  • I'm glad to see the volume of regulars in here buffering anxieties over not signing any of the rock star FAs demanding top buck. We probably all had a guy or 2 we wanted. As much as the thought of a man named Suh intrigued me, does the dream salary give Miami the same inner chest that was chasing the dream? Daniel Snyder once thought he was getting the Albert Haynesworth playing the best football of his career, 100 million $ later he got a guy that complained about practicing 2 hours during a holiday with all best football in the rear view mirror. Speaking of Miami, they hoped they were getting the big play Mike Wallace Pittsburgh once had chasing the dream salary. They ended up with a guy happy there was no more need to chase that salary any more.

I'm glad to see this front office is a little better at identifying warriors in the trenches than the previous one. While our last front office thought Alex Mack was replaceable with dime a dozen talent - this front office took inventory of assets and you know the rest. Joel Bitonio was a home run in round 2. Meanwhile, I think the addition of Michael Bowie who played 3 different positions in 2013 for Seattle is great addition. If we haven't already re-signed Greco during his best football - you know we will. Defensively, John Hughes is a blue collar fave of mine. This guy can put on a clinic for 2 gap football, which is invaluable against the run and keeping offensive linemen off our backers. Even better, he can play over the tackle or kick inside where there isn't any drop off in his performance. His flexibility and attitude are exactly the kind of guys I like seeing our front office re-commit to moving forward.

While some worried about the new regime not keeping TJ Ward - our other Safety Tashaun Gipson found our new scheme and Ward's replacement user friendly enough for a Pro Bowl season. Meatball on spaghetti, Jim Leonard played pretty freakin good in his absence on behalf of that new scheme. Not only that, think about how much better Craig Robertson looked defending inside hook zones. He looked much improved vrs the run as well. Meanwhile, I read Paul Kruger said the new scheme in 2014 allowed him and others to play with better first step instinct than the complexities of the previous scheme allowed. Anyway, it looks like we will be re-signing guys like Robertson and Gipson. We've been longing for continuity here so it's nice to see our front office understanding what players and ideal scheme fits to keep in house. I don't mind losing Cameron as much as I would have a problem losing Gipson. We have enough cake for check mate in any auctions that maybe necessary for Gipson. It doesn't hurt that our HC played DI Safety in terms of how much he'll be up Farmer's ass and in his ear if the situation calls for it.

  • Did I mention how cool it is to have you back, Flugels? 😎

Thanks Cal! Really glad to be here talking football with you and the group again!

  • the fact that farmer played the same position as gipson did and how he brought in all that DB talent last year, one would hope that he has enough foresight to not let an asset like him walk.

whatever it takes with gipson IMO.

Worthy of note. Thanks Mik! We gotta keep this guy.

  • Add C Mack to the list. Could Opt out 2016. Restructure Now? Or is he a Cameron that just wants out? The Market is pretty much set..

  • What's happening with Gipson?

he's out looking for a bigger offer to bring home with him......could take a while.....these things often happen closer to the deadline, which I think is still 4- 6 weeks away

He's going to field offers from other teams, the Browns are going to find out how the league values him then he'll get tossed a nice contract.

From there? Go on to lead the NFL in interceptions and go to his second pro bowl.

  • Does anyone understand how compensatory draft picks work? With Sheard, Skrine, and Cam leaving in FA, shouldn't that eventually turn in to some reasonable draft picks?

yes....and it will.....right now they are projecting about 3 picks in the 3rd - 6th range....

there is no set formula....just a group of picks and a committee who decides.....but, based on past years and compared to the other teams, we are looking good....

  • We can get up to 4 picks. Its based on players lost in FA minus FAs acquired. Players who are cut do not count against it ala Hartline and McCown. Also, resigning your own players does not count.

So far, weve lost Sheard, Skrine, Cameron, and Hoyer and have not signed any FAs. Id say we'll get at least 3 and one of them will be a 3rd rounder. Unless we sign Clay, then we'd get less...

  • Damn you stick around this board enough you learn a whole lot about this league. Who needs a 10mill Goodell when you got a Mud and The News our Next GM's 😁 PS Tour, Your the Next OL Coach, Hang in There..

Then I think its fair to say we are about to get our deposit back. You could argue a case to resign all 3 of those guys, but to what extent? You have to give credit to Pettine/Farmer for recognizing the value of letting them walk and not replacing them through the market. Sheard was a solid guy, but when this team is healthy we dont need him at that price. Cam didn't want to be here, no matter what unless we overpaid. And Skrine, I don't think was ever in their long-term plans based off last years draft.

From what I understand the compensation is based mainly on salaries. Hell they could end up with a complete rebate considering they have used $0 to replace them. I think that is how you build from the draft right there gentlemen. They're keeping the right guys and not panicking in FA. Sheard was a 2nd, Cam a 4th, and Skrine a 5th (I think?) . If Farmer gets a 3rd, 4th, and 5th or better, then he is worth his weight.

  • The problem some don't realize is that compensatory picks cannot be traded.

  • Why hasn't Cleveland made a splash yet? They have the cap space! Bring in some talent why don't ya! Dont let Farmer roll the dice after the lemon of a draft he put out last year!

  • Excellent Post. Now if some of the members on here can learn from it.

No, but it gives you more freedom to trade some of your own picks to get better talent. The Ravens have been doing it for years. Getting the guys they covet rather than hoping they fall to them.

If you can trade some of your original 7 picks and get an extra 2nd and/or 3rd, you still have the compensatory picks in the later rounds...

What exactly am I whining about?

This whole we gotta build through the draft philosophy has really payed off for us in recent years right?

It does work when you have experienced GMs and coaching staffs making the calls, instead of these jokers..

But hey, maybe they will work out. Hopefully Haslam doesn't clean house if the Browns fail to win more than 6 this year
