I agree with you. Even the people, like myself, who want to stick with colt and pass on RGIII aren't sold on Colt as a franchise quarterback but realize that the weapons on offense are the Browns most pathetic position groups and we could make the most strides in that regard. Again at that Big 12 agrument, Colt had a prolific career in the Big 12 and has not done much in the NFL, yet you want to take RGIII who has had even less success in the same conference?

Sorry I haven't been around a whole lot recently I've been shifting gears into basketball (my thunder are tearing it up outside of tonight obviously) but when comparing Colt's career in college to RG3's you have to keep in mind what schools they went to. Colt went to Texas, a football powerhouse with tons of talent around him, and RG3 went to Baylor, a team that occupied the bottom of the standings in not only the Big 12 South but the entire Big 12 (the north was awful) for as long as I can remember in my experience watching college ball. Baylor was a joke until RG3 came to town so the comparison between the two is apples and oranges and if anything, RG3's college career is exponently more impressive then Colt's if you look at the impact they had on there respective teams. Now if RG3 played for OU or possibly even OSU (Okla. St.) I could understand saying he had less success. If your going to compare RG3 with any of our current QB's, strictly on college career, he is a more successful Secenca Wallace, who had a pretty good career at Iowa State. They're both athletic QB who can run and who brought a perennial cellar-dweller into national prominence, albeit for only a short time although the book is still out on Baylor. Besides college careers though, there really isn't any comparison between the three. RG3 definitely has the most talent and upside of the three in my opinion.

Here is the problem: you get these Texas schools that produce these QBs with all these gawdy numbers.

Like David Klingler, Andre Ware, Case Keesum, Graham Harrell, Kevin Kolb, even Colt McCoy etcetcetc. and are they are are numbers compilers. They don't make it in the NFL. I am concerned that RGIII is just one of those.

To be honest, I would prefer a Pac 10, Big 10, SEC QB....they seem to have a more proven track record.

  • One reason i gotta say i do like Griffin is the fact that he took Baylor a basically non-football school and turned them into a contender, that takes alot from a person to go into a enviorment that is a losing culture and turn it around...Also makes me think he may have what it takes to come to Cleveland and do good because they have to turn this Franchise around and it will take a strong indiviudal to do just that..Just a Thought

I completely understand where your coming from and I'm by no means attempting to defend any Texas school. I was merely defending RG3 in comparison to Colt in regards to their college careers. Its not fair to compare what was done at Texas with what was done at Baylor.

Honestly I've been going back and forth on RG3 but this argument is definitely one of his major positives. I can't stress how much of a joke Baylor was until RG3 got there. While he was the first recruit signed by Baylor in the Art Briles regime and, while coaching changes obviously have an impact on changing the culture of a program they can't do it all by themselves and you have to have players that buy into it and implement it on the field, something I think we can all agree, that RG3 did quite well. It remains to be seen if that can translate in the NFL but that experience of changing a losing culture certainly won't hurt at the next level.

  • baylor was also a joke in his first 3 seasons there....4-8, 3-9, 7-6, 10-3. lets not act like he was performing miracles. he only started to grasp the system in his 3rd year....one of the simplest systems in college. everyone says he's smart, but as an engineer, i know for a fact that there's a huge difference in book smarts and street smarts. we know he's book smart....but it tool him till his senior year to finally make an impact. demonstration says slow learner...

    but im just a hater...

You say Senior year he's still a Junior Correct???

  • doesn't appear so....he started as a true freshman in '08.

  • yeah and maybe baylor's coaching staff had something to do with putting baylor football on the map, which to me is no great feat given their competition, at least in the last couple of years.

You wanna wait til next year and take Denard Robinson? Is it fair to say that he and RGIII are bit of two peas in a pod?

I just don't know if that is an NFL pod....or an NCAA pod. (hell, it might be a CFL pod)

  • i don't know where everyone go the idea that holmgren wants a running qb. where in his history as GM or HC did he ever have a running qb? sure favre could scramble out of the pocket to throw the ball but mccoy does that.

i know holmgren is the prez and not the GM but you know he's got more than 50% say in anything QB.

    don't get it.

Holmgren tutored Steve Young who was a pretty fair running QB in the WCO.

  • yeah he was, but i can't think of any other. i'm sure holmgren had his say on drafting him as well.

He seems to be pretty fond of Seneca as well.

He only played 3 games in that 3-9 year. I don't know for sure but I assume he got a medical red-shirt that year which would make him a junior. When he was at the helm he made Baylor into a actual threat. He's made an impact ever since he stepped foot on Baylor's campus. The record might not show it but again, this is Baylor we're talking about. Its similar to saying Hillis didn't make an impact for the Browns in 2010 because our record was 5-11.

It does appear so he is a Junior, i was just pointing out how you hate on him when you dont know if he is a Senior but your try to use that agasnt him when hes really not...

  • Here's some info on Matt Flynn going to Washington which would make it more likely Cleveland lands RG3

Citing sources inside the organization, ESPN 980 Washington's Chris Russell reports the Redskins are "very interested" in free agent QB Matt Flynn.

ESPN's Mel Kiper told reporters earlier in the day that "grapevine" talk suggested the Redskins didn't have a high opinion of Flynn. Russell knows "for sure," though, that coach Mike Shanahan and OC Kyle Shanahan had a "detailed conversation" two weeks ago on Flynn's six-touchdown, 480-yard performance against the Lions in the regular season finale. Whereas Charley Casserly suggested Flynn wouldn't be a good fit for the Redskins offense, one team source tells Russell the two systems are "almost the same."

Graham Harrell threw for more than 4,500 yards three straight seasons, and couldn't crack our starting roster. What makes RG3 any different, honestly?

Contrary to the point I'm trying to make, look for Graham Harrell to be the next big free agent in 3 years. With Matt Flynn out of the picture, and Green Bay maybe possibly the closest thing to a "system" offense in the NFL, Harrell is in prime position.

Which begs the question, is Matt Flynn just a system QB?

sigh...thats the difference between an academic senior and an athletic junior...

i suppose you know about his torn ACL his 2nd year? and that was the reason he redshirted? suppose i should use the athletic designation so i dont have to reply to frail little arguments like this.

  • Troy Smith ---RG3 same type player? Are their stats close to the same?

The difference is huge. Harrell was no where near and mobile and dangerous with his feet, and more importantly Harrell's arm strength makes McCoy look like the strong man competition guys throwing kegs 100 feet into the air. The guy had drop throwing anything accurate past 10 yards, where as RGIII flixs accurate 50+ yard bombs down field with ease.

  • ...unless those superman socks of his can help him leap tall buildings in a single bound or fly downfield 10 yards above everyone on the defense, the smart money is on TR3NT or Blackmon. Colt and RG3 are the "same guy"...
