  • One thing I noticed? There hasnt been a complete bust year since 2010 and were about due lol.

  • Best 5 years:

1983, clearly with 3 HOFers in Elway/Kelly/Marino plus one other very productive QB in O'Brien

1948 the only other year in which 2 HOFers were taken in the first round: Tittle/Layne

2004 by the time they are done Manning/Rivers/Roethlisberger will have been some of the most productive QBs in history...not even counting their rings

1957 The duo of Len Dawson and John Brodie is one of the most productive in history

1971 Jim Plunkett, Dan Pastorini and Archie Manning is a very productive group

Honorable Mention: 1962 John Hadl and Roman Gabriel are perhaps the two QBs just on the outside looking in at the HOF

Worst 5 drafts: (note, for this, I am pretty much ignoring any year where either 0 or 1 QB was taken. I need at least 2 or more big time busts to come out of a draft):

1949 John Rauch and Stan Heath started a total of 3 career games between them and Bobby Thomason was way below average

1991 Dan McGwire and Todd Marinovich....not much more need be said. 13 career starts between them. Marinovich out of the league after only a year, McGwire after 3-4 years.

1959 Randy Duncan, Don Allard, and Lee Grosscup. Three first round picks, 6 total career starts.

2007 Jamarcus Russell and Brady Quinn. 11-34 in their career starts. Russell probably the biggest bust since the merger of 1970

1960 Geoge Izo and Richie Lucas, 10 career starts between them. (too bad because Izo is a Barberton guy)

Honorable mention: 2002 Carr, Harrington, Patrick Ramsey

Actually, the thing I notice is that lately there have generally been more QBs taken in the first round. Of course, there are more teams now to affect those numbers, still, I think the enhanced importance of the QB position in the game will lead more teams to gamble on QBs in the first round......and parenthetically, I think you could end up with a bigger group of "busts" in the first round at the qB slot.

I think that has happened with the likes of Ponder, Gabbert, Weeden and others.

But then you may also get more hits. The following were second rounders who today may have been upgraded to first rounders:

    Tobin Rote

    Milt Plum

    Neil Lomax #33

    Brett Favre #33

    Ken Stabler #52

    Ron Jawoski #37

    Boomer Esiason #38

    Randall Cunningham #37

    Jake Plummer #42

Of course, a fair share of second rounders who may have been upgraded were busts in their careers as well.

    .

  • Of course, the relevence of this thread is which list perhaps will the names likely on the 2014 list Join? The 1983/1948/2004 etc. list, or the 1949/2007/1959 etc. list......or be somewhere in between.

Where will the names Bortles/Bridgewater/Manziel/Carr fall? In one of those lists...or in between? And will one of those guys have The Cleveland Browns associated with them?

I don't think Bradford is a bust and Tebow did win a playoff game.

Now a complete bust year was 2007. Brady Quinn and Jamarcus Russell..................DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Carson Palmer initially earned at least first round status...if not #1 overall. Injuries got him....but he seem rejuvenated in Arizona this year. That team is 10-5.....and if it wins its home game vs. the 49ers it is in the playoffs, in large part due to Palmer.

So I would mark him up as well.

Don't think he has every won a playoff game and his QB rating is Cambellesque since his big injury, but if you throw him in, and add Tannehill, who I am sure some believe in, then you are 12/41 or 29% success rate.

Since we are 0-3 on this list, maybe we are due, so we can hit that 25% mark.
