The NFL and these bogus calls
-
All day they were letting them play . . . Until Luck needed a break. I full heartedly beleive the NFL takes it easy on the "stars".
I also really think the NFL is pissed that we didn't start Manziel from the get go, and we have to pay the price for them losing a media poster child. I beleive this for several reasons, and the officiating in the last 2 games which helped keep us out of the playoffs (not to excuse our own terrible offense) are a couple of them. People who completely dismiss the idea of the NFL pulling a few strings to prop up some teams/stars are naive. When you're talking about billions of dollars people will do whatever it takes to protect it.

Hate to say it- if Hoyer hadn't played like total shit- (32 qbr for those keeping score) the Browns win easily. Two deep passes to open receivers that weren't in the same area code. The int in the end zone was all on the refs. I suppose the bookies paid off Cundiff to miss that FG too. He makes that one, it wouldn't have mattered what the Cols did in the last 2 minutes of the game.
-
^ I agree, and like I said there's no excuse for the Weedenesque performances of Hoyer's . . . There's really no excuse for a terrible roughing call, or a PI call on something that they hadn't been calling all day either.
If Manziel shows some maturity (No more birds) on the field and we have a winning record after about 8 games next year the calls will miraculously be more in our favor. When I got home from the game ESPN showed the highlights of Luck's "amazing" comeback but they failed to show the questionable calls that helped him along the way . . . Now just imagine next year it's Manziel . . . The talking heads on that damn network would be exploding and the NFL bean counters drooling.

Brian Tuohy wrote a best seller called "The Fix Is In". After spending time in prison Tuohy wrote the book exposing how the NFL, NHL, NBA, NCAA, and all major sports are fixed by the powers that be. Just a penalty here, a flag there can determine millions of dollars in gambling. And last year when the Browns were beating the Patriots, at the end of the game they called a pass interference on the Browns. The call was bogus and put the Patriots in the red zone with less than a minute to go. We lost. After reading the book you will never watch sports the same again.

Have you ever read the fine print on the back of your ticket? Food for thought.

Just like TDs and critical 1st downs are automatically reviewed because of how important they are, so should penalty flags be reviewed during critical plays.
I can't recall Skrine's PI call exactly. This was the one where he put his hands on the hips of the WR and pushed up off him? It was very minimal touching and pushing, but he did it as shown in the slo-mo replay on the jumbotron.
On the flip side, Hawkins got raped from behind on a critical pass play and no PI at all.

Well, I've not read the book, but I've always had my suspicions about sports being fixed. Let's face it, sports is big business, and it is entertainment, so the fact that some of it can be scripted doesn't suprise me one damn bit. Also, the refs are always going to give teams like the Colts, Patriots and Steelers who are perennial winners the benefit of the doubt. Until the Browns start becoming perennial winners themselves, look for more of the same.

Did anyone else notice yesterday that not once but twice the ref said this when explaining two penalties that went against the Browns for defensive holding. This dumbass actually said, "Holding on the defense BEFORE the snap." I'm not making this shit up.
-
I would feel better if the NFL just came out and made this statement: We know people like seeing big stars and offense more than good defense. We are a business first and foremost, and because of this we've decided to make this game easier for the offense. Obviously we all know this to be true, but it's an embarrassment to the fans to hide behind bullcrap rhetoric on the matter. Kruger led with his head up and hit Luck in the chest. I knew the second Luck's head snapped back it was going to be a flag. I was watching the games with my brother and said "isn't it a shame that on EVERY big defensive play you can't be excited anymore until it's patently clear there's no flag?". That's what the NFL is now to me. I'd be willing to bet when it's all said and done the DB penalties and roughing the passer calls will 3-4 times higher this year. Think about that for a second.
I'm most interested to see how this plays out for the up and coming players. I'll tell you right now if I was a top high school guy who played offense and defense you'd bet your sweet ass I'd stay offense first.

The refs don't even understand the rules anymore. You can tell by how often they bumble their official explanations.
-
Helmet-to-Helmet on the qb is a penalty every time.
-
you have to fucking wonder at some of these calls....
The defensive pass interference on the final drive was HORSESHIT also
The defensive pass interference on the final drive was HORSESHIT also
That was the one that really pissed me off. Especially since the Colts got away with a few PI calls during the game.

PLEASE watch that and tell me where helmet to helmet was. I'll wait.
Edit: that's why this stuff needs a review process. If they are going to call it based on how it looks, they need to be able to review it.

The way it's going with these bullshit defensive penalties they may as well turn it into flag football! That call on Kruger was definitely a crock!

As he continued to drive forward after the initial contact, the crown of his helmet hits just under the blue horseshoe.

I can totally see myself watching a replay review checking to see if the defender actually grabbed the flag or if it just fell off while running. I'd almost prefer that to the "sorry but you sneezed too hard in the direction of the QB" roughing calls. The way it's going with these bullshit defensive penalties they may as well turn it into flag football! I love stooler fans . . . Being so fucking dumb makes it easy for me to laugh at you.

The hit on Luck by Kruger was a textbook "Heads Up" tackle that the NFL has adopted for youth football. Kruger led with both hands to Lucks chest and shoved him. When Lucks head was jolted forward from the impact there was daylight between their helmets but it "appeared" to be helmet to helmet. Had there actually been helmet contact Luck would have been knocked the fuck out !
GO BROWNS !

So what you are saying is, at any time during a tackle, if helmets touch its an automatic 15 yards. Got it.
Go home troll.

Honestly, any time someone comes unblocked toward a QB you can see the refs hand reach for the flag.
Remember last year when Grooves planted that bitch Stafford on a huge play and hit him the the chest with the "Heads Up" tackle. 15 yard penalty after Stafford rolled around on the ground like a commie soccer player.
Good thing the refs saved Stafford though. The Lions really draw in the crowds and are primed for a deep playoff run...
