A Valid Question for Chud about the NE Game...
-
Dear Chud,
After our first TD putting us up 12 - 0...
Why go for two?
A lot of staff questions floating around here.... most of them unwarranted IMO.... but I think the above is a valid question that I have not seen asked as yet. It certainly was a topic at the time in the Tavern.
NFL HCs have been over thinking the use of the 2-point conversion since it was made an option. This was another example.
Hindsight is 20/20, but had we kicked the PAT, then we'd have had the chance of being screwed by the Refs some more in OT...
I'll give you a pass this time, Chud. Just don't do it again.

I agreed with Chud on that decision. Very easy to say that given the final score, that 1point would've been the difference, but at the time the decision made perfect sense. If they convert they are tied instead of behind if the pats get 2 TDs+PATs. There are like 3 or 4 things in that game that had even one of them gone in the Browns favor, they probably would've won.
-
If we had made one, then we would have had 27 points, so when New England scored their last TD they would've kicked the extra point and win 28-27, instead, they unsuccessfully went for two to try and get the lead to 3.
So ... It did not affect the outcome, assuming NE could kick an extra point.
I thought it was right decision at time ... Thought the play call (draw that never works behind line that can't run block) was baffling though. Although it might have helped to set up the last TD pass to Cameron, when they completely bit on the play action.

True.
I was pissed about how we lined up on NE's onside kick, leaving the middle wide open & undefended. We invited disaster, and got it.
I'm still happy about the effort the browns displayed, pissed we didn't win.

It was too early to go for two. don't chance leaving points on the table that early in the game.
-
I didn't mind the decision I HATED the play call though

You NEVER go for 2 until you have to, PERIOD. I don't give a flying fuck about "the book", it's just wrong. There was almost an entire football game left to play, with many possessions left. You always take the sure point until your hand is forced by time and or possessions. Those of you that were in The Tavern know how loudly I was screaming when Chud kept the offense on the field...............It was a bad coaching decision, period. Hopefully he learns from this, as well as his wasted last time out.
Game day managing is tough, regardless of the sport. I coach a high level 18u softball team and have made plenty of game day mistakes myself, but I don't make them twice.

Well ... That was dumb.

I guess his thought was to "get his guys together and get on the same page", but he had to know what was about to happen. We needed all of the time on the clock that we could get, and that one time out might have been the difference between a 57yd miss and a 49yd game winner.

"the book" should never be abandoned. of course, it's not 100% but it is supported by factual statistical probability

Sorry Burn, I coach by my own book, no one else's. Going for 2 in the 2nd qtr of a football game simply to make the score a nice, round 14 is a bad decision. At 12 you're already up two scores, which means 2 possessions. Had there of been 5 minutes left in the game, which would mean that the Pats *might* get 2 more possessions and score on their last one and go ahead of us with no time left for us to respond, then yea, take the risk and see if we can take it to 2 full TDs.........Not in the frickin' 2nd qtr.

What is Mike Lombardi opinion?

I haven't been more angry during a football game than I was right after NE scored 30 seconds after they called that time out. Yeah you're gonna stop NE when they have the ball at the 1, four downs and just effortlessly marched down the field twice in about 90 seconds (albeit with quite the bit of help). That timeout could've gotten us another play which could've given us the 3 yards so 'ol billy could've kicked the game winner instead of coming up short.
This game encompasses every aspect of the browns post '99 that makes me want to drink heavily. We play really well, we start slow but our D manages to keep us in the game, we go into half time without giving up multiple scores 5 mins prior, our offense seemingly scores the dagger touchdown late in the 4th quarter . . . But then . . . Our D goes soft, a miracle happens for the other team, the refs bend us over and go balls deep, our offense puts an impressive 30 second drive together to crush the opposition's great comeback . . . 1 play and 3 yards short . . . we lose like we have so many times before.
I don't think I'm gonna watch anymore NFL after the Bears come to town . . . Until Weedbellhanie gets hurt and they have to put tanney in . . . Or April whichever comes first. Speaking of April if our FO decides to pull the trigger on a high pick QB he better pan out or I'm gonna have to . . . . Oh yeah there's absolutely nothing I can do but hope they send a big lollipop with my season ticket package.

Too bad Chud didn't go to his clinic.

Seriously? Gordon and Cameron have blossomed with three different QBs throwing to them, one that is legally Retarded.
Gordon has 1400 yards in a vertical attack ... Murmur rarely threw the ball down field.

guess that all has changed since he went to the city of brotherly love and has a real QB and a real RB and a coach above him who chud wishes he could sniff the taint of.
