Browns #4 pick.. take it to the bank
-
I'm not sold on Watkins. I think the Browns, with Farmer as GM,
will draft based on criteria that includes character, leadership,
and team oriented work ethic.
Outside of desperate need, I don't know why anybody would draft a qb this year,
in the top five.
I still like Bortles. Luck and RGIII make this year's crop of
qb's look like level II players.
The #4 pick for the Browns MUST be a *definate* dynamic difference maker for the Browns,
for years.
There just seems to be questions on all the qb's...so.... the top 4?
star quality players are two olinemen, whoever else anybody wants to put
up there... but it really isn't qb. For the most part, it's Watkins
to the right team...except it's a deep draft in wr's.
Having said that... I think I could draft Bortles at 4 out of need,
and the promise of him being the guy eventually. I don't see the fire
out of Bridgewater, to know he's the guy at 4.

People would riot if they drafted a tackle over a QB or pass rusher at that spot.
People would riot if they drafted a tackle over a QB or pass rusher at that spot.
People need to get over it then and let the professionals run the football team. If they pass on a QB at 4 it means in their professional opinion it was to much of a reach. If they pass on Watkins it likely means that while he is great he is not actually a top tier need based on already having Gordon.
Like everyone else I love to offer my commentary on who they should draft but at the end of the day we need to realize that 99% of us are fans basing it on what we read online. Beyond that in the 1% there are those basing it on what they see in game film etc. Maybe 10% of that 1% actually know what they are looking at and how hard it is to translate that from college to the NFL.
At the end of the day the last thing I want is an FO who makes their draft decisions based on what is popular with a fan base. I want them to do their job , suck up that pressure and make the best pick for our Brownies. I for one will not be pissed if they decide that pick is an OT. It may not be the sexy pick but most guys that played football at least recognize just how important a solid OL is.

Actually, my expert opinion is also based on laughing and arguing
with Canton Mike on the phone.
Farmer is the key - I respect him so highly, that whatever they do,
it will be the best thing to do.
I bet there will be big surprises. The draft party at the stadium
is a lot of fun - it was last year.
This year? I bet on it.

Okay. Don't take it to the bank.
But, the Browns will draft:
#4 - Jake Matthews, or Robinson, if Jake is gone already.
Why? Because the Browns need to upgrade RT, and move Swartz inside.
And, the Browns need somebody to also back up Joe Thomas.
God forbid Joe gets hurt, because the Browns chances of
having their offense work goes down the drain.
Joe has played with no backup. Adding Jake would solidy RT for years,
and give the Browns an option to flip Jake to LT if they
had to.
Any OT in this draft besides one of these two guys, won't be
what they need. They will have bookend tackles, an upgrade at ROG,
and Rob Rang? has Bridgewater falling to the Browns at 26, believe it or not.
That would leave the second round pick to be Kyle Fuller, cb, if he's there,
or some other cb.
I'll be at the draft party with Canton Mike, and it's going to be a crazy draft,
full of surprises.
Though, I'd love to add Beckham, or Landry, wrs, to the Browns roster in
the first round.

Yea, sure take that to the bank and you can get about 0.2% interest. Ergo, I will not be taking it to your bank.

lol exactly what I was thinking@mike-h said:

Dime a dozen fat asses and no one to score the points!!!!!!!!!!!!

Braylon Edwards come to mind? Winslow?
Still couldn't protect the qb a lot of the time?
Still couldn't run the ball?
I'm just saying, if the elite qb raises the level of play
around him, then the offensive line let's him
do his thing.
Or, your oline can get overmatched and beaten up, and
even a Peyton Manning throws 3 ints in a playoff game.
With two picks in the 3rd and 4th rounds, they'll draft
another olineman that can play OG, C. It won't be anybody
who could ever back up at RT and LT.
Yeah, Rich and I argued over the oline a little bit....
maybe he'll visit after the draft....
-
I wouldn't be against that. That would be like putting money in the bank, providing security for a rainy day.
-
They can get a bookend tackle in the third.

Derek Carr with pick 4 ?

Are we trading Joe Thomas? Otherwise, hell no to spending the 4th pick in the draft on a RT. Only in Cleveland does a large portion of the fan base seem to think you need five first round draft picks on the OL. Seattle had a practice squad pickup, and a 6th rounder starting last year.
Schwartz is a young player that improved as the year went on, especially after he didn't have to play next to O'Neil Cousins. He is at minimum a servicable RT and there is good reason to think he can improve.

Agreed. A productive OL needs to function as a cohesive UNIT with all parts of that unit buying into the system. Individual "star power" doesn't necessarily guarantee teamwork.

We need to STOP using 1st round picks on the offensive line. It makes sense to use a top half 1st round pick on a LT IF you need one, which we don't, and it makes sense to get a talented guy who plays any of the other 4 position areas in the back half of the first if said player falls to you, but at the moment we have 2 1st round picks and a 2nd round pick tied up in our offensive line... and it hasn't done shit for our team. Teams that are good use their first rounders on skill players and then develop 2nd - UDFA linemen into starters. Last thing I want to see is to have top top 5 pick tackles on our team for the next 2-3 years. Now if someone good at tackle or guard falls to us at #26, then pick him up. That's just good value if you can get a top 16 talent in the back half of the 1st. But why 1: Spend the #4 pick on a RT who you hope will replace Thomas in 3 years when we need someone who can contribute now and 2: spend any pick on a RT with hopes to moving Schwartz to guard where he has never played. At LEAST draft someone who has played or is projected to play guard instead of taking a RT with hopes that your 3rd year player can switch positions. Call me crazy but I see us getting better play out of our line if we draft a guard and keep having Schwartz work where he has worked before than if we draft a tackle and make Schwartz learn a new position. We would essentially have two rookie starters on the oline.
-
My ideal scenario is to trade down and pick up a shut down corner opposite Haden ....then take QB like Carr if still there at 26 ...then 2nd round go WR and OG (extra pick via trade ) and then depending on what Mack does C and RB in the 3rd ....
Dennard or Gilbert
Carr
Benjamin or Bryant
Yankey or Gabe Jackson
Richburg or Swanson
Mason or Seastrunk
-
You don't draft a RT that early in the draft... unless you're the Jaguars. Do you want to be the Jaguars?
-
I agree that it's preferable to not draft a RT
so high.
But my point was, we don't have a guy to play at LT.
No backup there. I wouldn't want Swartz at LT, so...
you'd have to draft high to get a guy who could fill in
at LT if he ever had to.
This draft is nuts to figure out, far worse than other years.

Yup. We do need to pick up an OG- somewhere.

Very good, analytical piece on why drafting "elite" OL at the top of the draft is a mistake.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2019051-2014-nfl-draft-why-offensive-linemen-are-valued-high
Riddle was a former NFL player, and a heck of an analyst at B/R now. He interviewed Ted Sundquist, the former GM of the Broncos for this article.
Cal, it's nuts to spend the #4 overall on an insurance policy should Thomas get hurt, and stick him at RT. This draft is loaded with playmakers- guys who will have far more impact on the Browns W-L record than a RT ever would. I'd say it's 99.99% certain the Browns first pick will not be on o-line.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only time I can remember a team having a total stud OL- and have it work out was the Titans when they made their SB run.
