NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock has released his eagerly awaited top-five prospect lists for each position. The quarterback list reflects Mayock's sentiment that it's a confusing year for signal-callers. The major takeaway, however, is that the script has been flipped on the defensive stars at tackle, outside linebacker and insider linebacker.

    Mayock's prospect rankings

NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock has unveiled his initial position-by-position rankings of the 2013 NFL Draft prospects. See which players made the cut. More ...

Let's take a look at the noteworthy rankings:

    » Quarterback:

Regarded by most analysts as the only surefire first-round pick, Geno Smith is no surprise at the top. Mayock isn't willing to "pound the table" for the West Virginia star, but appreciates his arm, release, and athleticism. Matt Barkley is a mild surprise in the second spot, though Mayock believes he can make every throw. Syracuse's Ryan Nassib is viewed as a Andy Dalton-level talent.

    » Running back:

Alabama power back Eddie Lacy continues to pick up momentum on the heels of his dominant performances in the SEC title game and the BCS National Championship Game. He's emerging as the clear No. 1 back with a chance to go in the top 20 picks. Giovani Bernard's relatively low ranking implies a belief that explosive scat back out of North Carolina will be limited to a complementary role in the NFL. South Carolina's Marcus Lattimore remains the wild card at the No. 5 spot.

It's no surprise that Cordarrelle Patterson tops the list, as Mayock has stated that his jaw dropped when he put on the Tennessee film and saw the game-breaking wideout making plays all over the field.

    » Defensive tackle:

While Utah's Star Lotulelei has been the consensus top prospect, both Mayock and NFL.com's Bucky Brooks have him ranked second at the position. Mayock prefers the fast-rising Sharrif Floyd from Florida while Brooks likes Missouri's Sheldon Richardson.

    » Outside linebacker:

Mayock has called Oregon's Dion Jordan a potential "monster" at 6-foot-7 with the ability to play outside linebacker or defensive end. As we draw closer to the draft, we suspect other analysts will take Mayock's lead in ranking him above the more popular Jarvis Jones from Georgia.

any one watch this guy at all this year? seems intriguing to me.

    » Inside linebacker:

Mayock has acknowledged Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o's disappointing performance against Alabama in the national championship game, but he still believes his overall body of work merits a first-round selection. Georgia's Alec Ogletree likely is getting the edge due to his superior speed and athleticism, as he flies to the ball like a safety.

One QB who gets no pub and is a hell of a player is Matt Scott from Arizona. Arizona was supposed to win 2-3 games this year and instead they won 8. That guy is going to do something in the NFL.

  • Had no idea Chase Thomas of Stanford was only projected as a 3rd-4th round pick. This guy is the reason Stanford went into Eugene and beat Oregon this year. I don't know who does all this grading shit because Chase Thomas will be a good player in the league.

  • I think we couldn't go wrong taking Collin Klein in the seventh.

He's a big dumb monster and at the very least could be a viable TE.

Any GM who drafts that guy should be fired.

  • At this point my Big board for our #6 overall now looks like this:

    1. Dion Jordan - Ore

    2. Ezekiel Ansah - BYU

    3. Bjoern Werner - FSU

    4. Barkevious Mingo - LSU

    5. Damontre Moore - TA&M

    6. Jarvis Jones - UGA

Obviously they're all 3-4 OLBs b/c with all this talent we can't miss, and it is our biggest position of need. I've watched some film (via youtube) on all 6 of these guys, as well as checked out the combine stats. I'm hoping to get a look at the on-field drills to see how well these guys play standing up. Jordan and Jones are really the only 2 with a decent amount of coverage experience, the other 4 are pure pass-rushers so the drills are important.

Not a bad list, but Mingo won't go that high, and Moore only did ...12 reps on the bench press? That's not good.

Jones reportedly was okayed at the combine physically. He could be the pick. Who knows ?

Jones moves up to #1 on that list, if he PROVES to be healthy.

    I disagree.

Any GM who drafts him to play solely QB should be fired, but getting him late in the seventh round as a utility player could be beneficial. He's 6'6", runs a 4.7 40 and has played QB, WR, and TE at a major college program. His measurables compare to that of Jordan Cameron, and it's been reported that he is quite sure-handed.

His combine performance put him up to the sixth QB on many scouts boards, so it wouldn't be far fetched to see him taken and used in a Brad Smith-esque role with some team.

  • I really gotta say we're going to get a quality player at a position of need at the 6 pick and it's refreshing.

    Don't count your chickens.

  • Well in theory at least. There are at least 5 or 6 defensive lineman or linebackers that are highly rated prospects. We SHOULD get one at least.

  • Dion Jordan had a spectacular combine. Looking at his change of direction during the drills was excellent. Like I've said prior, put this guy opposite a rush backer(give Sheard a try) and he will be a jack of all trades. Probably a guy who can get seven sacks annually, plus play a great role in pass coverage.

I'm excited, Jordan for Pick Six...

  • I've become a big Jordan fan, too. Hope he lasts until 6.

  • Mingo tore it up in the drills. Not only ran a sub 4.6 40, did 38 reps on the bench press. He may not last until #6.

  • As it now looks like KC are trading with SF therefore leaving Geno Smith, anyone think we would be open to trading our 6 to a team in need of a QB if he's still available?

I'm not particularly for or against the idea or even have a team in mind, it's just there seems a long list of players that could upgrade us on the defensive side even if we traded down slightly.

  • Its happening just as I called it in december...Werner and Moore are dropping while Jordan and Mingo are rising...Id really like to know whay our docs think of Jones' spinal issue. My top 4 in order for our 6 pick- Jordan, Jones, Ansah, Mingo (I would understand if they took Mingo over Ansah though because Ansah doesnt fill a need)

I think its a definite possibility...especially with a bunch of QB needy teams picking right behind us.

  • Trade Down to gain a 2nd rd and possible future pick in 2014, Pick BPA Defense, add a QB in the 4th rd and a Guard somewhere in the draft. I have not honed in on any particular players yet.

  • I have two possible draft scenarios that I would absolutely love.

    #6- Jarvis Jones/Dion Jordan, OLB

    #68-David Amerson, CB

    #101- Gavin Escobar, TE

    then BPA to finish

I also wouldn't mind seeing us trade back with Buffalo or Tennessee and add a second round pick, then take Mingo or Jordan if they're still available and then take EJ Manuel with our second round pick.

Hopefully you are not forgetting the Browns needs in the secondary. Those are perhaps as dire as the need for OLBs. So do not dismiss the possibility that the Browns could go for Milliner at #6. If he is there I believe they will have to think long and hard about taking him.

Though, as noted at various times here, some of those needs may be addressed in FA with the Browns salary cap room.

I really hope and believe we are going to grab a #2 CB via free agency. Milliner looks pretty good but Id hate to pass on a top of the line pass rusher for a #2 CB when we already have a great #1.
