you don't have to wonder when this will be................it's every year for the draft.

you remember, don't you? you guys pick in the top 5-10 spots and start cheering and touting how this new messiah will be the one to lead you guys to the promised land.

i mean that's what happened after you drafted trich and brandon "father time" weeden..........how'd that work out so far?0-5?

These guys are rookies. Let's look at the Browns first round picks lately:

This year Weeden and TR look to be wise choices. TR is the real thing, too soon to tell about BW#

Last year: Phil Taylor was one of the best rookie defenders in the league (the Browns miss him since his is out with injury).

The year before that 2010 Joe Haden is a Pro Bowler.

The year before that 2009 Alex Mack is a Pro Bowler

In 2008 they didn't have a pick til the 4th round

The year before 2007, Joe Thomas is Hall of Fame talent. OK, Brady Quinn was a bust.

The problem has not been with their first rounders..except Quinn. It has been that their 2e and 3rd rounders have a lot of time not stood up to provide the talent...or depth necessary:

2012 Rd. 2 Schwartz too early

2011 Rd. 2 Sheard and Little. Sheard is productive. Little's dropsies are well noted. Not looking good for him

2010 Rd. 2 TJ Ward, start Rd. 3 Hardesty, McCoy, Lauvao....all possible backup talent at best

    2009 Rd. 2 Robiskie...bust, MoMass...becoming solid, David Veikune...bust

    2008-----

2007 Eric Wright. Got toasted here, went to Detroit as FA where he got burnt.

That's why we need a BETTER GM. Most GM's hit the first rounders.(if they don't they are not around long) It's the "GREAT" GM's that get high quality talent later in the draft. The body of the good teams are 3-6 round picks.

I am not the hugest Shurmur fan but yesterday is not on him. Weeden didn't play well and the Browns have the worst DBs in the league. You subtract Jackson from the mix and that's trouble. If Trent continues to drop passes you'll continue to see Obi on 3rd down...

He dropped one pass in the game that I saw. This entire season is on Shurmur. The guy is a lousy head coach and should never have been hired..

He has had some drops this year and if keeps playing like he did yesterday I think we'll see him more on 3rd down, also Obi blocks really well. Shurmur isn't losing with Packer talent, this team isn't very deep and they have glaring holes on both sides...

Shurmer WOULD lose with Packer talent. The guy is NOT a headcoach. He fights with the media, he makes bad decision after bad decision all game long. He's horrible at clock management. Hell he's had 2 penalties called against HIMSELF. The guy could be given the keys to a ferrari and smash it before he left the driveway

That's silly.....regardless of how inept the coaches may be, the QB has the ultimate decision of where and when to throw the ball.

The problem here is that this QB does not have the choice about what play to call. On 3rd and 1 Shurmur is calling for a pass 30 yards across the field to the sideline that is designed to gain 3 actual yards. If he had the option to say "Fuck that, here, TR, take this ball up the gut and get us a first down" it would be better, wouldn't it? Yea, it is his responsibility to not throw a pick..but why should he have been put in that position in the first place.

Exactly, a rookie QB is gonna throw picks no matter how good he is.

It's up to the coach whether he puts Weeden in a position to succeed or fail, and Shurmur put him in a position to fail.

Taking your star RB out on 3rd and 1 to pass after he gains 9 yards the previous two carries (when every other third down this entire season you did this you also passed) is complete incompetence.

Ground Hog Day is the exact analogy I would use for the Browns since 1999. Continue to suck, make excuses, fire the coach, fire the front office, hire a new coach, and front office, suck some more... wash... rinse... repeat.

Oh... forgot to throw have a new starting QB to start the season every GOD DAMN YEAR! 😠

  • I guess we've got the solution, give it to Trent 60 times a game 😒

That is also a good one! 😛

Your football ignorance knows no bounds. There is never a play that tells the QB that he is to throw the ball 30 yards across the field for a 3 yard gain......doesn't work that way, nimrod! On any pass plays called the QB has at least three choices who to throw to, if he chooses to throw it 30 yards across the field that on him.

You really have reading comprehension, don't you. There are plays that call for that option...yes. But if the other guys are not open that 30 yard throw might be the only thing available.

My point is that he should be able to switch out of even having to choose that as an option...and instead choose the run up the middle with your stud RB.

What part of that did you not understand?

I don't think Shurmur will make it to the end of the season.

I used to get a kick out of when they showed camerashots of the dumb looks on Shurmurs face during games but today it just made me sick.

Today's loss sucked so bad because it started so good. It was like giving a starving guy a little taste then taking his food away. I was pumped up screaming and yelling and we were up 14-0 unfuckinbeliveable, then it goes to shit because of this idiot.

The one thing my roommate says every week is that he hates Shurmer's face. I would have to agree.

Then would you answer me this- you have a running back that's averaging 5 ypc, and take him out of the game on third and one? Even if you're planning on passing the F**King ball, the other team at least has to respect play action no? Shumur's football ignorance knows no bounds. And that's why he's gonna get fired. I forking damn guarantee it.

And if that isn't enough- let's not even bring up dumb ass clock management.

There was an article about us being the most predictable offense in the league.

    http://eye-on-football.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22475988/33107444

"Writing about the Browns offense leads me to a game I play every week at NFL Films. I sit in my office in Mt Laurel, N.J., put the Browns offense on my screen and call a friend who was a coach in the league, but is now in between successes. I tell my friend the personnel group, the formation, where the ball is located on the field and what hash mark and describe the motion -- if there is any -- and ask him to tell me the exact play that will be run," Lombardi writes.

"He is correct about 95 percent of the time. No lie. The Browns are so integrated into the West Coast system that their predictability is becoming legendary around the league."

The guy is about as predictable as a dead fish stinking after a couple of days.

  • Nice blurb from Lombardi.

As has been said. Shurmer is in way over his head. He won't be here next season.

Heck, he won't be here for the end of this season. The first big decision Haslam will have to make isn't if he is letting Shurmer go. That's a easy call. His big decision is weather he makes Jauron or Childress the interim coach.

It may very well be we already have our next head coach on the staff. If neither of those guys were coaching here, I would think both would be viable candidates.

That's why I would like to see Shurmer canned fairly early. I'd like to see whoever we give the nod have 6-7 games. I think we could see a turnaround of sorts as it is my opinion that coaching from the head position is hurting this team.

Ideally, our next coach is on the team. That way he knows the players, knows who can play and who can't. A new guy is going to want his guys.

As for the next coach, Haslam is going to want to make a splash. He is going to explore Cower behind the scenes and Cower is going to show no interest. My guess is Haslam is going to go all in for Nick Saban. Saban has Cleveland connections, having coached here in the past, and his SEC ties are going to lure Haslam.

  • The way jim haslam handles this mess upon officially taking over the team will tell us a lot about the man and what we can expect under his ownership...

I am generally not for firing HCs during the regular season except under certain circumstances, i thought crennel and mangini should have been fired mid season 2 seasons in a row each and i think haslam should waste no time putting his house in order because the sooner he starts cleaning house the better off and more organized the browns will be next year for it..

Shurmur as a playcalling coach imo ranks amongst the worst i have ever seen and he needs to be replaced as soon as possible..

I really hope haslam cleans up randy lerners accumulated do nothing mess from the top down and starts anew immediately..

  • Offense is predictable

    Defense is predictable

There is a reason each of these coordinators FAILED as a HC on other teams. You do't like the play calling? Coordinators feed the HC the plays and he either uses them or asks for a different one.

Please do NOT let any current Browns coaches become HC.

Scrap the West Coast offense. No winning team uses it anymore. Packers and Philly have changed it so much they are no longer a true WC offenses. It's too limiting. The game has changed since the WC offenses hayday.

I've been watching that dude on sports time ohio the last couple of nights and he's saying the same thing about Saban. It's an interesting thought. The guy has nothing left to prove in college. Jimmy Johnson is the only guy who has had success in both the NFL and in college, it would be an interesting legacy to create for himself if Saban could come here and turn this ship around.

  • No way anyone with a decent career or legacy is gonna come here and coach. Cleveland is a blackhole for coaches and qbs. Why take a chance of tarnishing your reputation and come to this giant mess? I highly doubt we'll get anyone with success as a head coach that will come here.

  • Money changes everything and apparently Mr. Haslam has plenty of money.

That was under Lerner. Now Haslam is going to be owner. It all changes.

Besides, the "greatest" coaches in history were guys that were either in their first gig somewhere or in their second gig where they didn't succeed before.

Shula: started in Baltimore, ended up winning in Miami

Belichick: we know all about him. Cleveland a failure, then success in NE

Gruden: no dice in Oakland. Title winner in Tampa

Dungy: no dice in Tampa, title in Indy.

This is why I think a Nick Saban could very well be on Haslam's radar.
