New Deal for Hoyer?

  • It's risky but I'd definitely wait if I were Hoyer. Barring totally shitting the bed out there the deal he'll get today will be there later in the season. There's more chance for him to earn more money than to lose it.

  • If Hoyer leads us late in to the playoffs, then Hoyer probably remains the starter. JFF continues to sit.

    Hey is this captain obvious?

    😉

Keep in mind that if he goes 0 and 3 he won't have the chance to lead the team deep into the playoffs.

3 and 0 , which hasn't been done here for a hell of a long time, he can write his own ticket.

If you were in his shoes do take that gamble?

Just responding to the obvious question with the obvious answer!

If I'm in his shoes, I don't sign a contract now - or if I do, it's for double money for an extra year. Make his $1m for 1 year deal, $2m per year for 2 years. If he sucks, he's still got a nice pay bump and then goes back to being a backup. If he wins, he's got a renewal coming up at the end of the season.

  • I think itll be somewhere in the range of 3 yr 10-12 mill. A substantial raise and some stability, not too much, not too little. Top backup money, but he'll sign because of the uncertainty of the situation.

Half guaranteed with possible mutual option in year 3 and that might do it... for now.

I like Hoyer's competitive spirit. Matches Johnny's exactly and will make for a great tandem for the Browns regardless of who starts the first game. You can bet that whichever one ends up second will not sit and cry in his beer, but continue efforts to prove staff they are wrong in selecting the other guy. They're two peas in a pod.

    A mutant pod maybe...

Agree both are competitive, but Hoyer's is tempered by his maturity. It's called "being a pro". No such counterbalancing force is discernable in JM's make-up as yet.

Plus weren't you one of those that pointed out that JM needs to start to keep him focused? That his redshirt frosh year has already showed he does not sit well?

  • All of you JF nuthuggers should read this for what it is....an indictment of jf's ability to start opening day, or even opening day 2015. My dream scenario when we drafted JF was for him to sit and study behind Hoyer for "at least" 2 years. It looks like the Browns have thankfully figured out this is the way to go.

  • as a player you are always one hit away from ending his career and if you haven't signed for the pot 'o gold before that time you'd be kicking yourself in the arse for the rest of your life (that is if you still have a leg to kick himself in the arse with).

getting hurt last year might throw a little push behind hoyer's decision.

and no, this isn't a post about gordon with terms like one hit, pot and arse (being josh himself).

Didn't the Browns pay Delhomme something like $3 million? I'd ask for a ton of performance incentives- and I'd bet the Browns would be more than happy to oblige.

  • Every time JFF is snapped drinking Moet out of Justin beiber's asshole, Brian sits at home rubbing out his contract figure and adding zeros to it. I bet he's telling JFF that he thinks he great and hell yes, go party, you're young have some life, whilst he phone's his agent tipping the paps off about where Johnnyis going for the weekend.

So two points there, JFF's antics have I am sure made Hoyer leverage his position and why not, he hasn't proved much be has proved more than Johnny and the Ginger Nutt we drafted before him. We should get Brian done, perhaps for a little more than we might have thanks to JFF but we'll get him done.

I have no idea what Delhomme made, but I doubt itll be incentive laced considering he may be a backup, a big chunk will be guaranteed as Tour mentioned.
  • We have not had a QB start 16 games since Couch, JFF will start a game sometime this season. If I were Hoyer I would sign now, play it out, then cash in when and if he loses his starting job to JFF. There will be plenty of suitors if he wants to continue being a starter elsewhere. Now I ask was his good play a product of Turners offense or a product of Hoyer becoming a quality starter in any offense? That question will be answered early I believe.

Did Delhomme's contract have to do anything with the veteran minimum? I don't know at all about that but that might have made a difference. Interesting about the incentive-based contract idea though, definitely hit or miss but could be good for Hoyer.

  • google is your friend...

In 2010 we paid Delhomme $7MM and Caroline chipped in another $12.7MM for $19.7MM total. I'm gonna guess the offer to Brian will be slightly less...

Talk about a golden parachute Tour. I had no idea it was that much.

Ok then, we can agree he is good and it wasn't just a product of the system, cause that is what I am hoping for.

  • I think Hoyer would be a complete idiot to sign any deal until we see how the season starts to play out. The only way I can imagine him signing would be a lot of incentive language increasing the money significantly if he ends up the starter for x amount of games etc. I am sure his agent agrees.

  • well right now the ball is in his court, literally. if he signs now, plays like shit or get's hurt again, at least he got the money. if he decides to wait plays like shit or get's hurt he's screwed. then there's the upside.

it's a risk. just wondering if he's got the balls to roll the dice. i'm hoping the guy plays at an all-star level and makes it through the year and then gets what he wants.

there have many that have taken that risk and failed and many that have won. i hope it's the latter.

If he signed a short-ish term contract for a couple of years, and then plays lights out and leads cleveland to the playoffs, there will be no shortage of teams willing to pay him the money after that contract expires. It's if he can wait a couple of years, having taken a reasonable pay bump this year or not.

    If I'm him, I sign.

Agree with the logic, but I would not sign today. Perhaps not even by opening day...
