yep, that's the buzz down in Bungleland. Supposedly has talked directly with Mike Brown, so there's dialogue going on. Actually, as you mentioned Palmer has Eleven Million reasons to stick it to Mike Brown. That's a $700,000 per week paycheck. I don't think Palmer would do it- because he's too high character- but he could just show up and do a bad attitude act to force a trade.
As to my concerns about the Browns- 1) Can Pinkston play at a high level, and 2) Can anyone on this team play decent at linebacker?

Is it the Defense or the lack of depth? Or, anything else you may think will be our Achilles Heel.

Again the problem as it has been for years.......................is lack of skill players on offense .....thus no punch when needed
why is the question always about D when Offense wins championships?????????????????

Just blowing off some steam but I think we could use the extra reps

I tend to go into the season optimistic and then get mad when they don't do well ... that is my m.o. ... always higher expectatations than most.
However, this year, this team, really is cause for excitement.
First of all, I'm in love with Colt McCoy as a QB. As much as I was lukewarm on Frye and Quinn from the get go ... I just think this kid is going to be not just good, but great. He is just so damn accurate, this offense is built for him. And he just has all the intangibles and correct mindset for a QB. Colt, alone, is a reason to be much more optimistic than usual.
Secondly, last season we discovered a true feautre back that was just pounding defenses in Hillis. We've been waiting forever for this guy. The man is a truck, he can run inside, run outside, catch passes, knock people on their asses ... he's a perfect fit at tailback.
Then we've got two Pro Bowlers on the offensive line and lots of young guy who look like they are going to stick and make a long-term impact. If we can block then McCoy and Hillis are going to explode on teams.
Defensively, I LOVE the picks of Taylor and Sheard, and the tall dude we picked from Minnesota last year (Jayme Mitchell?) and while our linebacker corp lacks depth, the starters are very, very solid ... expect big things from DQwell this year.
Then, you look at our secondary, and we just happened to draft two outright STARS last year in Haden in Ward. Plus we've got the eveteran back there and some new guys who have passed the eyeball test so far.
Colt, Hillis, Little, Moore, Thomas, Mack, Rubin, Sheard, Taylor, Mitchell, Bernard, Ward, Haden ... stop me when I've mentioned someone over 27!
And then Josh Cribbs is, in my opinion, going to bounce back from a down year to regain his status as one of the most exciting, and effective, players in the NFL again.
How can you NOT be excited about this team?
Zombo
Glad to hear your optimism. I've been optimistic about the team since they came back into the league. I think between this team and my college team (Usf) my optimism has been slightly jaded.
I agree that this is the best looking browns team since their return. I'm pumped but I wont be overly optimistic this time until I have reason. I get so excited for football season but in the end both my teams are usually disappointing.
Ill definitely give them a chance, but I'm going to hold off on getting too excited til we see what happens when the regular season starts.
Fyi hope everyone can root for Usf against Notre Dame tomorrow. I know Mitchel will be.

well, I add it all up about Greg Little. I mean, I saw him on this show on the NFL channel before the draft.
I forget the coach's name, but he was working two wr's out. One was A.J. Green, and the other was Greg Little.
I swear a few times I got confused as to which one was which one, although I was working on my novel at the same time.
Both learned fast, and Little's change of direction was immediate just as Green's was. And as I watched him in practice,
he has different moves to stay away from jams at the iine, and he is still shiFts at near full speed to create separation.
He can leap and catch the ball and look all-pro doing it, to me. Now, how long does it take for his instincts to take over?
I don't think it will take long. He seems to have picked up this offense, after a long break from football, and I look for his name to be
well known to defenses the Browns play. Just a hunch - or educated ? wishful thinking. He is very, very, very athletic on the move,
and I don't see him as having nothin but very good hands. we'll see.

The Coach was Jon Gruden, and the other guy in the video was Michael Irvin. Yeah, at least with no contact, fundamentally Little and AJ Green look to be the same player. Remains to be seen if the same holds true when we start playing for real. Little's stock dropped because of the suspension. Ditto that for Phil Taylor.

I think that at this point it's pick your poison. You play your starters and a couple of key guys get hurt before it's for keeps...I can see the reasoning behind sitting our key guys. Sadly in our case it's all brand spanking new so it would seem like we should have our starters out there. It's one or the other my man. As far as New England goes, Bilicheck (spelling) knows what he has in front of him and has known for a number of years so it's easier for him to take that chance. With us not really knowing what we have it'd really suck to lose someone that can make a difference all for the sake of squeezing in a few reps. The safe bet is to be vanilla until these guys catch on...which in the first two games they showed they're capable of catching on and go from there.

Playmakers- let's see. Bengals. Carson Palmer, Terrell Owens, Cedric Benson, Mucho Stinko. Playmakers all. Damn, they should have won the Super Bowl with all that freaking talent.
You want better WRs? Where did Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald get the Cardinals? Nowhere? Class dismissed.
And since when did the #7 in the NFL in total yardage- that would be Peyton Hillis (other than a qb) not rate as a top tier skill player?

The man has got some sound points. This is going to take some time fellas. We barely even know the team and some of us are saying shit can em'. Why? Only to get more guys we know little to nothing about? Scooping up sloppy seconds doesn't always bode well for teams. Just ask Tom Brady who can't seem to figure out how LOL "Mucho Stikno's" hands mysteriously have turned to stone. If you all remember back in the 80's we rarely discussed anyone new on the Browns...it's because we kept the same guys around and got to know about them and appreciate them for the talents they had. But that takes more than 4 preseason games I can promise you that.

You are passionate about the Browns, I get it. But you are too close to the situation to see the truth, the teams are very similar, although the Bengals right now are the better franchise.
Sorry, Tom I live in Bungleland, and you need to have your head examined if you really believe this.
The Bengals HAVE drafted a solid qb and have gone after talented WRs and RBs. They have a discipline problem but also have a better overall talent level than the Browns.
Andy Dalton hasn't played a freaking down in a regular season game, and you're so sure of this? What I do know is they pissed off a Pro Bowl quarterback (Carson Palmer) so bad he retired rather than play for them. They let one of the most coveted FA CBs (Jonathan Joseph) walk rather than paying him- of which they had ample $$$ to do so. Talented RBs can't help you if they're in jail (Cedric Benson), WRs if they're dead (Chris Henry), tear your locker room apart (Terrell Owens), or would rather do bull riding publicity stunts (Mucho Stinko).
Neither team can beat the Steelers. Both teams make tons of mistakes. Fans of the two teams accuse each other of being the worst NFL franchise.
THe Bengals have made it to 2 SBs.
And lost both times. Close but no cigar. Blind squirrels find acorns- the Browns are still looking for theirs. BTW, dem Bungles might have won a SB if one of their "discipline problems" hadn't decided to get coked up the night before the Big Game.
Both teams have a fkucked up owners.
I'll take the dumb owner willing to spend money over the dumb cheap ass every day- and twice on gameday.
The only thing different about these two shit teams is that the players have different names. You could put together a Bengals - Browns all star team and it would be identical to either one of the component teams.
Now you're really talking out your ass. Bullsh***t give the Browns AJ Green, Leon Hall, Domata Peko the Bengals LBs for depth and the Browns are up in the contender range.
Two shit teams. Mirror images of each other.
Your take- which don't mean shit.
