The Browns Need ... Another Game Breaker Wr

The Browns Board

  • Richardson, "Kendall Wright" at 22... then maybe get back in and take minnifield? I don't think it would take "that much" being as it's a late 1st right? But to take Blackmon, Richardson and Minnifield it probably would take a lot...

  • Did u just say it's better to bust on higher picks than lower?

There hasn't been as much of a "sure thing" in a running back prospect in Trent Richardson since Adrian Peterson. If you bust on a top tier prospect it's better than if you take a shot on a lower rated player hoping they can be just as good. AKA Montario Hardesty, big difference between a second round pick and a 1st.

Took the words right off my keyboard 😉

Richardson is just a beast. He's fast and he hasn't had an injure plagued past. I mean, there are certain reasons that make Richardson appealing to us Browns Fans. I think that we all fell in love with Peyton Hillis... Well, imagine what Peyton brought us last year, except Richardson is poised to bring that for us every game for a long time to come. Can Hillis be the back he was last year for us again? I hope so but who knows if he'll even be here in June. I think IDEALLY what you would want is to score an Arian Foster but that's like playing the lottery. So I would suggest signing Hillis to a 3rd down back/FB sub with Marecic role with an incentive laden contract... percentage of games available, rushing at least 800 yards in a season, catching so many passes or going for x amount of touchdowns. Then with Richardson, Hillis, Jackson and Hardesty...with Armond Smith on PS waiting for Jackson and Hardesty to go down...

Obi did okay but he wasn't a factor in any of the games. I think he's serviceable at best but clearly no feature back. We need a DOMINANT feature back in Cleveland. If Hillis isn't the guy then it has to be Richardson. We need a sturdy stallion to tote the rock. There isn't 1 single reliable runningback on our roster. I love Hillis but his lack of production or ability to get to the field last year really raised a lot of questions and showed us what a mess RB is in if Hillis goes down.

Without a monster RB the Defenses don't have to make the hard decisions, they can tee off on Colt which in turn makes his job of making us respectable much, much harder.

Though I would love to go so many different routes with the number 4... WR, CB, RB, DE, LB, OT we only have 1 pick at four and will have to pick our poison. Luckily we have another pick at 22 and that really helps, I just wish we had one more inside the top 15. I think we should at least consider moving some picks to get that 3rd first rounder. WR, RB, CB would definitely put us up over the top in terms of our overall moves last year and to see the dividends pay out for us this year. Imagine a game changing wide receiver, and dominating running back and a shutdown corner... all in the first day. Mel Kipers head would really explode... 😳

I am a HUGE Richardson fan & agree that taking him 1st instantly takes pressure off Colt. I'll get burned for this, but I've told Cal that if RG3 was there at 4, I'd HOPE that Washington at 6 wanted him, trade down, still get Richardson, then get a WR (there will be some good ones still at 22). If he's already gone, take Richardson, get the WR in free agency (IF they'll come here), then get the best available after that.

Once again, we can speculate all we want, but we have to wait & see. One thing for certain, there WILL be a stud available at 4.

No I'm saying you can't really be blamed for busting on a number 4 overall pick. If a player is rated high enough to take in the top 10 then it's hard to control their success. I'm saying you look stupider if you reach for a player or take a player in a later round hoping they are going to be just as good as the top 10 talent. I'm saying why say "we can get a solid back in a later round" and pass on Richardson to go after Chris Polk or whoever and expect that they will be the same player as Richardson.

Darn tootin' you can get a solid back in later rounds.

Sorry, we're not taking Richardson @ #4, and here's why.

1A)Yeah, Richardson is gonna be great, surest thing since Adrian Peterson- who helped the Vikings win all of two games before he got hurt.

1B) Marice Jones Drew (second round pick) led the league in rushing for the 5-11 Jaguars.

    2) Ray Rice Second round pick

    3) Michael Turner fifth round pick

    4) LeSean McCoy Second round pick

    5) Arian Forster UFA.

That's the top five in rushing, if you haven't figured it out yet.

    6) Go take a look at the running backs for the Giants & Patriots, and tell me how studly they are, and you can throw in the team that should have been in the Super bowl Green Bay. PS Frank Gore was a third round pick in case you're interested.

My point is in the current NFL, there is no reason in hell to take a running back with the #4 overall pick. Richardson may even fall to #22, where incidentally is about where the Steelers drafted Rashard Mendenhall.

You're completely right and I know you can get a good back anywhere. But why pass up a "sure thing" to take a shot in the dark. Did you think the Falcons got Michael Turner from Northern Illinois, the Bears Matt Forte from Tulane, or the Texans Arian Foster and thought "this is exactly the back I want to build a team around"? Personally I think teams can get by pretty well without a solid run game as long as they have weapons on the outside (Packers, Lions, Giants). But if you are going to take a running back high in the draft then really go for the best one. Or wait until later in the draft...

That's the big "if". I'm not averse to drafting Richardson- but only if Hillis takes a hike. We have plenty of other high value needs @ #4 besides a running back.

  • I agree on running backs.

90% of a backs success is based on two things. A coach who is committed to running the ball and a O-line who can drive block. If you have that, you are going to have a back who gains a bunch of yards.

  • You cannot be forgiven for busting with a top4 pick - it's the other way around, busting with a top5 pick means the GM loses his job for his inability to properly evaluate talent.

Bobby Beathard - out as GM after drafting Leaf at 2 in 1997. He also gave the Cardinals a #1 pick in the '98 draft, a #1 pick in the '99 draft, a 2nd-round pick in the '98 draft, and two players, Eric Metcalf and Patrick Sapp to move up. And still failed.

Al Davis - fired himself as GM after cutting Jamarcus Russell. Not entirely true, God decided it was Al's time, but Davis should have fired himself after this.

Tom Braatz - out as GM for GB after drafting Tony Mandarich. Who replaced Braatz? Ron Wolf.

No way Kalil and Luck aren't 2 of the first 3 picks - so we get whichever one of RG3 or Blackmon aren't picked. Can't go wrong, IMHO!

How can you suggest if the Browns take Blackmon or Richardson that they aren't at worst solid starters that they can't evaluate talent? Any team in the NFL right now, if picking at 4, would have Richardson and Blackmon in the top 5-6 on their Big Board. The above statement just isn't true. There are stud athletes all throughout the first 2 rounds. The truth is no one really know who is good and who isn't. If a team busts on a top tier prospect, they are set back quite a bit as a top 5 pick still costs a lot of money (not as much as it used to but still a lot of money tied up for a player to bust).

But I'm not saying that I think Richardson will bust. I'm saying that Heckert won't draft a runningback that high. It doesn't matter what our opinions are, because Heckert is the guy making the decisions. I think we will trade down if we can. If no one is wanting to trade, then we either take Blackmon, Claiborne, or RG3. And my money would be on the first two..

yeah if you need a RB or WR, and then what value do you place those 2 needs over other positional needs. what's more important to the browns in this year's draft a RB or beefing up the line to block for him? hey we definitely need a WR but do you put that need over the need to be able to stop the run or to cover a WR or draft someone who can rush the opponent's QB?

yeah adrian peterson is great but he's already showing signs of breaking down. that's why the average shelf-life of guys that play that position is what, an average of 3 years? get a good Olineman and they can last a decade. so i think that goes into consideration as well.

i really wouldn't be surprised if we draft defense with our 2 first round picks. i'd love to have the redskins trade picks with us plus give us another 2nd or 3rd rounder.

That is just the opinion of some guy who wrote on about.com. If you look at the stud WRs in football today, most had their breakout season in their 2nd year: Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Greg Jennings, Larry Fitzgerald, DeSean Jackson, Brandon Marshall, Mike Wallace, Hakeem Nicks, ect.

Well ya that would be stupid if you really needed a RB and waited until the 5th round to grab one. I'm saying that the Browns are more likely to draft a RB in the 2nd or 3rd round than in the 1st. That's what Heckert has done in the past..

RBs usually on last around 5 years so why not spend your top 5 pick on someone who could potentially play for 10+ years?

    Absolutely wrong.

You should be blamed more for busting on a number 4 overall pick. If you're drafting that high, you better be as positive as you can that the player is a sure thing.

Busting on late picks isn't a bust, because they're not expected to be Pro Bowlers.

Richardson isn't top 5 talent, and we don't need him anyway. He's Peyton Hillis, just very slightly faster. Even if we don't resign Hillis, taking a RB that early is still very unlikely, as their shelf life is considerably lower than those of other positions.

Unless he's Adrian Peterson, no thank you. And Trent Richardson is no AP.

  • Browns should take Blackmon, if he's available. I think he's going to St. Louis, but they could also realistically get Kalil.

If St. Louis get Kalil, Blackmon should drop to the Browns. If Blackmon is off the board, I think the Browns will end up with Griffin.

If that happens with the 22nd pick, get the best WR available, which most likely will be Wright or Floyd.

Drafting a RB that early, IMO is too risky. If he turns out to be as good as Peterson, it'll be worth it. But if he isn't, the Browns won't get any real value from the pick. You rarely see nowadays teams that have a single back as their focus of their offense. The value from a RB in with a top 10 pick just isn't worth it.

Now, if Richardson falls to 22nd overall, as unlikely as it is, then I'd think would be a good pick to draft him with.

I agree with these statements, in the modern game running backs just aren't as important as they used to be. If you want Richardson i see the best value would be to trade down out of the 4th pick to the 7th so the Jaguars can get Blackmon and the browns would then get extra picks and in all likelihood Richardson would still be on the board at 7.

That's 30 guys that could help the Browns. There should be a lot of other picks going in between these guys so it's a given that at least 3 of these guys will be there for us to pick by the time we're done in the second round...

Personally- Trent Richardson, Vontaze Burfict and Chase Minnifield would be what I consider a successful first two rounds. We'll still need help at WR but we've got 5 more rounds to find a gem plus Free Agency...

These three guys I feel will have the biggest IMPACT on the Browns to make something happen for us fans in 2012.

    1a)Richardson

    1b)Burfict

2)Minnifield... though I have a feeling we're gonna need to get back into the first round late to secure this pick...

A Beast Runningback that hasn't been seen come out the draft since Peterson. An Intimidating Linebacker that will bring the Orange Crush. A Shutdown/Lockdown corner opposite Joe Haden + His Dad started the "Dawg Pound", we have ties and roots. We need Chase since we passed Clay's boys. I would even consider taking Chase at #22 overall just to be sure that we get OUR GUY.

I agree the team is worse off busting on top 10 picks. I'm saying you look even stupider if you pass on say Richardson with your first pick because you want to take Dan Herron in the 5th...

no you dont. you incorrectly think that GMs expect a 6th rounder to become a top 10 talent. i think in order to obtain a GM job in the NFL, you might have to be a little bit smarter than that. the reality is they are merely hoping for contributors at that point, guys to push those elder to him to get better, as theirs a hungry rookie nipping at his heels.

if luck busts, would the colts look bad for taking him? doubt it.....then ask yourself if luck busts, and indy passed on taking him, you really think they'd be viewed as stupid? i would think they'd be lauded as geniuses for seeing a bust in the surest thing since steriods in james harrisons piss.

there was another back....supposed to be a complete game changer.....hmmm.....plays for the bills....oh, undrafted free agent fred jackson? probably the guy thats mostly relegated to 3rd downs and the return game, CJ spiller, a 9th overall pick only a couple years ago.

stop acting like richardson is a cant miss talent.....guys like him come along all the time, except most of those other guys wont require a top 10 pick.
