Training Camp News, August 1 (It's August!)

NIce Post!!! Dont Think TRich is AP just yet, but I get the point

-
Seriously, I based my love of a given month based on what it means vis a vis football. So August is pretty important. Between Grossi, OBR, ABJ, etc., here's what I'm gathering...
1. Weeden has been really inconsistent but that doesn't mean "bad." He's just not the same improved QB on every play. I suppose that's to be expected but I have concerns that he is what he is... and the mental part of the game isn't his strong suit. He has amazing arm talent... kinda like Derek Anderson.
Grossi says the offense right now is "crisp like uncooked bacon." QB play is spotty.
2. However, it looks like we're going to field one of the NFL's better lines, all under contract for a long time after Mack is extended, and one of the top 5 RBs in the NFL. That's gotta count for something, even in a passing league. We should be able to run the football.
3. Speaking of RBs, I think the team REALLY loves Dion Lewis. Way more of a change of pace for T-Rich. Crazy quick, drawing comparisons to Eric Metcalf. Chorv could have fun with this kid and that doesn't bode well for Hardesty, dinged again. Too bad because I think a healthy Hardesty is a 4+, 1,000 yard back. He could start for New England. Well, or most good teams because they don't give a huge shit about running backs.
4. Shawn Lauvao is having a really nice camp, which is why there's no need to flip Greco to the right side. Pinkston gets time to round into playing shape. Faulk is expected to practice any day now before we find a way to stash him for next year. Gilkey's doing so-so. Point is, we're improved at guard and have strong depth there.
5. Now that defense... they're looking awesome. Chris Owens seems to be locking down the #2 CB spot in a bit of a surprise. He's just playing really, really well according to everybody. He was miscast as a slot and is a very legit #2 NFL cornerback. Could turn out to be a BRILLIANT piece of personnel work after passing on those 315 #2 corner types in free agency.
Also allows Skrine to play the slot which he does very well. McFadden has looked a bit rookie-ish, even in drills. Not having to start might be a great thing for him. He could be serious competition for Owens in 2014 and I expect we'll also add a corner with size.
6. Horton has some Teacher's Pets: Robertson has to be #1 because of the explosive speed, which reminds Horton of Daryl Washington. Expect to see him firing up the middle while other teams are concerned about our bevy of outside rushers. Horton talks more about Robertson than anybody else.
7. Tashaun Gipson was fitting into Horton's scheme really well before the tweak and concern about that position has waned... if Gipson stays healthy. I haven't heard a word about Slaughter and Bademosi needs work. Gipson's brief time off probably helps him.
But Horton seems to think Gipson is a legit starting FS with great instincts and athleticism. If we can field a healthy five-some of Haden, Ward, Gipson, Owens, and Skrine, we'll be strong there, allowing the best part of our team (front 7) to dominate.
8. So what is a team with the potential to run the ball really well, an attacking defense that rattles the pocket, and a shaky QB situation? The Vikings, basically. And that ain't enough. Weeden needs to pull his shit together or you're gonna see Brian Hoyer pass both guys at get the starting shot Lombardi thinks he deserves.
And then we draft T.J. Boyd!!

The Vikings made the playoffs last year and beat their #1 rivals at home. I would definitely take a playoff berth and a win vs the Ravens. I dislike the Ravens more than the Steelers so I would rather beat the Ratbirds.
I've been tracking 2014 Mock Drafts and the majority of them have us taking TJ Boyd, I haven't watched any tape on him but I guess he must be something good.
Well, I would take a DA circa 2007 clone....but not the DA of 2008 and beyond. So, we shall see.
Agreed. If Weeden can put up the same stats as DA to go along with T-Rich getting better and our defense with their ability to be top 10 then we have a legit shot for the playoffs.\
Do I think all this will happen this year? No, too soon. I see everything happening except the Weeden part. I've always been a believer that a QB should get 2-3 years in a system before a change is made. With Weeden though he has only this year, additionally if the Browns have a top 5 pick then it will be the end of the road for Weeden.
Something that we like to say in the military is "The only constant is change."

I think the only concern I have on defense is the height of the cb's. Then, I remember Minnifield, who did a nice job.
Well, when he wasn't getting penalties....those few? games never left me....
This team is going to shock the heck out of their opponents. I can see it.
I think Weeden will roll. But if he chokes and doesn't get it - he had every chance in the book of football life
with all the talent around him, real, clever coaches, and a system that helps them succeed.
Family Day at Browns practice will be great.
-
I think Weeden will be fine with lots of reps and the coaching....but most importantly a good reliable running game
Bademosi got lots of good praise from Dieken and Donovan....they sounded like they think he'll be the starter and he'll be a good one.
-
Just read a blurb about Gordon being the last player into drills, etc.
"Patellar tendonitis" ? Possible. I hope that's all it is. If not.... If he doesn't man up and become the player he can be,
it will be another bad character pick. Come on, Gordon, a lot of folks are counting on you.

Gordon practiced today so it must be really minor. He also apologized for his "attitude" early in camp and Little had a talk with him. That's right: Little, a mentor already. Gordon sounds pretty flaky.
David Nelson grabbed/rubbed his knee today. They said he was "fine," but he didn't practice anymore. Solid chance he just isn't ready to play football even though surgery was a full year ago. Team has to be fuming he didn't come to Cleveland to rehab.
Derek Anderson had one HALF of a good season, the first half. He really cooled down in the last half, ended with only an 82.6 PR. I have a shit memory but it was in the 70s in the second half, which is when I started thinking it was a mirage. As you know, the next year I was totally over him.
I love watching Weeds throw a football, which is what's so galling about him sometimes. His pocket presence seems horrible. He gets rattled. I, too, hope he's just getting comfortable in the offense. You know... the one custom built for him.
-
As for the Vikings: Adrian Peterson is THE running back of our generation, a legit marvel. How many Super Bowls has he been to? And for fairness, how many Super Bowls have Peterson, MJD, Steven Jackson, and Chris Johnson been to, combined? Toss in Fred Taylor and McFadden, the rare top 10 pick. Still zero.
I think in that time, the Pats, Colts, Giants, and Packers started like 50 different backs combined and my mom was one of them.
There was a run of like five Super Bowls without a thousand yard rusher before last year. And in five years, those 10 teams averaged 23rd in rushing. You can become a fringe playoff team (like the Vikings have been)... but that's it. The one year they seemed like a serious contender was Favre's big year, right?
But I like Ponder. I could see him moving up to the "good" category next year.

That bad game against Cinci which blew them a playoff spot with all his ints. was his Waterloo really

Good on Little... IMO it was Little's turn to motivate. Gordon seemed to motivate Little last year... by example if not by word. Once Gordon started to emerge as the dependable WR by mid-season, Little's drops grew less frequent.
Wheezy throws a pretty ball, but until he improves his reads and quickens his release, he will only be average. All last year he looked more like a pitcher complete with his little mini-wind-up. Hopefully the staff can beat the baseball out of him this camp. A slow release and staring down WR's is a bad, bad combo.

well if we don't blow the doors off this year and go 10 and 6 at least we are one or two players away from having a complete defense.
something i've been bitching about for years now.......complete the team on one side of the ball.....at least!!
imagine milner across from haden? ok. i still think the mingo pick was great and we'll have guys bum rushing QBs and knocking them on their ass. except for the good ones who know to get the ball out quick etc.
gotta get that #! CB or S next year and we are complete.......then we can talk about QBs and TEs etc. (i would say Gs but sounds to me like they are doing alright).

Wow... Haden has to cover possibly 3 of the top 5 best receivers in the game this year (Green, C.Johnson, Marshall... Fitzgerald and JuJones would round out my top 5). He's got a great opportunity to show off what he's got. He's always struggled against AJ Green, so hopefully we can get him some help in those Bengals game, and hopefully the pass rush helps. That's really going to be the difference maker, whether or not we can get consistent pressure on opposing QBs. The secondary just has to prevent the big play, and I think they'll be fine, despite any height concerns. It's all about disrupting routes and being in the right position. If these guys can press receivers and stay in good position long enough for the pass rush to get there, we will be good. Redzone is where height comes into play, that's where guys like Gipson and Bademosi can be used to man-up against a bigger WR. It's all about scheme, and I think Horton will prove he knows what he's doing with these guys.

Someone posted an article on here on how Chud and Norv are trying to get him away from patting the ball before he throws it. I would think that would help on his release. The guy with the quickest release ever was probably Marino. No patting the ball for him. It was just up at his ear level and whooosh, it was gone. Nice to think that BW3 could come close to that.

I do not think, overall that our DBs are really any shorter than most any other team in the league. Do you have info that says otherwise? Seattle is known for tall DBs, but they are the exception.

Tons!
Among the NFL's top 40 recievers, these ones played in the 80's:
Chris Carter 6'3
Tim Brown 6'0
Andre Reed 6'2
Art Monk 6'3
Irving Fryar 6'0
Steve Largent 5'11
Henry Ellard 5'11
James Loften 6'3
Charlie joiner 5'11
Michael irvin 6'2
Andre Rison 6'1
In our division: Stallworth 6'2, Collinsworth 6'5, Tim Smith (Oilers) 6'2
Other than the Smurfs (Washington), the Marx Brothers (Miami) and those little run-n-shoot guys on the Oilers, I think receivers were just as big, or bigger in the 80's.

I was asking "The Experts" about Weeden and they said he has been wildly inconsistent, great one play and horrible the next. If it continues for another 7-10 days, concern will set in and it might well become a competition. Which means Bridgewater, Mallett, or Boyd next year... or Lombardi earns the genius hat for saying Brian Hoyer will be a quality NFL starter.

Trent is a top 5 HB?

I don't know... I'm okay with a 2nd year QB looking "inconsistent" in a new offensive system one week into training camp... He should improve. I'd imagine Hoyer hasn't looked much better or he might have gotten a couple 1st team reps, but so far Weeden has gotten all of them...

Are you going too? We usually go up with the family every year and it's like a vacation to us. We are actually getting ready to head up there in a few hours. We're going to ride up tonight. What would be better to do with the kids, The Great Lakes Science Center or The Cleveland Zoo?.. Or is there a better option that you know of. We went to the Cleveland Aquarium last year before Family Night.

Trent is a top 5 HB?
Let's do some math... there was a 5 week stretch when TRich got 20+ carries and looked fairly healthy, week 8 - week 12, against nos. 4, 5, and 8 ranked YPA rush defenses...
In those 5 games, he gained 479 yds, 95.8 yds/gm, 3.8 YPA, 3 TDs on the ground, and 142 yds, 28.4 yds/gm, 7.1 YPC, 0 TDs through the air.
Average those out over a healthy 16 game season... 1,533 rushing yards, 454 receiving yards, 10 rushing TDs...
I'd say, if healthy, there is no doubt he is a top 5 RB in 2013...
