What receiver do we go after in draft/FA?
-
I fucking hope you're being sarcastic.
Not at all. Unfortunately if they don't significantly upgrade the QB position, which I don't think they will, it makes no sense signing a FA WR to a large contract where you could use that cap money elsewhere. I don't see Jeremy Maclin or Demarius Thomas at $80 million really putting the Browns in playoff contention.

But you feel it wise to bring in another WR with drug and personality issues?
It is a shame is career was derailed by knee injuries.
I wasn't aware Braylon caught the ball with his knees?

You know me tiamat63 I'm all about the contracts and cap space and with the rookie wage scale Beckham-Green would be cheap. If he is as advertised, stays straight, and Josh gets it straight, you could possibly have 2 #1 type WR in 2016 for a total cap hit of $3 million which is about a third of what a Jeremy Maclin will run you in free agency. If they both stink you look at WR in 2016 when hopefully you have an answer at QB.

I'd take paying Maclin because at least that kid is on the field. However a cap hit for a pair of receivers with questionable personal and professional choices scares me.
Also, the cap isn't the only thing to consider. If Beckham doesn't get his house in order and you take him at 19 - then you've wasted yet another 1st round pick.

Catching up here:
Braylon:
Physically gifted underachiever. Had one great year (coincidental with DA's only one) and 2 good ones.
Green-Beckham:
Will never see the 3rd round unless he tries to snort the 50 yard-line at the Combine.
Will never be worth the risk of a 1st round pick... even by a team inclined to spend 1sts on WRs, which is not us.
Macklin and other $$$ FA WRs:
Not going to happen. Strictly flying economy class at WR.
Re-up Austin. Shorts is a good fit. One personal fav I'd like to see added is Sanzenbacher.
TE:
Similar to replacing TJ with Whitner and DQ with Dansby, I'm looking for a solid signing here not named Cameron... up to and including a big splash in Thomas.

Although I think a few buckeyes are going to be good pros from this draft, a TE I wouldn't mind seeing drafted in Jeff Heuerman. He's one of those guys that does everything well (including blocking) and has the size you're looking for. He's more than likely gonna be there in the 4th or 5th round too.

I would love to see us go after Cecil.
And Sanzo is difficult to not appreciate, kid catches damn near everything thrown his way.
However we already have two good slot men in Hawk and Gabriel.

Unfortunately Funchess is a lot like Braylon Edwards. Not saying he can't be very good but we know what happens to WRs in Cleveland with the drops.
Braylon, in college, was much better than Funchess. Braylon was a dominant WR from the beginning at Michigan. He also holds the Browns record for TDs in a season and did have the record for yards until Gordon broke it. This idea that Braylon was some bust WR for the Browns is laughable. It is a shame is career was derailed by knee injuries.
Funchess has one season of WR under his belt. He is raw. He is basically a matchup nightmare with circus catch ability. He could work on his hands, no doubt, but he has a high ceiling. He also played this last season injured (and missed a few games) for an ankle injury. That didn't help his ability to move at all. That's without getting into the inconsistent QB play and shotty coaching.
I believe Funchess' stock will be heavily influenced by the combine. There isn't a ton of film on him. Even though he ended on a high note against OSU, he needs a strong combine performance. Come and and perform well in the drills, and run fast than expected, and he could be back in the first, instead of the early 2nd like he is now.

No, he was a bust. He had one good year. Sorry....but he was terrible except for that one year....and it wasn't injuries.....he just was NOT a reliable receiver. Besides, but sorry, if you are #3 overall and get injured....you are still a bust. The biggest broken thing about him was his brain.

I will say this though: it is not fair to compare Funchess to Braylon and predict that he too will be the kind of bust that Braylon was just because they went to the same school. I would have no problem with the Browns getting him in say the second round.

I am totally there on Heuerman. Good size and hands and faster than you'd think. I would not be surprised if he pumps up his value at the combine.
I never did get the story on why his PT was reduced this past season.
However we already have two good slot men in Hawk and Gabriel.
True, but setting up a 3-man slot rotation doesn't hurt. Assuming the Single-back is still featured (and IMO it should be) then both its 2TE/2WR and TE/3WR sets use up slots two at a time.

In regards to Heuerman, it doesn't help that Tom Herman forgets the TE is an eligible receiver.
I hope to god this team uses 21 personnel until they're sick of it. We don't have a fullback on roster worth his salt and both our young backs appear more comfortable without having a true lead in front of them. If that means bringing in another slot fringe 2 WR named Sanzenbachhhhhaaaaaa! along then I'd be happy to have him home.
edit: I'm watching the Iowa/Pittsburgh game from this recent season. Mark me down for wanting Carl Davis if we decide to go in a direction different than Shelton.
The interior Hawkeye Dline hardly moves backward an inch with him in there. Constantly doubled teamed and his reports from the Senior Bowl were glowing.

Yeah, while I can't complain about what Herman brought the Bucks a TE in that offense became a non-factor. He's a really solid blocker though so Tour I'm with ya if he shows some wheels and good hands at the combine he'll rise for sure.
I've been hearing some great things about Carl Davis too. I don't care where it comes from but we need to add some nasty to the interior D-Line early.

I've already voiced concern over having a $80 Maclin on a team with Johnny Manziel at the helm but I don't get the Cecil Shorts III idea. If he was any good why would Jacksonville let him walk? Looking to get Allen Hurns and Marquise Lee more reps? Shorts is another undersized guy who the lowly Jags don't want?

I'll take Maclin for $80.

Same reason why receivers go elsewhere and seem to contribute, teams think they have something better, younger and cheaper. Cecil does have some injury issue, but when healthy is a solid receiver that would provide an upgrade in this offense.

I'm a broken record but a "solid" receiver who will cost a decent amount in free agency. Since I'm always singing the money tune I'll tell you why, even if unsolicited. I think this team is a DE, DT and ILB away from being really good defensively, especially if they lock up Skrine, and you can find some real talent in FA. I really don't see this offense is close to being anything other than disappointing/mediocre. It they can add another solid OL and maybe find a "Hoyer" type QB they might be able to run the ball and dink and dunk enough to keep the team in the game.
-
Not at all. Unfortunately if they don't significantly upgrade the QB position, which I don't think they will, it makes no sense signing a FA WR to a large contract where you could use that cap money elsewhere. But you feel it wise to bring in another WR with drug and personality issues?

Always the chance he has learned the lessons Gordon hasn't yet. He is a big elite player. I just don't know if he will ever reach his potential if he continues being a knucklehead.

I am sure people will hang me for this, but I would like to see us go for Suh, throw lot's of cash at him, and then draft bpa for whats available QB,T,WR,LB.

I don't see Suh money for a DT in general, but definitely not given the timing.
If a great DT FA was the final piece, THE final piece in a major Super Bowl push, then sure. But that's not the case here and now...

Any thought on Scherff? I dismissed him based on his Indiana and Maryland games. Do I need to look at more tape?

Honestly, I had a totally forgotten about Schreff as for the most part I had fast forwarded to Iowa on defense.
As for the glimpse of the Iowa offense I saw... I have zero idea about him in pass pro. It seems like the Hawkeyes were always in 22 sets and running the ball. Nothing jumped off tape to me, I wasn't watching him intently - but when you're focusing on one player, 1st round talent jumps off the screen from time to time.
Admittedly that's your side of the ball and I defer to your judgement. I'm going to toss on their bowl game and come back with some thoughts.
-
I watched a good portion of the game against Tennessee. In regads to Schreff (referred to here-after as 'He') was lined up across from that awesome freshman the Vols have. Things I noticed -
1) His consistency is poor. There are times when he'll drive his man back, and other times he fires out of his stance too high to run block and gets out leveraged. Actually it probably happened more times than not.
2) His lateral quickness is average to below average. However when called upon to just chip the DE and get to the linebackers on a read, he'll get there in a hurry. Great straight line speed, but AFAIK, that's not what makes a quality NFL tackle.
3) Balance is an issue. I saw him get setup several times with a fake move to the inside, he'd then over-commit, and stumble backwards trying to recover to his outside shoulder. Again, he doesn't move his body well laterally.
4) Power. Sure, he's great at knocking around linebackers, but he doesn't seem to blow anyone off the ball. I suspect it may have something to do with frequently being out leveraged.
I could see him slide inside to guard and be successful if he learned to keep his hands up, stop bending at the waist and continue to develop leverage techniques. (This is why I love lineman that are former wrestlers) As a tackle at the NFL level, I have a strong feeling he'll be routinely exposed by any quality pass rusher that can give him a decent rip move.
edit: Let me clarify that offense is not my side of the ball. I've literally played defense my entire life outside of option back and some work as a slot receiver in midgets and highschool. So if you, Tour, or anyone disagrees with my assessment I have no issue admitting I might be wrong. Most of the extent of my knowledge on Olineman just come from reading defensive keys, that's about it.
-
I wouldn't be against signing Terrence Knighton or Dan Williams both are solid Interior DLine guys
