Will Brian Hoyer be in Cleveland next season?

The Browns Board

  • To my knowledge Lombardi is arguably the largest Hoyer fan of any GM. I would be shocked if he was released before next season.

Lombardi is also a big fan of Mallett. I wouldn't be stunned if we traded for him with our second 1st and didn't draft any QBs.

They should keep Hoyer. He is a great backup.

    this.

And drafting two offensive linemen in the first would be stupid as all hell.

just to ask your opinion and not to start shit......

who or what positions would you pick with our 2 first rounders?

  • Secondary help, and maybe a guard or an offensive weapon with the 2nd pick. Preferably an offensive weapon.

We obviously found out that Chud's offense works best through a QB that can make snap throws and quick decisions. Not only does our offense look more fluid, the line looks better when Hoyer was in there. Whoever our QB is next year will take pressure off our o-linemen and allow us to fill those holes in the 2nd and 3rd days of the draft.

If we need a QB, get Boyd - Bridgewater won't be there. If we are set on Hoyer (BIG IF), then grab a freaking offensive lineman (Matthews?) and get someone like Allen Robinson or Marquize Lee.

Funny. We could have four first rounders and a near first rounder. Really pile all that cap on the OL. Because everybody knows Peyton Manning's just a product of his 458 different OL over the past decade or so.

Yikes. We're gonna OL our way to greatness! And sure, draft another first round OLB to go with the four or so we have. Love it!

  • Hoys lost his composure on the run that may end up costing him his career. His top priority, and it really isn't a tough one, is to protect himself at all cost. Dude was gripping hard and forgot all about fundamentals with his half assed attempt at a slide. Coach Turner needs to take a large part of blame also. He did not prepare Hoyer properly and his fucked up incompetence will have significant short and long term implications...If he hasn't already been tuned up by Chuds, B and L he needs to be. I'd show the loser the door. Without accountability you have nothing.

ACL reconstruction is a heavy duty trauma to the body and psyche. Look how tough a time RG3 has had. The jury is still out on him. Hoyers market value took a major hit and there are going to be a lot of questions. Will he ever be the same guy he was before Thursday night? That's the million dollar question and odds are that he won't. I like the kid but he is facing a tough battle that most professional athletes don't win.

Really, this whole episode has troubled me. . Time for a Makers rocks.

This is spot on. I fear that slide may have cost him his career. He's been a career 3rd stringer and when he finally got his chance, the slide. Chances don't happen often in this league. The likelyhood of drafting a QB, his recovery, etc..all are factors. Regardless, I don't think he'll ever have the ceiling he had pre injury.

Agreed. In my mock draft, I have CLE picking Lee first. CLE keeps winning their way out of contention for the Top 5 QBs. Mettenberger and Carr should be available for them in the 2nd, though.

shep we know your dire need for the next new brightest star in the QB class. it happens every year for you right after 3 shit games from a rookie.

well how's eli manning look behind that scatterbrain OL of his or matty ice in atlanta? franchise QBs with no protection means turnovers and losses.

get back to me when you know i'm right.

How does Weeden look behind our line? We have one of the highest ADP's in the league for our linemen. There's no player on our line drafted later than the early third round. Two first rounders and a second rounder at the key positions. Top 15 in every aspect last season.

A scatterbrained QB behind a good offensive line means turnovers and losses.

It's not like our OL just played ten times better with Hoyer in.

  • No matter where/what we draft why would we let Hoyer go and keep Campbell? It's not Weeden or Hoyer....

No doubt ACL surgery is heavy duty- watch the YouTube on it, and you about want to puke. Saw somewhere a significant percentage of football players that have ACL repair are out of the league within two years- Montario Hardesty anyone?

However RGIIIs injury happened months later than Hoyer's- in the playoffs, and Griffin was hell bent on proving he could start this season- he may have rushed his return. Brian won't quite have the weight of three first round picks weighing on him to prove something to the world. When he's ready, he's ready. ACL rehab has gotten logarithmically better over the last few years, so there's no reason not to expect Hoyer to not be ready by the time training camp rolls around. Add in there's been a bunch of success stories- Jerry Rice and Tom Brady just kept right on rolling after their injuries.

Faith renewed. Try looking at the guys shuffled in and out of lineups in Green Bay or New England, see how many are high first round picks. Same is true for a lot of good quarterbacks and systems. It's really about the scheme and getting guys who fit it, then continuity and coaching. Not line "greatness."

  • But again... Hoyer is a lock. I just think the chances that they'll be in wagon hitching have become remote. He turns 29 next year and has three starts and is coming off major knee surgery. It's not a prescription for commitment and that's coming from someone who liked his game quite a lot.

Here's a name: Nick Foles. He's a legit NFL starter and keeps proving it. He'll never, ever fit Chip's vision (any other coach would've switched to him full time by now). He'll be pricey and popular... but you might be able to get him with the Colts' pick. And there, he might be the better choice than what would be left at 25-ish. Certainly no Bridgewater, Boyd, or Mariota there.

Our line has played very well the last couple games. Now that Lauvao is back and Pinkston will return soon, let's see what we have as the season progresses. It certainly isn't our biggest need. QB, RB, #2 CB, and another WR all trump it.

Foles looks ok but there is no way he is worth a 1st round pick. He was drafted in the 3rd round and hasn't shown anything to warrant a higher pick than that.. We also have Hoyer on a cheap 2 year contract so Hoyer will definitely be in Cleveland assuming he recovers fine from his knee injury.. I see QB and WR as top priorities with our draft picks. We will grab a RB in free agency.

  • I hope we pay very close attention through the off season to his recovery. If he is making a full recovery we should not trade up to get a QB. We should work on our o-line, add a db, wr and rb. A quarterback in the 3 or 4th round for project would be great. I am 100% convinced Hoyer can be a VERY good NFL starting QB.

I agree about Hoyer and I'm sure they will keep close tabs, but it's going to be tough to evaluate by April.

I'm afraid where we draft a QB is going to depend on Wheezy's showing.

    And I am very afraid...

True that it may have cost Hoyer his career, but only because of the timing of the injury because now we cannot be sure.

Don't agree with any of the rest of your comments:

    - I don't think hew lost his composure. I think he simply did not see Alonso coming. He was sliding to get down and avoid a hit by the DB closing in front of him. Alonso closed from his left rear. Regardless I haven't a clue how Norv could have better prepared him.

    - There's a huge difference between Hoyer and RG3.... RG's talent lays as much in his legs as his arm or head. With Hoyer it's predominantly in his head... and unless he suffered an undisclosed concussion, no worries there.

    @shep said:

Totally disagree, Erie. I think this team is a great quarterback from 10-6 today, right now.

Good trick seeing as how we've only played 5 games...

    (sorry, could not help myself...)

don't know how much faith I'd have in a teammate with a whole three starts under his belt "mentoring" me.

If Hoyer has the work ethic, that would be enough.... and if he is a Brady disciple, he has the work ethic.

bad decisions in drafting from the front office let that happen brother, not the fans. i would replace tha whole right side of our OL tomorrow if it were up to me.

yes of course you need a 'franchise' QB ala trent dilfer to win the superbowl. we all know that.

what was their prescription for that win.hmmmmmmmm. a running game, a GREAT defense and a offensive line which protected a dumbass who played not to lose. who were their receivers again? quick. no cheating.
