The NFL and these bogus calls

I would feel better if the NFL just came out and made this statement: We know people like seeing big stars and offense more than good defense. We are a business first and foremost, and because of this we've decided to make this game easier for the offense. Obviously we all know this to be true, but it's an embarrassment to the fans to hide behind bullcrap rhetoric on the matter. Kruger led with his head up and hit Luck in the chest. I knew the second Luck's head snapped back it was going to be a flag. I was watching the games with my brother and said "isn't it a shame that on EVERY big defensive play you can't be excited anymore until it's patently clear there's no flag?". That's what the NFL is now to me. I'd be willing to bet when it's all said and done the DB penalties and roughing the passer calls will 3-4 times higher this year. Think about that for a second.

I'm most interested to see how this plays out for the up and coming players. I'll tell you right now if I was a top high school guy who played offense and defense you'd bet your sweet ass I'd stay offense first.

The way it's going with these bullshit defensive penalties they may as well turn it into flag football! That call on Kruger was definitely a crock!

I can totally see myself watching a replay review checking to see if the defender actually grabbed the flag or if it just fell off while running. I'd almost prefer that to the "sorry but you sneezed too hard in the direction of the QB" roughing calls.

I love stooler fans . . . Being so fucking dumb makes it easy for me to laugh at you.

  • The hit on Luck by Kruger was a textbook "Heads Up" tackle that the NFL has adopted for youth football. Kruger led with both hands to Lucks chest and shoved him. When Lucks head was jolted forward from the impact there was daylight between their helmets but it "appeared" to be helmet to helmet. Had there actually been helmet contact Luck would have been knocked the fuck out !

    GO BROWNS !

So what you are saying is, at any time during a tackle, if helmets touch its an automatic 15 yards. Got it.

    Go home troll.

    I'm not a Steelers fan.

  • Apparently the NFL says so . . . If it's a high profile QB

    Sarcasm doesn't translate well on the internet I suppose . . .

    I was referring to 6andcounting

  • Honestly, any time someone comes unblocked toward a QB you can see the refs hand reach for the flag.

Remember last year when Grooves planted that bitch Stafford on a huge play and hit him the the chest with the "Heads Up" tackle. 15 yard penalty after Stafford rolled around on the ground like a commie soccer player.

Good thing the refs saved Stafford though. The Lions really draw in the crowds and are primed for a deep playoff run...

    Yep, that's exactly it.

  • I hate the NFL now. Pussy ass flags all day. The game stops for replays every 2 minutes. Big names get every single break they can. Absolutely no flow to the game at all. It's like it's not even the same sport as it was in the 90's.

PLEASE watch that and tell me where helmet to helmet was. I'll wait.

Edit: that's why this stuff needs a review process. If they are going to call it based on how it looks, they need to be able to review it.

As he continued to drive forward after the initial contact, the crown of his helmet hits just under the blue horseshoe.

That is the way it looks two replay angles, but a 3rd, the close up from the best angle, low and behind Luck (a "Fox Sports" banner appears as the camera pans left) shows that at worst the helmets "touched".

Other than the fact that Krug's did dip his head down... yeah... "Heads up".

The program is about keeping the head up, not extending arms.

You should have been around in the 60's when you had to be a MAN to play football.

Heads up hands up. Anyone who has ever played real football knows it's physically impossible to play defense under todays rules and be a boss

You mean when they let you play defense? When there was no instant replay? When the refs were held accountable? When games were watchable?

This is a natural reaction to any frontal impact that cannot be avoided by simply throwing a flag. No "crown" of the helmet came into play.

The program is about keeping the head up, not extending arms.

There hasn't been enough evaluation of the heads up program (still in its infancy), but I would venture to say that kids may be trading concussions for broken necks. Both of which are tragic.

All the more impressive that our defense was boss like yesterday.

It's gotta be damn near impossible to play in the secondary under today's rules, but somehow we managed to lock it down yesterday (despite a couple late hold calls that were nonsense)

  • Officials were letting the DBs play yesterday, UNTIL the 4th qtr when Luck was losing. I'm serious, I couldn't believe it. 2 defensive holding and a PI on top of the helmet to helmet

First they outlawed the "clothesline" tackle and then the "spear" . Then the facemask was added to the helmet but you can't touch it.

And let's not forget the "horsecollar" and "targeting" the knees. Now we have instant replays , challenge flags 10 second runoffs . I say all this tongue in cheek but the game has changed drastically over time for better or for worse. One day they will add a forensic scientist to the officiating crew for paint transfer analysis to determine helmet to helmet contact . All the players will have attorneys on the sidelines to litagate unnecessary roughness penalties. And of course there will be appeals and games will last twenty-two hours. But hey we will stay up and watch them because we love football !

    GO BROWNS !

The annoncers said at one point during the game that this officiating crew throws the least amount of flags. And they were right ......until the 4th qtr.

Impossible? No... Harder? Yes, especially with allowances not made for the QBs and Receivers ducking their heads to "protect" themselves. But we're talking tackling technique here...

Anyone who has played "real football" has been told to "see what you hit". My coaches stressed this all the time for safety. Also happens to have the added benefit of improving tackling... shoulder tackling with the head in front, and the arms wrapping and pulling in. You know... old school shit. Produced fewer KOs... but a lot surer "tackles".

Pete Carroll even developed a program to reintroduce shoulder tackling using Rugby tackling as a model.

Sure... except that science has shown that neck trama induced paralysis is far more likely from compressive impacts caused by head-down, crown hits than head up hits which tend to cause the dreaded neck "sprains".

We've only known this for 30 years or so. You can ask Nick Buoniconti, if you do not believe me... Darryl Stingley unfortunately is not around to ask any longer.

"In a preseason game against the Oakland Raiders at Oakland Coliseum on August 12, 1978, Stingley was hit by Raiders defensive back Jack Tatum. As Stingley and Tatum collided, Stingley lowered his helmet, which made contact with Tatum's shoulder pad.[4] The hit compressed Stingley's spinal cord, breaking his fourth and fifth cervical vertebrae."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darryl_Stingley

There's video around of the hit, but I'll not post it. Seen it too many times as it is.

And Goodell gets his crown? We need a pic of him sitting on the Iron throne.

  • The only way this will stop is coaches being able to challenge the penalty and let the refs look at it, because if they would have they would see that Kruger pushed Luck in the pads and LUCK'S HELMET then made contact with Krugers. I know this will never happen but it would be nice. That penalty was a turnover at the worst point possible
