With all the D-line depth, I see a few options...one is that we can add at least 1 toward our 54....plus, there's always the possibility of a deal being made....though I think it would have to be for a front line guy.....My pick is Desmond Bryant....he's healthy and played the whole year and is our highest paid defensive player(other than Haden).....so, he'd be worth something AND would free up some future $$ ....

as much as it sucks, economics are a huge part of things and, as much as I like Desmond, he is WAY overpaid....(imho)

That's not a bad idea about Des Bryant at all. 1 guy that comes to mind is Chicago's TE Martellus Bennett that McCown already found chemistry with. They're switching to a 3-4 so we not only have Bryant as bait but what about that Phil Taylor we never get a full season from? I still say the idea of him has always been far better than the reality. That's first round cake we can part with as a plan B option to your idea.

If I could add 8 guys to my previous list of 46, they would be:

    Ishy Kitchen

    Connor Shaw

    Armonty Bryant

    Ryan Seymour

    Jordan Poyer

    Travis Benjamin

Malcolm Johnson (the only 2 highlights I've seen are him lining up as a FB and catching the ball. Can he be another Marcel Reece?)

    Tank Carder

I tend to favor guys we've already invested time in while some of our late round picks/undrafted rookies can begin on the practice squad. Very happy about an active roster of 54.

all things being equal....me too.............Carder is a good example. Not so sure Pullard will beat him out, simply due to his lack of experience...

though, the GOOD part about new guys making the roster is that it typically indicates an upgrade.....so, to that end, I want as many new names as possible....

  • @mudfly said:

Looks like we're on the same page with most of these guys......of course, there are 8 more names that can be added to achieve the 54 man roster....whew!......

No matter what, there's gonna be a few good names going to other teams.....the good part is we have the depth to let these guys go.....the bad part is they will end up making some big plays elsewhere and then we'll have to hear about it everytime......

    HEY!!!.....why did we let "xyz guy" go???.....he made a great tackle....Farmer sucks......hahaha.....

    I'll say - thank God it's a 54 man roster!

We're always going to hear from the Doom and Gloomologists about how much better their hindsight 20/20 is than Farmer's foresight. Looking at how much he's improved the overall in his first 2 offseasons says all it has to on his behalf.

Since when is it a 54-man roster? It has always been 53... plus you can also have players who are suspended who don't count against the 53 (Gordon), the PUP list, IR-designated to return, or IR, also there are 10 practice squad spots (who are basically UFAs all season long and can be signed by any team at any time)... Just wondering if something changed to make it 54??

Really good idea on your part. That said, today should be just as easy to trade for him as it was on/before draft day. As hind sight 20/20 as this sounds, I liked us being scheduled for 10 picks and ending up with 12. I've had the guy in ff for 2 straight years; and I liked knowing McCown has some familiarity with him. I was hinting around that Chicago is a team we would have some good leverage with in the sense they're switching to a 3-4 with a defensive minded HC. Bryant offers them an experienced 5 technique while the idea of Phil Taylor offers a first round talent at Nose Tackle. They both have hefty contracts but their experience could have Chicago thinking plug and play.

These are Bennett's stats. In particular, the last 3 years showcase his best production so the iron is hot while we have the bait & cake:

Year Team G Rec Yds Avg Yds/G Lng TD 20+ 40+ 1st FUM

Not sure, I got the news from Mud. It wouldn't really surprise me though the way the league is willing to change things. Think about all the Pittsburgh Steelers that just had to retire with "Since when does the league test for HGH?"

Yep....not rated very high at all.....which can be cause for concern..(hence the "surprise" factor should he do well)...

I will say, if you look past the overall PFF score, you can see what the Browns see.....(I think).....

While Housler is rated pretty low as a blocker(Dray/Barnidge can do that) and only caught a few balls last year, you can clearly see he is a deeper threat and has one of the highest APC's in the league......meaning he hasn't caught a lot of balls, but the ones he did catch were longer and deeper than most TE's...

So, thinking the Browns plan to maximize THAT skill, whilst avoiding using him for run blocking and/or traditional TE duties

Effectively a deeper slot receiver, rather than an in-line TE? Taller, less shifty Hawkins/Gabriel?

This thread is what I love about this board. Lots of great info. As good as I believe Farmer and Pettine are at getting talent on this team I believe they will be just as good on their decisions about who stay with the club. I believe a big factor will be those who fit in with the philosophy of playing like a Brown.

Sometimes I make the mistake of also reading the OBR. They're still stuck on pause with who ordered the code red to draft Johnny Manziel; and it's impossible for Josh McCown to look anything remotely similar to the results he attained from the steady dose of 3rd and short situations he drastically outplayed Jay Cutler with. They debunk that with "oh yeah, what did he accomplish with the outstanding targets Tampa gave him?" Trying to explain a QB handcuffed by a 31st ranked running game is sentenced to a consistency of 3rd and long situations behind very suspect protections is like asking a drama queen to surrender her center stage. Waste of timesies...

The reality is a former State Champion QB like Pettine (before he became a DI Safety skilled at intercepting passers) understands the value enough to know we offer McCown more than Chicago did on the ground. That said, it's a very good thing that Pettine/Farmer knows McCown had a 109 passer rating with with a TD to INT ratio of 13:1 with only 2 fumbles when Chicago's line was almost as good as our's. Nobody's pretending he's been Joe Montana all along or that he needs to be him moving forward.

All that said, the last time we won 11 regular season games plus a playoff game - we looked to much maligned 6 year veteran QB coming to us from Tampa Bay. A very effective running game landed Leroy Hoard in the Pro Bowl. That's what running the ball down the esophagus of front 7s like Dallas, Philly and others can do for a RB. It also didn't suck that we had 2 John Deere Tractors named Orlando Brown and Tony (T-Bone) Jones mowing people over at OT while we had a first round talent at Center. All that almost made us forget entirely that all we needed from Testaverde was 16 TD passes to 18 INTs. Finally having a good running game made Testaverde go from forgettable to a playoff QB. A little further down the road when he could hand off to Curtis Martin in NY, he led a team to an AFC Championship Game out in Denver.

Since 1999, I've constantly bellyached that I wished this was an easier place to play QB. While the supply of football messiah QBs hasn't quite met our demand, this is the best plan/setup we've given a QB this side of 1999 (except for maybe 2007). I'm happier than a Steelhead rolling in Limburger cheese.

How did former Browns F/U Brandon Weeden look in Tony Romo's cockpit last year? You can take this with a grain of salt but looked good enough to make the announcers question the Brown's purging him instead of surrounding him.....

Erm, no, he didn't. See, things like this:

That's why Romo rushed back from his back injury - if weeden had been half-way respectable, Romo wouldn't have played against the Jags.

Designated seam threat and redzone big body...

Housler's raw, which is not an adjective you want still associated with a fifth-year player. But he has the advantage over Cam of being cheap so we can afford to take a shot on him breaking out...

Situations like when the offense has the ball? Once an ineligible player reports as eligible he remains eligible until he reports a change back or leaves the field. And since the advent of field mics on the Ref, the announcement is no longer very quiet.

I judge him more on his fit in this scheme + the philosophy of Flip + his supporting cast than I do how he historically fared in Arizona.

He's not going to be a primary receiving threat. He may only catch 1 pass per game. But he'll be used to stretch the deep middle of the field, either drawing a LB into coverage or causing a safety to eye the middle on 2-deep and cloud coverages. His effect will be more than what we see in his statlines, but I could see him having a 600-800 yard season and a handful of TD's if our run game holds true.

The ones who benefit most from a strong running game? Receivers.

I hope so........he seems to have some of the traits that Cameron had in terms of being a deeper faster more athletic threat...

I believe Flip uses a lot of 2TE sets, so I could see him trotted out there with Barnidge more often than not.

Effectively a deeper slot receiver, rather than an in-line TE? Taller, less shifty Hawkins/Gabriel?

In effect, that's exactly it...except he can also be used a tiiiiiny bit in the blocking game. A wildcard, if you will. While he's not the best blocking prospect BOB, he can chip and he can help seal. Some block and release, some flow routes on bootlegs, some deep middle pressure. Couple that with strong runners, a heavy playaction and the speed on the outside...he'll be the least of defenses worries.

  • yeah...and obviously the Browns like him and have a plan...Im optimistic....

Telfer is similar to Housler, I do believe. Sounds like a year on the IR and he'll be competing for that same role....so we seem to have a Plan A & Plan B going forward...🙂
