Should We Consider The Honey Badger?

The Browns Board

  • I am glad you posted this question. If the Browns do their research based on his play and determine that he is a first round talent with off the field issues then I would say absolutely take him if he is there in the third. If we don't you know the Bengals will and he will shut us down twice per year. I was sitting yesterday thinking about this very question and thinking that the Browns have had this problem for a long time. Every year you hear about teams taking players who's stock has dropped for various reasons and they end up with a steal. The Bengals got one last year with Burfict. When was the last time we actually took a gamble. We keep saying we need more playmakers. More top caliber athletic talent. This is how you get better talent. Taking educated risks gets you talent. The Ravens do it, the Bengals do it, Raiders do it poorly, lol.....But I believe we need to do more of this if we really want to reach the next level. I want 1st round athletic talent in the 3rd, 2nd round talent in the 4th etc.... if one of them pans out we have one star which we wouldn't likely have in the talent level of a third or fourth rounder. And if we hit on both wow!

Don't badger me about the 'Badger anymore. 5' 9", bulked up to impress the scouts (185). Ran a so-so 40 (4.5). At that height, he had better be able to jump out of the building, and he didn't 34" vertical. Wimpy 4 reps in the bench press.

Guys like AJ Green will out jump him by a foot, or shove him into the first row seats.

Looks like a player tailor made for the Bengals or Raiders- in the third round.

Some guys ... Honey badger, Te'o, Colt McCoy ... dominate at the college level because they are great football players, but just lack the God-given speed, size or strength to be elite NFL players.

Just like I can be a successful real estate Broker in Naples, FL, but I'd probably get chewed up on Manhattan. Everybody has their level.

Not saying these guys can't have a worthy career in the NFL ... but they won't be the stars they were in college.

from what i've heard the real estate magnets still have to service as drug dealers to their clientele (same as FLA) so you could do quite well.

i would absolutely take him in the 3rd if he's still there and we hadn't already addressed the position.

it is a gamble, all of it. but if you ain't in, you can't win it.

  • I would definately take a chance on him before I would take a chance on TEO. Maybe I am crazy but if you have a fake girlfriend that is way worse than smoking some weed. 😛

I don't get it. Some folks actually WANT this guy in the third round? I agree with you, I think he'll get burnt by speedy wideouts & it's "no contest" against the tall and/or physical WRs in the NFL. Oh, did I forget his character issues? I wouldn't touch this kid with a 10' pole. My personal opinion of him is MAJOR BUST, but we'll see. I'm certainly not a Pro GM, Scout, or Coach. Just another opinionated Fan.

  • I'm tired if staying away from athletic guys because they have character concerns. Not saying Mathieu is worth it, but ruling him out because of his off the field issues is stupid. Rule the guy out based on his performance.

OK Tim. The guy was great? @ LSU. Has average ups, and if his bench press is any indication, not particularly physical. In the NFL, he's going to be routinely matched up against guys who are 20 pounds heavier, and 4"-5" taller- are you telling me that shouldn't be a concern, character issues aside?

The last time we took a "gamble" was last year. No one wanted to touch Gordon, and a lot are wishing they would have I'm sure

No, those are definitely concerns. That's why I said rule him out based on his performance, not his character issues.

I said the same things earlier. I wouldn't want him if he had a squeaky clean record, just because he's undersized and not spectacularly fast.

I'm just tired of people saying "we only draft high character guys". That's all well and good, but character does not win you games. Everybody has mistakes and flaws, there's no true perfect prospect. If there was, he'd be going #1. You just have to weigh the pros versus the cons and, in most cases, physicality and talent outweigh most off-the-field concerns. Sometimes, yes, stellar players go on to never amount to anything because they can't keep their heads on straight.

Could you imagine how different our defense would have looked had we taken Burfict and Janorris Jenkins?

We gambled on Gordon last year, and look where that has led us. The guy is on track to be our best receiver in a long time, barring a setback.

Sometimes you have to take the risks, and we just haven't taken enough.

That should definitely be a concern, NFL WRs should tear him up based on what on he had shown

    Good Point!

  • Mathieu will probably be available with our pick at the top of the 5th round.. I'd take a shot on him then, but only then.

We will have the opportunity to draft either WR Wilson from WSU or Woods from USC with our 3rd-round pick

In the 4th I'd like to see them grab another DE/OLB

dude. this just shows me how out of touch you are right now with what's going on pre-draft.

mathieu will be gone before the 3rd.

    guaranteed.

    wtf is ironic about it?

this board would be dead without mundane off season gibberish, but you'll bash those who bleed brown and orange year long and those who disagree or in your oz-like mind are below you.

you (and others) always hate when people speak from their hearts. go back to where you were for all these glorious days tin man.

  • Pass, from what I've read he was able to take chances because he had great players at lsu to back him up. Plus when was the last time deion saunders said a guy was the real deal and turned out to be a average player.... anyone remember how much he pimped crabtree.

I never said not to take him because of character issues. Those are (IMHO) real, but I rule him out & so stated, because of what I see as performance shortcomings. He had pretty average showings at the combine & the WORST in lifting. He may not have been able to play last year, but he sure as hell could have (and should have!) worked out on his own. I'm just not a fan of a guy as small as he is not being outstanding in ANY other measured area. I DO rule him out based on what I see as a lack of ability to perform at a high level in the NFL coupled with his lack of maturity (again, as I see it). He will play against MUCH tougher competition at the next level. In the 1st 3 rounds, we need as close to "can't miss" guys as possible. He is NOT in that group. Simply too many question marks & flags for me.

And I agree. As i've said, I don't think he'll have any viable success in the NFL. He's too small, too weak, and not unremarkably fast.

But this practice of shying away from college guys because they've had experiences with drugs or alcohol has got to stop. It's ridiculous.

Talent is talent is talent is talent. You don't win games by having the most moral roster.

  • you could be thought of being clean -as -a-whistle coming in from the college ranks and become the biggest douchebag off the field once getting to the NFL but still be a stud on the field. ask lawrence taylor and michael irving just to name a few.
