COMMENTARY | The Washington Redskins should be paying very close attention to the Cleveland Browns as they search for a new offensive coordinator.

According to recent media reports, the Browns are talking with former Redskins' offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan about a potential job opportunity. If Shanahan ends up in Cleveland, it would make perfect sense for both franchises to get together and strike a deal involving quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Here's why Cousins joining forces with Shanahan in Cleveland would be an ideal fit for both the Redskins and the Browns.

Why the Redskins should be eager to reunite Cousins and Shanahan in Cleveland

The Browns are the ideal trade partner as the Redskins attempt to get the best possible draft pick compensation in exchange for their talented young backup quarterback.

Courtesy of the infamous Trent Richardson trade with the Indianapolis Colts, the Browns are armed with an additional first round selection in the 2014 NFL Draft. Although the Redskins chances of getting a first-rounder in exchange for Cousins are slim, perhaps the Browns could be willing to part ways with their lower first-round pick if they hire Kyle Shanahan as the team's next offensive coordinator.

Cousins' value to the Browns would be higher than any other team, due to the potential presence of the coordinator who's provided tutelage to the young quarterback from the beginning of his NFL career. So if there's one team that could deal a first for Cousins, it could be the Browns if they hire Shanahan.

Even if the Browns aren't willing to sacrifice a first in return for one of the game's hottest young quarterback prospects, they still own some other draft picks that could be appealing to the Redskins.

Cleveland's second-rounder is only one spot below the one that belong to the Redskins, so that pick could be enticing to Washington. The Browns also possess an additional third round draft pick that waspreviously owned by the Pittsburgh Steelers. With that pick in hand, maybe the Browns would be willing to deal their own third-rounder for Cousins.

The Redskins would be sitting pretty if they're able to acquire any of the previously mentioned picks from the Browns for the rights to Cousins. Hopefully, Shanahan goes to Cleveland so the potentially appeasing trade on paper can morph into reality.

Why the Browns would benefit from a Shanahan, Cousins package deal

By employing Mike Shanahan's son, the Browns would attain the services of a young coordinator who despite so-so results in Washington, still possesses the potential to become one of the league's better offensive strategists.

By trading for Cousins, the Browns would provide Shanahan with a player he's helped shape and mold into a quality signal caller. With talented playmakers Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron already on board, reeling in Cousins would give the Browns the makings of a potentially explosive offense.

Of course, if the Browns want to acquire a talented young quarterback, they could just simply select one with one of the draft picks they already have. Owners of the fourth overall selection in this year's NFL Draft, the Browns could easily end up with the likes of Johnny Manziel, Teddy Twatwater or Blake Bortles.

However, if Shanahan gets hired, the Browns could utilize the fourth overall pick to concentrate on a position other than quarterback in their attempt to improve their team. Meanwhile, they could use one of the other selections previously mentioned to land themselves a signal caller who already has a rapport with their new offensive coordinator, if they hire him.

Hopefully, Shanahan will land with the Browns, which would pave the way for an eventual trade involving Cousins and the Redskins in a move that would make sense for both organizations.

  • I'm not sure why we would go that route. We are looking for a franchise QB and we have enough draft picks to take a stab at one. There is nothing I have seen from Cousins that tells me he's going to be any better than Hoyer will be. Hoyer plus a pick seems to be the ticket to me.

  • We should take one look at RG3 busted leg and leave this Shanahan/Manziel idea well alone

This is what I'm thinking. Rumours of Shanahan, and the Texas A&M OC, it all looks set up that we're taking Johnny Football at number one and desperately trying to find someone with experience of running read option to coach him.

"Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

  • Cousins was a 4th round pick, and this drexel guy thinks we should

trade a first round pick to get him?

    Really.

Maybe a 4th rounder.... Maybe even a third, depending.

He sure did torch us when RG3 was out. That's the only time I've seen him play though

  • Cousins has a career passer rating of 69. Weeden's is 72.

  • I think cousins could be a starter, but at this point he hasn't showed he's anything more than a backup. I'd rather keep hoyer and get a late or undrafted third string (Maybe Guiton?)

  • If you look at QB stats from 2013 both Jason Campbell and Brandon Weeden were superior to Kirk Cousins. He started 5 games and the results were extremely sub par. TD 4 / INT 7 , QB rating 58.4, completion % 52.4

With stats like that he is a number 2 or 3 QB. That being said I would rather draft 2 QBs one high and one low as opposed to take this guy on.

  • Interesting, in college, Cousins was Hoyer's backup.

Several young qb's have had career days vs the Browns secondary.

Bingo!! I would be ok with taking Guiton later in the draft. Maybe he doesn't get drafted at all, and you sign him to a camp invite FA. The kid has skills.

  • Yeah, I'm not in love with this whole Cousins idea. It's going to cost something, and I feel like that something is probably going to be too much. If it's a pick, I think I'd rather have the chance at another BPA rookie.

I quit reading after he even considered our second first round pick.

The only thing that recommends Cousins here over Hoyer would be that, if Shanahan comes here, he "knows" Cousins.

The other thing is that this writer...who seems to be pro Redskins, seems to be advocating that the Redskins "Rip Off" the Browns....because the Browns have picks. The implication is that the Browns are stupid. Well Lombardi may be stupid indeed....but I would hope he is not so stupid as to trade a very high pick for Cousins.

To me, at most, he MAY be worth a 3rd round pick.

If the Browns wanted to show some interest I would offer a 6th rounder....and tell him he still has to compete with Hoyer and our first round QB.

Just curious, how do you see matchup up Shanahan and Manziel as "doing the same thing over and over again"? Just curious (If indeed that is what you meant).

It never crossed my mind that they were both from Michigan St. Nice catch.

    Who was the HC there?

    Einstein wasn't a psychologist.

  • I think we pretty much have Kirk Cousins already on our team ( a young smart QB we don't know much about) in Brian Hoyer...Keep Hoyer, draft a QB at #4

  • If this goes down and we trade for Cousins........give them Weedon, plus our last draft pic (#195)....that seems fair to me!! 🙂
