from everything I have read, the Browns were interviewing McDaniels on Saturday. Which was the 4th. Are the Browns going to get in trouble for interviewing him 1 day early?

  • That would be a great start huh?

It wouldn't suprise me at all

  • What I don't understand is if Chud got fired for not cutting Weeds and/or Little why have they not been cut now that he is gone? Or is this part of the interview process for the new coach? Your first test as our new head coach is can you cut Weeds and/or Little! πŸ˜›

Great point. You figure they would be gone by now if they are willing to spend 10 mil go let go of a first year head coach because he wouldn't drop them.

  • They didn't make the decision. They allowed Chud to stick with his decision. Just as they allowed him to keep playing Bess and keep Cooper bottled up. Like they allowed him to not give Rainey any real looks....Tampa did and it paid off big for them.

We'll never know how much of that was on Chud, and how much of it was on Lombardi. Yeah, Rainey may have been a mistake- but he wasn't doing any better than what we had- look it up. πŸ™‚ And it is a good point- if the FO wanted Little and Weeden gone, why are they still on the team?

  • This all makes no sense. It would be up to Chud to Bench them ... to CUT them in the middle of the season involves contract and cap ramifications ... the front office would handle that end.

The original article I saw was that FO wanted Chud to cut Little and Luvey to send a message. I would think the correct story is they wanted him to BENCH them.

Sounds correct to me. The coach can bench players, but the FO is who cuts players. They did it all season with our practice squad guys

  • Bench them for who?

  • wouldn't Norv have some say who gets benched also?

didn't care to talk to the Browns. When Haslam hired loopybardi, I knew it was trouble.

But after the Chud firing... they may HAVE to go to the college

  • head coaches do not cut players unless you are playing in HS. the HC in high school is know-all-be-all. in college you have an athletic director you have to answer to. in the NFL you have the GM and Pres. to answer to, and maybe even the owner if he is hands on like a jerry jones.

There's a foul stench emanating from Berea these days, Smart NFL coaches are doing well to avoid it. If Lobotomy brings in McDaniels for a ton of money- it will probably be the last straw for this fan.

  • just apologize to rob ryan for the last regime's mistakes and bring him back as HC, a young masterful OC on the rise and someone ryan hand picked as DC running through him.

    very simple.

I am of the opinion that McDaniel might be fine. That he has learned a lot and has matured since his Denver days.

It is the GM that concerns me more mightily.

Give him 2% input in the draft, and tell him to STFU & not piss off his star players. Read his bio Gip- he's a POS without Tom Brady.

Fine article from Bud Shaw about the Browns FO hypocrisy. http://www.cleveland.com/budshaw/index.ssf/2014/01/cleveland_browns_coaching_sear.html.

You can say Belichick is a POS without Brady......and guess what: You might could say the same about Paul Brown without Otto Graham. Without Otto PB had this record with the Browns:

    5-7

    9-2-1

    9-3

    7-5

    8-3-1

    8-5-1

    7-6-1

In his 9-2-1 season his team lost to the Lions 59-17 in the NFL title game. In 1958 they tied with the Giants for the conference lead, but lost a playoff game to them. He didn't have another playoff appearance in his final 4 years with the Browns.

With the Bengals he made the playoffs 3 times....but never won a game. He was basically Marvin Lewis.

Hell....other than Joe Gibbs, name a Coach who could win titles with multiple QBs.

So, just because a coach fails in one spot doesn't mean he will fail in two. Hell, even Romeo Crennell got a second shot.

  • Jimmy so far has shown he is willing to do whatever HE thinks he needs to do to make the team better. He's aggressive and hates to lose as much as most of us do. He throws his hands at the field in disgust and even leaves shitty games early........All the stuff I do. I for one will take a hands on, aggressive owner all day, that doesn't give a shit what people think.

As for his legal problems, it sounds like they are doing everything they're supposed to do to make amends for their mistakes.

Wether it was Haslam or Dumb-tardi telling him to cut players- you let your HC make the decisions. Welcome to Snyderville- how's that working out in Washington?

Yes Jimmy- the rest of the NFL is laughing behind your back.

Snyderville? Damn, hoorta, even I was drawing the line at Jonestown...

Great question... and pretty damn funny to boot.

I find it hard to believe that we "missed the boat" on Rainey. Tampa had three different backs with 100 yard games this season, one back a 6th round pick and the other a UDFA. It's more likely that they have a great offensive line, which they do, and they have a runningback-friendly system, which they also do.

I'm also on the fence about the Bess situation. This is a guy that the FO traded for in the draft, claiming he's a guy they really wanted, then they want him benched halfway through the season. It seems like this FO is quick to realize their mistakes, which can be a good thing. But it also seems like they pull the trigger at the first sign of trouble, which can be a very bad thing.

I still believe Little can be a serviceable player in the right situation, even though he was statistically the worst WR this year. A guy his size, with his athleticism and experience at RB, can be hell on inside end arounds and short screens. That should be a guaranteed 5 yards every time.

    Agree 100%...

While I love his DC work, I have the feeling that Rex is not HC material... may not even be interested.

For all his DC success you don't hear his name mentioned much.

Good read. Pulled this from the article:

β€œFiring McDaniels 28 games into his tenure as the head coach is bad for both parties,” the critic wrote for NFL.com. β€œIt wasn't enough time for the team to be fully developed, or enough time for McDaniels to grow into the job.”

    The author? Mike Lombardi.

    Holy shit!

    McDaniels without Brady:

As HC: 11-17, 14th ranked offense, 20 PPG

Technically, McDaniels did get a second shot. He was OC of the Rams for a year after being HC in Denver.

As OC: 2-14, 31st ranked offense, 12 PPG

Then he goes back to New England and, voila, he's the OC of the #1 ranked offense only a year later.

Moral of the story: Get a fucking Good QB. Not Paul Brown/Bill Belichick/Tom Landry/etc. etc. can do without a good QB.....so why should McDaniel?

That doesn't mean he may not be a good HC....if given the right equipment.

PB: 5-7 his first year without Otto.

    Jimmy Johnson: 1-15 without Aikman

    Bill Walsh: 1-13 without Montana

    Noll: 1-13 without Bradshaw.

Should Chud have been given time? Sure, probably. Can McDaniel fuck up with a bad QB? Sure probably. Can he go places with a good QB? Sure, probably.
