Brian Hoyer open to returning to the BrownsPosted 1 hour ago

Quarterback started in all 7 of Cleveland’s wins
Brian Hoyer
reached up on his tippy-toes to grab the name plate from the top of his locker.“Just in case,” Hoyer quipped.
That’s where the Cleveland Browns stand one day after the 2014 season. In March, Hoyer is set to hit a slim quarterback market in free agency where he will be one of the most coveted prizes. And both Connor Shaw
and Johnny Manziel
are in the infant stages of the career – each with too small of sample sizes to determine what kind of NFL quarterbacks they will be.Coach Mike Pettine confirmed the team will hold “lengthy discussions” about the quarterback position – and the entire state of the roster – in the coming weeks of January and February.
And everything is on the table.
"I want what's best for the Browns, and that's all going to be part of the evaluation,” Pettine said. “I think Brian did some really good things for us. I don't know where Brian is with Cleveland, and I'll be very interested to hear where we are from an organizational standpoint. Personally, I have a very good relationship with Brian. He was a big part of our success this year, but it's something that I just don't know if the circumstances can come together for him to be back here next year."
One thing nobody can take away from Hoyer is when the Browns were winning, he was under center.
Since his first start with the team in 2013, Hoyer amassed a 10-6 record and, through October, was one of the NFL’s highest-rated passers. But the Browns’ entire offense hit a snag in November, and Hoyer’s body of work includes 13 interceptions compared to just 12 touchdowns from this season.
Still, the fact that Hoyer has proven to not only manage the offense but also produce results was hard for some of his teammates to ignore.
“Brian is a great player and at times he’s shown he can win games,” linebacker Paul Kruger
said. “It’s tough to see guys have success and [take a step back] and now he’s in a different situation. Personally, I think he worked really hard this season and did some great things for us.”Said Hoyer: “It’s a great scenario here, but you have to be wanted back.”
Hoyer, much like the Browns, will have options to weigh. Several teams are in the market for a veteran signal-caller, including the Buffalo Bills, who saw Kyle Orton suddenly retire Monday. Hoyer will also consider how much his family enjoys living in Ohio, living out his childhood dream of quarterbacking the Browns but, most importantly, the opportunity to be the guy.
“Once you’ve played, you don’t want to sit on the bench,” Hoyer said.
Hoyer strongly dismissed any belief he couldn’t co-exist with Manziel.
“Someone said I won’t come back here if Johnny is here – that’s not true. There isn’t truth to that at all,” Hoyer said. “Going back to what I said in OTAs and training camp: Competition makes people better. That’s why I don’t use that as an excuse for why my play declined. It had nothing to do with that. I wasn’t thinking about if Johnny did this or that … My decision will be based on what I think is best for me and my family.”
Hoyer’s plans for the next month? Relax on the beach, talk to the people he needs to but, mostly, let his agent handle all of the business.
“It’s been a long year with ups and downs,” Hoyer said. “I’m done thinking about [my future] for a while.”

I hope he comes back. Gambling in the draft or on someone like Cutler gives me goddamn heartburn.

The basic fact is the Browns actually looked like a REAL football team with Hoyer. Although a real football team riddled with injuries and no depth, but a real football team none the less. Hell under Conner Shaw they looked like a real football team. Manziel not so much. Unfortunately the contract situation in Cleveland is going to be the deciding factor for who goes and who stays. That part really sucks.
-
I do hope Farmer extends a reasonable and modest contract. I simply could not trust this team being in the hands of Manziel as the #1 given recent events.

This makes me giddy, Die.
A backup QB - one who wants to stay in the league - is 'open' to returning. Usually, it is star quality players who say this. Hoyer just wants to tag along with collecting an NFL paycheck.
He could start in very few - if any - NFL cities. Call him a poor man's Matt Flynn.
-
I hope he does return. I don't have any confidence in Manziel and shudder to think of the Browns actually thinking he could be a starter next year. My advice for JM is check out the CFL. His college style of play might work well for him up north.
Hoyer has proved capable of being an NFL quarterback. For whatever reason he did not look good the last half of the season. I think it might have been the injury to all pro center Mack. The O line makes a huge difference. Hoyer back with an improved O line? I would like to see that.

You can call him a backup, but a Poor man's Matt Flynn?! You are insane..
-
I have no problem at all with resigning Hoyer. The line is the basic foundation of the team. You build the foundation first. Draft O and D linemen. If they used every pick they have in this years draft on linemen, Hoyer will do fine. And Crow and West will have stellar seasons. Those 2 running behind a stud line and Hoyer running the show sits just fine with me.

So what does that make JFF? A poor man's Eric Crouch?

I'd be willing to bet Houston says different douche bag. Just another JF fanboy favor who hooked their wagon to an ass.

Call him an excellent backup option John- I'm not suggesting offering him starter money and I thnk Brian is smart enough to realize that. However, if some GM is dumb enough to offer it, he'd be stupid not to take it.

Well put. Or Gino Torretta.

FYI- Chicopee is NOT a JFF fanboy.

Brother John I believe that's the first time I've heard you called douchebag....

Here's the thing...
Since most of the shit that we hear and repeat is speculation on its best day let's just say we don't know how BHS ego plays into this.
Is he looking for a place that he will be a guaranteed starter?
Is he (or more likely his agent) looking to sign for starter money and let the chips fall where they may?
Would he be happier as a backup in another city?
Are the couple of teams with lesser rated quarterbacks better overall teams in the Browns? If not he quite possibly won't be successful there either.
If he is, in fact, better than the other free agent quarterbacks what are those statistics? It seems that others have spent more time starting in the NFL.
I fear that the bottom line is that the Browns need a better quarterback than anyone on the roster at this moment.
That means that if the Johnny haters are correct and he is an abject failure then we will need a starting quarterback and Brian Hoyer will be a decent back up here.
I would imagine there would be at least some level of humiliation in that position.

He is neither a JFF fanboi or a douchebag.

Resigning Hoyer is the most stable prospect we have at the position right now. Sad but true. And I think he could've brought more wins to us if our o-line didn't suffer.
Unless they have a solid plan for going in a different direction next year, resign him with a contract deal that is appropriate.

Agree... Hoyer would be the best immediate option in Shanny's system, but will Shanny be here?
And then there's the whole:
Said Hoyer: “It’s a great scenario here, but you have to be wanted back.”
To say, "Hoyer just wants to tag along with collecting an NFL paycheck," is douche-baggery... whatever the fuck "tag along with" means.

Exactly.....I think thats what Ward said last year......
Hey, if the Browns "know" BH isn't the future, then I respect them for moving on. I get that he may be the best option right now, but if that option isn't good enough for the long term, then it's best to start working toward finding the right one.
Why waste time on players you dont think you can win it all with? Now is the time to get it sorted....

Good luck finding any QB available to the Browns in the next 6 months that you can "win it all with".
Sometimes you have to make due with what you've got.
