That untrustworthiness plays into where he gets drafted. TONS of prospects fell in the draft because of character concerns. That plays into where you were drafted, it should play into what your contract looks like. I repeat, if they were scared that he might fail a drug test and miss playing time, they shouldn't have taken the risk and drafted him. The draft is a lottery, I don't get monetary protection everytime I go buy a mega millions ticket, why the fuck should the Cards get some because they over drafted a guy they were not comfortable with?

Why should they not ask for some if they deem it appropriate.

As noted: there is no rule, there is no law that says they HAVE to give this guy a guaranteed signing bonus just because they draft him. As the pirate said, it is more like guidelines...and they don't have to follow those guidelines if they don't choose to.

As for setting a precedent...the only precedent they set is that if anyone else drafts a risky player who has been suspended from his college team, has failed a dozen drug tests, and generally made a complete mess out of his life and career, then in that situation, you too, if you bear those traits, may have to sign an incentive based contract.

If he don't like it, then he too can join Tebow in Canada, or the Arena League or the new USFL.

Which he should if they decided to offer him that and they stuck to their guns. Don't want to pay the money, don't spend the draft pick. They deserve to lose the pick before low balling someone, regardless of what they did.

  • Clarett signed a four-year contract on July 28, 2005 with the Broncos in which he gave up $413,000 of guaranteed money in order to secure an incentive-laden deal. He was a 3rd rounder also, it can happen if they so choose to. However it will only hurt his stock in the future. It will end up being something like a 4 year deal and if he is clean for 2 he will get something like a bonus that year. Because if they do not pay up and he stays clean, he will be gonzo after 4 years.

If they play chicken with him I think I know who will blink.

Compare the salaries of the CFL/Arena/USFL. Annually probably what he would make in one week in the NFL.

Jenkins didn't blink last year, so why would he. Not to mention no team wants to waste their draft pick. The Cards are not going to risk letting their 3rd round pick walk for 500k worth of guarenteed money.

Then their idiots who not only drafted someone they were not comfotable with drafting, but also wasted a draft pick they could have used on someone who could contribute.

wrong. lived there for many years.

while meachem was getting impeached for calling black people pickaninnys bill bidwell sr. was calling up marge schott for sports biz advice.

bidwell will blink or they will become the next oakland raiders or for that matter the cleveland browns.

the biggest jokes in the nfl.

  • Objectively wrong. Exactly the same money is offered as his slot deserves. No part of the collective bargaining agreement requires guaranteed money - therefore Arizona doesn't have to offer it. Tyrann has zero leverage.

He can refuse to sign it if that's what he wants, but that's just another character blemish on his record. Arizona is well within its rights to make the contract 100% requiring him to stay clean.

He didn't fail just 10 tests.. he failed many more than 10. However, Tyrann stopped counting at 10.

I really don't understand what the point of his holdout is.. in the NFL, players only earn their contract money if they're on the roster each week. If Tyrann expected teams to accept his unfounded assertion that he's clean, he's entirely delusional. Rather than Arizona risking their pick for 500k, Tyrann is risking 2.5M of his contract for a bizarre assumption [unverified by anyone working for a team] that he deserves guaranteed money. No other team in the league would offer him a contract with guaranteed money.

Maybe they are the biggest jokes (they were with Bill....maybe not as much with son Mike)....but that also perhaps make them the dumbest...and most stubborn team.

So, yes, it is highly possible that they WILL sacrifice a 3rd round pick to make their point.....that is my point. The Cardinals may in fact have a little Lawrence of Arabia in them:

The trick is: if they lose a draft choice that they don't mind losing a draft choice.

  • No, his talent is there for where he was drafted, and then some.

It's his immaturity, and ten + ? failed drug tests that make him

unqualified for a guaranteed part of any contract. IOW's, he has talent,

but he isn't worth trusting to at least always be available on the field.

All those other players have nothing to worry about. His stupidassness makes him

a high risk player for contract guarantees. He was drafted on talent, not trustworthyness.

You have both, you get both a contract and guaranteed money. HB did it to himself, and now,

as usual, doesn't want to be held accountable for his own screwups. That means he should get

paid the usual money for his slot. It also means guaranteed money isn't going to happen.

Oh, okay, if I were them, I've give him a hundred bucks...in pennies upfront. @@

    Wrong.

You don't get to have your cake and eat it, too.

If you drafted him there, you pay him what a player in that spot deserves to be paid. Plain and simple. If you're not willing to do that, then you don't draft him.

You don't draft a guy higher than where he's projected and then try and pay him 7th round money.

Every factor goes into a players draft position, not just talent.

That's horseshit to both the player and the 31 other teams in the NFL that could have taken Mathieu later in the draft and paid him more than what Arizona is trying to pay him now.

I hope Mathieu never signs with the Cardinals and they lose that draft pick.

  • NO. We aren't talking the amount of the contract. We're talking about the stipulation that he doesn't rate guaranteed money.

He has proven himself to be irresponsible in the dope dept, and that's a huge understatement. So, he doesn't get the benefit

of being considered a safe bet that he won't make the team disgusted that the guaranteed money won't go up in smoke.

IOW's, despite his talent, he is a doper "flight risk". Like has already been said - the guarantee part is not required.

Do I think they drafted him too high, yeah. But that draft pick doesn't mean that "guaranteed" is part of his contract.

Yes, they already took the chance that they get nothing for their pick ...so, they won't really care, they

had more picks than just the one they used to take a chance on him.

  • man, it must be lonely on that farm. ever think of coming out of the 'barn' and seeing the real world?

drive your tractor to ny and i'll open your eyes up (wide) for just a day or two.

i'll make sure you get home ok.

Why on God's green earth would you think that going to NY is seeing "the real world" any more than seeing things on a farm?

Having been all over this nation from Chatanika to Coral Bay, from Lubec to Makaha I can tell you that both are just as real as the other.

  • Bad ASSumption, Mik. Only have had the farm for about 5 years.

But your reply is just an avoidance of saying you're wrong. Let's just see

    how it plays out....

  • Even though gaurenteed money isn't in the CBA, it is still expected, regardless of what kind of baggage the player brings with them. It litterally effects what other players get offer below that pick and it sets a president. Thats why when you see one player hold out of gaurenteed money, the 5 guys below his draft slot hold out until the first guys contract gets finished.

Can the Cards try to make him sign with nothing guarenteed. Yep. Should the Honey Badger sign that contract. No chance in hell.

  • When you step onto the football field of the NFL all it takes is one hit, one unlucky hit and your done. You could be paralyzed, crippled, or even killed. Look at what happened to D.J. Hayden, a freak accident; nearly died. If his contract has no guarenteed money, only incentive laden verbage, he going to have to take risks to try and make the plays he has to make to get paid. One bad play, one freak hit and the Cardnails could cut him and he gets nothing. You think that's fair... really?

    Right.

But, there hasn't been a pick taken where he was that didn't receive guaranteed money.

By doing this, they are setting a precedent that the owners are in absolute control and that players have no bargaining chips. Keep this up, and there will be yet another strike in a couple seasons.

This isn't just about Honey Badger. This is the owners finding yet another way around the CBA.

The "Non-guaranteed" aspect of NFL contracts have been in place for decades....the NFL has gone through many CBA negotiations....and they have never held out for guaranteed contracts

And I doubt hardly that they are going to use this guy as the example for their labor demands.

Hell....with a new CBA in effect for like another 8-10 years, this guys career will probably be over by the time the next CBA negotiations come up.

And...these owners are NOT finding a way around the CBA.....quite the opposite. They are implementing the CBA.

And maybe what precedent they set is that guys that get suspended from their school programs, that fail multiple drug tests before they are drafted.....must now play to get paid.

Again, remember, the bonuses that guys get up from are just so the agents can get a lump sum payment for negotiating an agreement.

The bonuses guys get up front are collateral. The NFL is the only league in which the salaries aren't guaranteed.

Mathieu can be cut for any number of reasons, not just his off the field problems, and then he sees no money.

What is really happening is the Cardinals doesn't want the 49ers to get him, so they panicked and drafted him way too early,

  • Every NFL contract is non-guaranteed, that's the nature of the business. Every dollar in the contract is only given if you're on the gameday roster.

He should be glad he's being offered a contract and not cut like these guys.

He's given a chance.. frankly, people defending Tyrann are not being fair to the NFL athletes who played by the rules in college. They don't have to like or even agree with the rules - but if a career in football is the goal, the path is defined to not include weed.
