Rg3 Not A Good Fit For The Browns?
-
His accuracy and decision making could very well look a lot worse then it is because of the lack of protection. He constantly had people in his face and had to rush many throws and also made some poor decisions at times because of it. He is also a SECOND year QB. All young QB's make questionable decisions. It is part of there development as a QB. Nothing abnormal about that.
Right, his stats will improve and he'll make less mistakes if all the components around him are upgraded (by how much? I'm not sure, if I had to guess: still slightly below league average). But if you don't see limitations, then you're not paying attention. Even when given time, his ability to throw downfield with any accuracy is negligible.
I'm not so sure that his decision making will improve that much. He doesn't look much different than Charlie Frye to me (and why should he? they were both picked in the same round if I remember correctly).
My main point is that Colt lacks the skills to become an elite QB. This is not a major revelation, because no NFL teams thought that he did (which is why he was a 3rd rounder)! In two years, I haven't seen anything to suggest he's the next Tom Brady or Joe Montana (i.e. later round picks that DID become elite). Do you genuinely believe that he CAN become elite? We have 2 first round picks this year. If ever there was a time to gamble on a first round QB, this is a good year.

I don't know if Colt will be an elite QB. No one really does. I didn't think Brees would be after year 2 ... or even year 3. Look how that turned out though. What I do know is if a rookie QB inherits the same situation Colt is in he is going to fail too because the offense right now is set up for failure. Many pieces need to be added. I just would prefer to see all that fixed before we go and waste a top end pick on a QB ... if Colt is truly that bad we will be picking top 5 next year also ... the difference will be we filled some more holes and can plug a QB right in and not have to worry about him getting killed every play trying to throw to WRs who can't catch the ball.

you don't know shit. people get so enamored with one player or their position that they forget about the other ten guys on the field with him.
show me where RG3 has done anything comparable to aaron rodgers. the one highlight they keep showing of RG3 at baylor is him in a wide open backfield with no one near him throwing the ball to the receiver in the end zone who also had no one around him. does that sound like NFL caliber competition?
you waltz in here and spout shit about browns fans only wanting mediocre players. did the browns fans draft colt mccoy dumbshit? no. it was people in the FO who thought he was a steal at the number we drafted him at. he hasn't been all that spectacular, but look at what he's been through in his first couple of years. injury, a new coach, a new system, a lame running game, no flippin wide receivers at all, and taking a pounding on any given sunday in arguably one of the best divisions in the NFL. all this while aaron rodgers was buying donuts for team meetings and keeping the bench warm. did you even see the packers wide receivers play this year? their #4 is better than our #1.
and if i'm not mistaken didn't both mccoy and RG3 play in the same whack ass conference? so mccoy lit up all the records at texas, but sucks compared to RG3 who lit up the numbers for the baylor bears. have you seen that conference lately. texas ain't shit a&m is moving.....who the fuck has baylor played? TCU? they fell off this year too. so let's go draft somebody with less accomplishments in the same crappy conference, oh and let's draft his wide receiver too.
we can be the baylor browns. GTFO!
You need to calm down and separate your attachment to an individual player and look at the broad picture. A picture that displays an average quarterback who will be 26 years old and hasn't won in the division... ever.
You can make all the excuses and emotional rants you want, but ultimately, the only player on the field who touches the ball every play is the quarterback. So mediocre play from a team is indicative of mediocre quarterbacks.
These are the facts.

False. The center touches the ball as much, if not more than the QB.
And neither of which touch the ball when their team is on defense.
Furthermore, mediocre plays is not indicative of a mediocre QB. When a team averages 95 yards per game on the ground, among the lowest in the league, how is the blame supposed to be placed on the QB? When our receivers lead the league in dropped passes with over 35, how is the blame to be placed on the QB? When the defense gives up nearly 5 YPA on the ground, how is the blame to be placed on the QB?
There are many more factors than the QB involved in our mediocre play. RG3 will not fix those by himself. It will not happen.
We averaged more receiving YPG than our opponents, all the while leading the league in dropped passes. It's not just Colt's fault. I don't believe he's a franchise QB by any stretch of the imagination, but he's not necessarily losing us games. If the opportunity arises for us to trade back and add more first and second round talent to our severely depraved roster, then the powers that be will absolutely trade back.
There will be another QB next season to destroy some schools records and everybody will be salivating over him. Then, I say take him. The difference between then and now is that by then we'll have acquired some more talent for the QB to throw to.
Greg Little cannot simply be our only weapon.

You realize 26 isn't old, right? And you realize that Colt just finished his second year, right?? How many QB's were elite QB's after year 2 ended?? I will give you a hint ... none. And a lot of elite QB's and HOF QB's took a few years to develop ... especially the ones who played in the WCO. Be patient give it time. Are you going to call for RGIII head after he has 2 shit years?

very interesting comment coming from you....ya know....the new guy who just joined with a screen name beginning in RGIII. i wont bore anyone else by making fun of your hypocrisy.

I've been in favor of doing what it takes to get RG3 for a while now.....but i've since changed my mind.
What has bothered me most is that Colt has not had the time in this O to perfect it..
I think he personally has everything necessary to succeed in the WCO....but he needs time to get it right.
But mostly the Browns need to get talent in case Colt doesnt work out, the new QB will have talent to work with in a few years.
Lets not sell Colt short though. The guy has done the best he can with what he was given...no off-season, poor o-line play, poor WR play, RB injuries....HORRIBLE play calling.
He has good accuracy, good legs, smarts, respect of team. He needs WR's that get open consistently and Colt's arm is strong enough to make most throws.

Colt is 3.5 years older than RG...and will have been drafted 3 years prior to RG. Age is not the issue..

Possibly, but not always. I am sure you are too young to recall, but back in the 70s there was unanimous consent that Archie Manning was one of the Top 3-5 QBs in the league....but the Saints were still, despite having one of the best QBs in the game always big losers because the rest of the team just plain old sucked swamp water. So, it is great to have a quality QB...but it is equally as important to have a quality team around him.
The Steelers went 15-1 in 2004 with a raw...and not very good QB at the time...starting for them. Yes, get the QB, but not at the expense of the other 21+ positions on the team.

ah hem. let's see. i think you misspoke. you are enamored with RG3 plain and simple. I have said let's address the other needs on the team before we DRAFT ANOTHER QB 2 years after just drafting one.
hell you'd even want to trade up to get the guy. so lose a pick, not gain one on a team that needs like ten players makes a lot of sense. if we drafted 3 key defensive players this year , hell baring injuries we would be almost a complete top ten defense in a division where it counts in november and december and hopefully january and february. wr and rt. that would be a good draft in my eyes.
see what colt does with another year under this blow-ass offensive scheme. if he sucks we move on. but what is with this shit that "oh it's been 2 years and our qb can't cut it shit?" no qb with this squad could cut it.
oh and here's my favorite: "QB TALENT LIKE THIS ONLY COMES AROUND ONCE IN A LIFETIME SO YOU GOTTA DO ALL YOU CAN TO GET THIS GUY!!!!"
 let's see in my lifetime i've seen dan marino, jim kelly, bernie kosar, brett favre, aaron rodgers, tom brady, drew brees, joe montana, steve young.................(need i go on) drafted. so that argument is as stupid as you are. -

So which conference should we look for "actual" QB prospects? The Pac 12? Well their defensive numbers are right in line with the Big 12. The Big 10? All they are offering is Kirk Cousins and attempting to take credit for an ACC prospect in Russell Wilson. The SEC offers no QB prospects this year. The Big 12 and Pac 12 offer the most QB talent this year and next. Bitch about the defense all you want but the SEC is the only conference that can boast of elite defenses and they have no QB prospects this year. Either way if we take a QB this year they will have played against inferior defensive talent. Its not just the Big 12, its every conference besides the SEC.

yeah at another position other than QB this year? how about a DE or LB that wants to crush QBs or anything else coming their way.....you don't think we could use someone like that? or a WR that can blast past any CB or LB and CATCH a ball for big yards. you don't think we could use a guy like that? a better than patrick petersen CB? a speed back? a RT? how about getting some swagger in those positions?
i've really tried to get your intrigue with RG3. but we just drafted a QB 2 years ago. who else do you quit on after 2 years of changes, no weapons, offensive suckiness on all levels? are you RG3's agent?
i don't remember myself ever acting like this past 5 years old. "if i don't get what i want' waaa"
can u give it a rest for one day at least?

Aren't dogging it huh? The reason I'm constantly sticking up for the Big 12 is because they are constantly dogged on here. At least give the conference a fair shake and the respect it deserves. Considering you couldn't name the top two teams in the conference this year, failing to realize that A&M has been mediocre at best the past 5 to 6 years and really doesn't harm the Big 12 as much as Nebraska leaving, plus the additions of TCU and West Virginia next year offsetting losses from the previous two years, it doesn't seem like you really grasp the conference as a whole. You hear the snipets from ESPN saying the Big 12 has shaky defenses and assume it to be gospel. Now I don't pretend to have a great understanding of all the major football conferences but at the same time, I never say anything negative towards them, especially if I have to take a shot in the dark to make a comment concerning them.
As far as drafting a QB this year, Holmgren has made it pretty clear that they don't believe Colt is their guy. If they did they wouldn't even be entertaining the thought of drafting another QB. Also keep in mind that Colt is a third round pick and has never been viewed as our franchise QB so the whole argument that we shouldn't draft a QB just because we drafted one 2 years ago doesn't really fit. You give most 1st round QB picks at least 3 years but not a 3rd rounder. I'd rather take a chance at a QB this year (preferably RG3) then wait until next year and choose between what I believe to be lesser talent, or at least, talent that is more dependent on their surrounding talent. Now if we can stay at 4 and 22, this would be the perfect draft to go after a big time QB prospect as we'll still have the 22 and the rest of our draft to pick up talent to fill in the rest of the roster. I'd be fine with trading a 3 or 4 to trade up, maybe even a 2nd, but I have a hard time parting with the 22nd as well. Then you're getting into pretty risky territory in terms of losing an extra first round prospect if the RG3 pick doesn't work out. Although I have a really hard time seeing the Ram's pass on Blackmon. If the Ram's need anything it is a big time WR.
-
The Big 12 is garbage, plain and simple.
-
Browns fans, why are you afraid of such swagger and potential greatness?
That is the question...Browns fans, why are you afraid of such swagger and potential greatness?
That is the question...
Well, here's your answer.... LOL, I don't think "swagger" has ever won an NFL game. And guys like Jamarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf, Joey Harrington, and Akilli Smith all had "potential" greatness out the wazoo. Gipper had some interesting stats. In the years 1995-2009 18 quarterbacks were taken with the first 5 picks. Six of them underachieved, and four of them were flat out major busts. So history says RGIII is far from a "sure thing". Falling in love with a particular player at this early stage of the draft derby is something I'm not about to do.
So what Miktoxic just said- you his agent or something? Did you happen to go to Baylor, and watch every one of his games? I'm sure Holmgren, Shurmur and Childress will watch a few hundred hours of tape on the guy, interview him, send 1\2 the staff to Indy and his Pro day and make a VERY informed decision about whether they should draft RGIII- or not. They certainly know enough about McCoy to determine if he warrants another year @ qb with an improved offense.
I have no bias one way or another- MHO is Griffin is a great talent- but he's not as sure a pick as Andrew Luck- and he's not invincible either- or you forgetting about that torn ACL? I'm glad Griffin can motor at a high speed, because if we don't find a decent RT, he's going to need it. Gee, he's got a great arm for those 60 yard bombs- too bad the Browns don't have a WR like Torrey Smith or Mike Wallace who can actually get behind a defense.
And sure enough- the Browns have plenty of other needs- like a DE, LB, and CB that could warrant using the #4 pick on.
-
the big 12 shouldn't even really be a football conference. take off the helmets and line their belt with flags. i believe gipper posted the breakdown that.....a big 12 QB has never won a superbowl?
swagger? lmao...i remember another QB that was taking endorsement deals before he ever threw an NFL pass. he's currently riding the pine well behind tebow.
-
Cleveland fans, you really need to come out your shell. Drafting RGIII is not the equivalent of your daughter marrying a black man. And even if it was, the union should be one of celebration, not disdain.
I sense so much more than 'player evaluation' is going on when it comes to Robert Griffin III. I feel words are flying all over the place reeking of racial undertones. Many posts about the guy lack logic, and really, this is disappointment. Too much of this is going on.
This is just my opinion, tho...
-
lmao, 3 pages in and the race card has already been pulled up. wow.
stupid.
-
What else can it be?? I'm not saying this is an overt case but the attachment to McCoy is baffling when you consider its in direction opposition to the general reaction to Griffin. Even moreso, the Browns as a staff themselves won't commit the same support to McCoy as a large faction of tlthis board. Just today Shurmur said the quarterback situation is a 'process'.
What the hell does that mean?
What does that mean for McCoy?
I mean, seriously, the dude can barely throw a 15 yard out and all I hear is about receivers dropping passes and the right aide of the offensive line is weak.
No, the quarterback is weak. Drafting a 6'1 receiver who runs a 4.5 at #4 won't change this. Drafting a right tackle won't change this.
As a fanbase, the consensus should be directly behind Robert Griffin III. Enough of the trash product. Enough of the excuses. Get this guy so we Browns fans who are about winning can have a team to support.

and if you want anyone to take you seriously, which appears that as of now noone does, then stop lumping everyone into the same boat of liking mccoy, and actually try reading.
its so simple to you because youre a simpleton...u lack complex thought processes necessary to keep up. so you just chime in with a hjighlight vid or fluff piece while ignoring the football discussion by simply stating we all love colt.
so if you dont really wanna talk football, and continue on your personal mission to get your boyfriend drafted, then do it elsewhere. cause we'll just continue to ignore your bullshit just as you ignore ours.
