The Browns Need ... Another Game Breaker Wr

The Browns Board

  • You cannot be forgiven for busting with a top4 pick - it's the other way around, busting with a top5 pick means the GM loses his job for his inability to properly evaluate talent.

Bobby Beathard - out as GM after drafting Leaf at 2 in 1997. He also gave the Cardinals a #1 pick in the '98 draft, a #1 pick in the '99 draft, a 2nd-round pick in the '98 draft, and two players, Eric Metcalf and Patrick Sapp to move up. And still failed.

Al Davis - fired himself as GM after cutting Jamarcus Russell. Not entirely true, God decided it was Al's time, but Davis should have fired himself after this.

Tom Braatz - out as GM for GB after drafting Tony Mandarich. Who replaced Braatz? Ron Wolf.

No way Kalil and Luck aren't 2 of the first 3 picks - so we get whichever one of RG3 or Blackmon aren't picked. Can't go wrong, IMHO!

So you are saying if Luck turns out to be Leaf then the Colts are idiots for taking him? No of course not. How can you suggest if the Browns take Blackmon or Richardson that they aren't at worst solid starters that they can't evaluate talent? Any team in the NFL right now, if picking at 4, would have Richardson and Blackmon in the top 5-6 on their Big Board. It's not the Browns evaluation of talent because they are not the only ones that evaluate players.

There is no point in doing the above when there are plenty of other solid running backs in the draft. I would be surprised if Heckert uses a 1st round pick on a running back. I think we will take one in the 2nd or 3rd round..

There hasn't been as much of a "sure thing" in a running back prospect in Trent Richardson since Adrian Peterson. If you bust on a top tier prospect it's better than if you take a shot on a lower rated player hoping they can be just as good. AKA Montario Hardesty, big difference between a second round pick and a 1st.

The above statement just isn't true. There are stud athletes all throughout the first 2 rounds. The truth is no one really know who is good and who isn't. If a team busts on a top tier prospect, they are set back quite a bit as a top 5 pick still costs a lot of money (not as much as it used to but still a lot of money tied up for a player to bust).

But I'm not saying that I think Richardson will bust. I'm saying that Heckert won't draft a runningback that high. It doesn't matter what our opinions are, because Heckert is the guy making the decisions. I think we will trade down if we can. If no one is wanting to trade, then we either take Blackmon, Claiborne, or RG3. And my money would be on the first two..

yeah if you need a RB or WR, and then what value do you place those 2 needs over other positional needs. what's more important to the browns in this year's draft a RB or beefing up the line to block for him? hey we definitely need a WR but do you put that need over the need to be able to stop the run or to cover a WR or draft someone who can rush the opponent's QB?

yeah adrian peterson is great but he's already showing signs of breaking down. that's why the average shelf-life of guys that play that position is what, an average of 3 years? get a good Olineman and they can last a decade. so i think that goes into consideration as well.

i really wouldn't be surprised if we draft defense with our 2 first round picks. i'd love to have the redskins trade picks with us plus give us another 2nd or 3rd rounder.

History shows that the 2nd season is often the coming out party! I really think the Browns will pick a GOOD WR in this years 1st round. Weapons on O = greatest need! I think the D is pretty good and getting better!

Actually for most receivers it's the 3rd year when they come into their own.

That is just the opinion of some guy who wrote on about.com. If you look at the stud WRs in football today, most had their breakout season in their 2nd year: Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Greg Jennings, Larry Fitzgerald, DeSean Jackson, Brandon Marshall, Mike Wallace, Hakeem Nicks, ect.

Well ya that would be stupid if you really needed a RB and waited until the 5th round to grab one. I'm saying that the Browns are more likely to draft a RB in the 2nd or 3rd round than in the 1st. That's what Heckert has done in the past..

RBs usually on last around 5 years so why not spend your top 5 pick on someone who could potentially play for 10+ years?

  • @choco said:

Did u just say it's better to bust on higher picks than lower?

No I'm saying you can't really be blamed for busting on a number 4 overall pick. If a player is rated high enough to take in the top 10 then it's hard to control their success. I'm saying you look stupider if you reach for a player or take a player in a later round hoping they are going to be just as good as the top 10 talent. I'm saying why say "we can get a solid back in a later round" and pass on Richardson to go after Chris Polk or whoever and expect that they will be the same player as Richardson.

    Absolutely wrong.

You should be blamed more for busting on a number 4 overall pick. If you're drafting that high, you better be as positive as you can that the player is a sure thing.

Busting on late picks isn't a bust, because they're not expected to be Pro Bowlers.

Richardson isn't top 5 talent, and we don't need him anyway. He's Peyton Hillis, just very slightly faster. Even if we don't resign Hillis, taking a RB that early is still very unlikely, as their shelf life is considerably lower than those of other positions.

Unless he's Adrian Peterson, no thank you. And Trent Richardson is no AP.

  • Browns should take Blackmon, if he's available. I think he's going to St. Louis, but they could also realistically get Kalil.

If St. Louis get Kalil, Blackmon should drop to the Browns. If Blackmon is off the board, I think the Browns will end up with Griffin.

If that happens with the 22nd pick, get the best WR available, which most likely will be Wright or Floyd.

Drafting a RB that early, IMO is too risky. If he turns out to be as good as Peterson, it'll be worth it. But if he isn't, the Browns won't get any real value from the pick. You rarely see nowadays teams that have a single back as their focus of their offense. The value from a RB in with a top 10 pick just isn't worth it.

Now, if Richardson falls to 22nd overall, as unlikely as it is, then I'd think would be a good pick to draft him with.

I agree with these statements, in the modern game running backs just aren't as important as they used to be. If you want Richardson i see the best value would be to trade down out of the 4th pick to the 7th so the Jaguars can get Blackmon and the browns would then get extra picks and in all likelihood Richardson would still be on the board at 7.

That's 30 guys that could help the Browns. There should be a lot of other picks going in between these guys so it's a given that at least 3 of these guys will be there for us to pick by the time we're done in the second round...

Personally- Trent Richardson, Vontaze Burfict and Chase Minnifield would be what I consider a successful first two rounds. We'll still need help at WR but we've got 5 more rounds to find a gem plus Free Agency...

These three guys I feel will have the biggest IMPACT on the Browns to make something happen for us fans in 2012.

    1a)Richardson

    1b)Burfict

2)Minnifield... though I have a feeling we're gonna need to get back into the first round late to secure this pick...

A Beast Runningback that hasn't been seen come out the draft since Peterson. An Intimidating Linebacker that will bring the Orange Crush. A Shutdown/Lockdown corner opposite Joe Haden + His Dad started the "Dawg Pound", we have ties and roots. We need Chase since we passed Clay's boys. I would even consider taking Chase at #22 overall just to be sure that we get OUR GUY.

no you dont. you incorrectly think that GMs expect a 6th rounder to become a top 10 talent. i think in order to obtain a GM job in the NFL, you might have to be a little bit smarter than that. the reality is they are merely hoping for contributors at that point, guys to push those elder to him to get better, as theirs a hungry rookie nipping at his heels.

if luck busts, would the colts look bad for taking him? doubt it.....then ask yourself if luck busts, and indy passed on taking him, you really think they'd be viewed as stupid? i would think they'd be lauded as geniuses for seeing a bust in the surest thing since steriods in james harrisons piss.

there was another back....supposed to be a complete game changer.....hmmm.....plays for the bills....oh, undrafted free agent fred jackson? probably the guy thats mostly relegated to 3rd downs and the return game, CJ spiller, a 9th overall pick only a couple years ago.

stop acting like richardson is a cant miss talent.....guys like him come along all the time, except most of those other guys wont require a top 10 pick.

  • Richardson IS a can't miss talent... sorry but it IS FACT. When you have someone who totes the rock the way he totes it, it don't matter who you're running it against- he's gonna win. The kid has VISION, SPEED, STRENGTH, ELUSIVENESS, CATCHING ABILITY, AND HE'S GOT LOW MILEAGE!!! You can't ask for anything better.. Oh wait, I forgot he's under 6 foot tall! That's bad you might say, well technically, no it isn't! He shorter and harder to find behind a Big OL. By the time a defense recognizes he has the ball it'll be too little to late and he'll be long gone. He gonna be better than even Ray Rice. Ravens have the formula, Rice and Williams. Well, if we play our cards right we'll 1up them by marching out Richardson and Hillis- and if that happens...LOOK OUT!

    This. Perfect.

It's too hard to say someone is a "can't miss" prospect because they're playing against college players. Players that are, more often than not, going to be working 9-5 and arguing online about their favorite teams in a couple years just like the rest of us.

A small percentage of college players go on to play in the NFL, and a small percentage of those players actually go on to be perennial Pro Bowlers.

There is no "can't miss" prospect. There are guys that other people have boners for, and will swear up and down they are God's gifts to mankind (see Rich and Maurice Clarett). But at the end of the day, there's no perfect prospect.

  • additionally, coaching also matters. its no coincidence pittsburgh turns out linebackers, that new england picks guys off the street to run the rock. the other side of the coin is that even guys with tons of talent....the edwards, greens, warrens, robiskies....turn out to bust because they never learn how to play properly. poor coaching has hurt many of our past draft picks....

  • the edwards, greens, warrens, robiskies Choco

    *****************************

I disagree here. Coaching can't teach love for the game, and intensity, and the desire to win.

You have it, or you don't. The above guys don't, never will/never did.

The past idiots like savage etc, drafted on film and the combine.

I admit - other successful teams draft for intensity and love for the game, too.

  • The Browns have many needs.

Even if they drafted Richardson (which they will not) he would not look good -- because that Browns OL last year was terrible. We need a good OL, like Cincy, before getting a RB. Cincinnati makes an average-at-best Benson look like a borderline all-pro because their OL is great.

That first round should be QB/WR (if RG3 is around) or WR then OL/DE/CB depending on who's available. Minnifield in the second would be a great throwback pick.
