Haslem Reiterates His Desire For New Stadium!

If we build a dome, we would get things like:
NCAA Basketball Championships.
UFC Fight (although I suppose the Cav's home could do that)
New Bowl Game
High School Championships (assuming Columbus no longer wants them)
Olympics potential
Track and Field Championships
Concerts
But without a dome, you can't even TRY to lure these types of things.

Ok Thaak, you live in Minnesota. Care to tell me how many of those events that Dome up there has attracted to date?
PS, the ones in red you can still hold those in a non-domed facility. Concerts are warm weather, of course. Cleveland could make a push for some HS Championship games, Toledo played OSU in CBS not that long ago.
-
Why don't they just use the dome for concerts and all other events and no dome for football if it's retractable? And if a superbowl were ever in Cleveland they would use the roof for it.
seems to be the most fair solution, but I wonder if the current stadium can even support the weight of a retractable roof safely, that's up to the architects, but I really wouldn't want that damn thing to fall off as I'm pretty sure the current stadium was never designed with a dome or roof in mind.
-
why don't they have concerts at the stadium? i remember some of the best concerts ever played at the old muni. you are talking a LARGE venue. aren't there the smaller stadiums/theaters to house the smaller venues? what they can't play at gund arena or csu?
as far as anyone ever considering cleveland as the home of the olympics that thought is absurd. we already have the venue for ncaa tournaments and it's held in columbus @ osu. what's wrong with that?

This outfit has already said the stadium isn't designed to hold a roof....thus the geodesic concept. I don't think you could design that to open and close at will. It basically leans on itself for great strength. It doesn't work if you start removing parts.
As for leaving it open for football all year, even if they could, they wouldn't.
First, I think the league has rules on how teams can handle when roofs are open and aren't. I believe the refs and or NFL have control over that decision.
Second, I and the vast majority would be totally ticked to be sitting in the rain or brutal cold because some idiot decided to keep the roof open. Especially since you wouldn't come prepared for that.
It would be wonderful knowing the temp wasn't going above 73 or dropping below 60.
I doubt you let your house, while watching the game, hover at 90 or drop to 29 or lower for the 3 hours you watch.

I thought we were stupid not to put a dome on our home... Or at least a retractable one. I understand that playing football in the snow can be fun, but let's be honest, we won't see a Superbowl here, and we have all that real estate not being used during the off season because it has no roof. Really was a bad idea IMO. Think about it, some are willing to go see a bad team play in comfortable conditions. Some are not going to see a bad team play in crappy 10 degree weather. Something to think about.
another dumb response from a child. sure they could use the stadium for other events in the winter. but what events are that huge that come to cleveland as a venue?
put a roof on the stadium and you give up our home field advantage. packers have a dome? giants? patriots?

Who is being the child?
Home field advantage? I hope you are joking. I challenge you to name one team that we've had since 1999 that was dominant because we are an outdoor team? How about one player that was dominant because we are an outdoor team?
You are wondering about a huge event that would come to Cleveland? How about the Superbowl? They don't get much bigger than that.
-
This notion that we would lose our home field advantage because of a dome got me wondering. Are we a dominant team downtown in December (or January)?
Since 1999, we are 7-21 at the Stadium in December. Now that's one kick-ass cold weather team. Who has beat us? Probably a bunch of other cold weather teams. Right? Wrong. 4 of those losses were to Florida teams, 5 of those losses were to dome teams, and 2 were to the Chargers.

Roach, Don't put yourself in the ""we could host a Super Bowl if we had a Dome crowd", you're smarter than that. If you don't like freezing your ass off anymore in December, say so. Hosting a SB would be a one-in-a-lifetime event, and it sure as hell won't justify the cost of tossing a geodesic dome over the stadium. Let's get real for a second. How many MAJOR and I mean MAJOR conventions has Cleveland hosted lately? Like with 30,000 people involved. None? Hosting a SB will involve infrastructure for probably triple that. Cleveland doesn't have it. You'd be busing fans in from Akron, Columbus, Sandusky, or Youngstown.
I'm way closer to that Domed Nirvana Indianapolis than you are, and I can say with conviction- hosting the SB has changed Indy not one bit- and as I posted in this thread, outside of the Combine (which Cleveland would have zero chance of getting) most of the stuff Lucas Oil hosts is penny-ante. BTW, major cold weather concerts don't happen, as the BIG groups take the winter off so they can hit the MEGA-OUTDOOR venues in the summer.

Tell you what- my Bucket List involves seeing the Browns play in every stadium in the NFL. I'm about 1\3 of the way through. IMHO- what's the BIGGEST design flaw of CBS? Intentionally, when the New Stadium was built, it was supposed to have the "feel" of the old place. Compared to other NFL Stadiums I've been in, this created some incredibly narrow walkways behind the stands. Leaving a game, or going out to get a beer, you feel like a sardine in a can. It wouldn't cost Mega-millions to expand the lower and upper concourses 30'-50' (like the Club Level currently is) to give the peons some breathing room, and add on to the outside to move the bars and team shop there.

Hoorta, where have you been? i've been saying that i don't like to freeze my ass off in December for years.
i've also said that they won't put a lid on the Stadium because it simply isn't practical.
The fact is, we would get a Superbowl if we had a dome. Period. However, that's water under the bridge. As for economic development, you must have never visited Indy before they had the dome. i can appreciate the economic benefits that have resulted during their dome era. If you think that, for example, hosting the NCAA Final Four several times has not been an economic boost (plus a positive for their image and self esteem), then God bless ya. As for infrastructure, if Indy or Detroit can pull it off, then certainly Northeast Ohio can.

as ballpean stated attaching a dome to the existing structure is not an option.
the terminology would be a retractable canopy. a seperate structure with its own foundation would be neccesary to encapsulate the existing structure. imagine a gazebo with a retractable roof with CBS inside it!!
The taxpayers of Cle. get hosed again.

Fuck you. And I mean that in all jealousy. San Diego boy.
Don't be jealous..it's much nicer seeing the leaves change and having 4 seasons, etc etc.....wait a minute... fuck that..no it's not. I much prefer a climate where a cold day is in the low 60's so I can laugh my ass off at these goofy people out here wearing gloves and shit when it's 62 degrees. -
Sorry, but I don't see anything in the article even close to wanting a "new" stadium... a "renewed", spruced up and/ or enhanced CBS, yes, but a new stadium, no...
Having just been to my first CBS game (vs Bills), it looked pretty good to me... not like a 13 yo stadium at all.

Screw that. You are cheap.
I want 73-74, 24/7.
65-70 with a little chill in the air at night so i can break out my browns hoodie. but it has to be in the green with big trees and acres full of blue grass, corn fields and (cough, cough) anything else that might grow in that climate.
never been a beach person, although i love being ON the water. i know everyone says san d has the best climate but i loved the time i spent in colo. skiing or surfing. grizzly bear or sharks. personal choice i guess.

Yeah Roach, I have visited Indy from way back when. Having the Colts is a major thing, the Dome, not so much.
And we come from a different perspective of what "cold weather " is. I'm not quite as hardy as i used to be, so I know where you're coming from. But there's "cold" and then there's "cold". Don't want to make you feel bad, but once upon a time, I felt the need to check out my -20 sleeping bag at the local state park when it was -5. Remember the Bengals Chargers froze bowl? I was out skiing at Snowshoe in West Virginia. With a pre-paid pass, the actual air temperature was 29 below, and with the hurricane wind chill, that dipped it to -78. Now THAT is what I consider COLD.
