For regulars you may know that I have maintained a "Team of the Decade" thread for Pro Football for a few years now. That is based on a scoring system I devised whereby I gave a team 10 points for winning a championship, 6 points for losing a championship game, 3 points for losing a conference title game, and 1 point for making the playoffs in any given year.

I am going to apply the same system here. Bear with me as the changes in the playoff system that MLB has used over the years requires some adjustment in terms of applying my formula.

From 1903, the year of the first World Series, to 1968 there were ONLY 2 team competing in post season play, an AL champ an an NL champ. To be consistent, I gave the winner of the WS 10 points and the loser 6 points. Its just that no teams were awarded 3 or 1 points for that period.

After 1969 there were 4 teams in the playoffs, so 4 teams get points 10/6/3. After the playoffs expanded again in 1995 I then applied the 10/6/3/1 formula. So here are the points.....and the awarding of the mantle of "Team of the Decade" for MLB for every decade from the 1900s to now:

    1900s:

Cubs 6, 10, 10 ........ 26 points. The Cubs are the Team of the Decade for the 1900-1909 Decade

    Tigers 6,6,6 .............. 18 pts

    Pirates 6,10..............16 pts

    White Sox 10.........10 pts

    Giants 10.............10 pts

    Red Sox 10.........10 pts

    Athletics 6......6 pts

    1910s:

Red Sox 10,10,10, 10......40 points. The Red Sox are the Teams of the Decade for the 1910-1919 Decade

    As 10,10,10,6......36 points

    Giants 6,6,6,6.....24 pts.

    White Sox 10,6....16 pts.

    Cubs 6,6...........12 pts

    Braves 10..........10 pts

    Reds 10.............10 pts.

    Phillies 6...........6 pts

    Dodgers 6.........6 pts.

    1920s

Yankees 6,6,10,6,10,10.....48 points. The Yankees are the Team of the Decade for 1920-1929

    Giants 10,10, 6, 6.....32 pts.

    Senators 10, 6..........16 pts

    Pirates 10, 6.............16 pts

    Cardinals 10, 6.........16 pts

    Indians 10...............10 pts.

    As 10....................10 pts

    Senators 6.....................6 pts

    1940s

Yankees 10, 6, 10, 10, 10 ........46 points. The Yankees are the Team of the Decade for 1940-1949.

    Cardinals 10, 6, 10, 10..........36 pts

    Dodgers 6, 6, 6 ....................18 pts.

    Tigers 6, 10 ........................16 pts.

    Reds 10.............................10 pts

    Indians 10..........................10 pts

Browns 6...........................6 pts (St. Louis Browns nka Balt. Orioles)

    Cubs 6............................6 pts

    Red Sox 6.....................6 pts

    Braves 6........................6 pts.

    1950s

Yankees 10, 10, 10, 10 6, 10, 6, 10......72 pts. The Yankees are the Team of the Decade for 1950-1959 (by far the largest point total in a single decade)

    1960s

    Mets 10.........................10 pts

    Tigers 10......................10 pts

    Pirates 10....................10 pts

    Twins 6, 3...................9 pts

    Reds 6........................6 pts

    Giants 6......................6 pts

    Red Sox 6..................6 pts

    Braves 3 ..................3 pts

1969 is the first year of the League Championship Series where more than 2 teams made postseason.

I will treat each subsequent decade in a separate post hereafter, as it gets a bit more complex now.

      1970s

Reds 6,6,3,10,10,3.............38 points. The Reds are the Team of the Decade of the 1970s

      As 3, 10, 10, 10, 3............36 pts

      Pirates 3, 10, 3, 3, 3, 10...32 pts

      Orioles 10, 6, 3, 3, 6.....28 pts.

      Yankees 6, 10, 10.......26 pts.

      Dodgers 6, 6, 6..........18 pts

      Royals 3, 3, 3, ..........9 pts.

      Phillies 3, 3, 3...........9 pts

      Red Sox 6.............6 pts

      Mets 6..................6 pts.

      Twins 3........3 pts

      Giants 3......3 pts

      Tigers 3......3 pts

      Angels........3 pts.

The 1970s is the closest Team of the Decade Race in history, with only 2 points separating the first and second place team.

(Oddly, the same is true in football, the 70s was the closest race...Steelers/Cowboys only 2 pts apart)

        1980s

Dodgers 10, 3, 3, 10 ............26 points. The Dodgers are the Team of the Decade from 1980 to 1989

        Cardinals 10, 6, 6 ................22 pts.

        Royals 6, 1, 3, 6..................20 pts

        A's 3, 6, 10 ........................19 pts

        Phillies 10, 1, 6..................17 pts

        Tigers 10, 3 ......................13 pts

        Mets 10, 3........................13 pts

        Orioles 10........................10 pts

        Twins 10..........................10 pts

        Yankees 3, 6...................9 pts

        Red Sox 6, 3...................9 pts

        Giants 3, 6......................9 pts.

        Astros 3, 1, 6..................7 pts

        Brewers 1, 6..................7 pts

        Angels 3, 3...................6 pts

        Padres 6......................6 pts

        Cubs 3, 3.....................6 pts

        Blue Jays 3, 3.............6 pts

        White Sox 3 .............3 pts

        Braves 3 ...................3 pts

Expos 3 ...................3 pts (nka Washington Nationals)

Note, in 1981, due to a strike I believe MLB expanded the playoffs to include wildcard teams. After that they went back to just division winners playing. Not until 1995 did wildcards come back into play. That is why you see a few teams with 1 pt.

              2010s so far:

The lead for Team of the Decade is in the balance

Giants 10, 10...............20 pts so far

Cardinals 10, 3..........13 pts so far

              Rangers 6, 6.............12 pts

              Tigers 3,6,3..............12 pts

              Yankees 3, 1, 3........7 pts

              Phillies 3, 1..............4 pts

              Rays 1, 1, 1............3 pts

              Brewers 3..............3 pts

              Dodgers 3.............3 pts

              Reds 1, 1..............2 pts

              Bravess 1, 1,.........2 pts

              A's 1, 1.................2 pts

              Reds 1, 1............2 pts

              Twins 1................ 1 pts

              D-backs...............1 pt

              Nationals 1..........1 pt

              Indians 1..............1 pt.

              Pirates 1..............1 pt.

If the Cardinals win the World Series, they will take over the lead for Team of the Decade. If they don't win, the Giants maintain the lead by 1 point.

The Red Sox will get either 6 or 10 pts...but those will be their first points of the decade....and would give them at best 5th place

Just a note: this was the 4th meeting in the World Series between the Red Sox and Cardinals. Other 4 or more WS matchups in history:

                      Yankees/Dodgers 11 times

                      Yankees/Giants 7 times

                      Yankees/Cardinals 5 times

                      Yankees/Braves 4 times

                      As/Giants 4 times

                      Tigers/Cubs 4 times

                      and now Red Xos/Cards
