  • The contrast with 2014 is stark to say the least. It will be interesting to see if the work translates to the field...

And the cool thing is that August 13th is not that far away. I cannot recall an offseason that flew by as quickly as this one has/ is.

Well said Tour! Last year when we drafted Manziel, it wasn't long after Pettine was saying he didn't want to have to start a rookie QB. It was also around the time a compelling story surfaced about what Pettine did the day Hoyer got injured vrs Buffalo in 2013. He sent him a letter stating I just spent a week of preparation seeing how impressive you are on film. If I ever became a Head Coach - I would love to have a QB like you starting for me. Not sure this story ever went viral per say - but a friend emailed me the feel good story and class act Mike Pettine is.

The reason I'm backgrounding all that is I don't think Manziel really felt like 2014 was going to be any more than a redshirt year like he had at A&M when he first got there. Keep in mind, some undertones were how much Pettine values established leaders on this team like Joe Thomas and Alex Mack in terms of the continuity and leadership by example those guys wanted carrying over from our ONLY QB that won starts up against 2 former first round QBs back in 2013 (Campbell and the Pinball Wizard). Sure they announced there would be a competition but I think Pettine felt the logical way to do it was go with the vet.

Without being a fly on the wall, my guess is the owner got frustrated when Hoyer was no longer able to step into throws very consistently in the absence of Mack to the extent his arm wasn't strong enough to support the missing mechanics. The bootleg passes were working for a while until enough teams began waiting for the tendency. Consequently, Farmer gets an earful from Jimmy and then there's sideline texts "put Blutarsky in."

This year - it ain't gonna be Blutarsky we're putting in there if we gotta gong show the vet off the gridiron stage. It's Johnny Football. Brett Favre went through this too folks in college's alcohol related near death accident and again in Atlanta. If he stayed in the wrong situation, we would have never learned who he really was as a QB and leader. This ain't any different and we got a very trustworthy Mike Pettine behind the difference we will see just like GB had the right leadership and support groups in tact for Favre. When Favre was already acing the gig - Ty Detmer said he asked "what the F--- is a nickle package" just in case anybody is wondering what he learned in a season full of happy hours in Atlanta before the magic started. After rushing for over 3500 yards in his high school offense - he went to an offense very similar to a veer option at So Miss (which clearly wasn't advertising a conventional passer). Therefore, his right place at the right time never wanted to Dr Frankenstein his wiring into pocket passer QB everyone says you have to have).

If we choose to take what Manziel was good at in college - it needs to be from his A&M playbook. Cam Newton got a lot of his plays from Auburn like RGIII got a lot of his plays from Baylor in their first NFL playbook. I want to see the goodies that made Nick Saban fill his Popeye Pez dispensor full of Tums each freakin half, which was out of a pocket leaving in question on every play which side will he escape from under improvise. I'm thinking we don't have to make such drastic changes in our playbook if we change from McCown to Manziel though. That's just 1 fan's blowhard though.

    Danka...

The Pet letter's existence became well known around here. IIRC there was a video interview with Hoyer as well as a couple articles posted here.

I cannot help but wonder what would have happened had Pet handled last year's QB "competition" as he has this one's. Probably not world's of difference, but surely some... and for the better.

Totally with you on the choice of Favre for comparison... excepting arm strength and whether in the end a mini-Favre is a good thing.

On the former, it's not that JM's arm is weak.... it is not.... but it certainly is not the rocket Favre had and to the extent he was saved, his arm was his saving grace.

On the latter I just think ol' Brett is the "great", modern-day QBs I would least like my QB to emulate. Brett was the antithesis of the game managing QB Pet and any defensive-minded HC (or fan) would want. The number of Championships those choice Green Bay teams might have won under a more conservative "great" in place of Favre is staggering.

LOL! Just for the record my grandmother who died at 98 told me once that the years between 50 and 70 felt like 20 years, but the years between 70 and 90 felt like 2 years. Her conclusion. Time accelerates when you get past 70.

everything changes after 50. time accelerates and doing things that were easy to do physically before are tasking now. i resemble the commercials of ______ older man trying to play with their grandchildren only to grab his back or knee then they try and sell you on some type of pain medication which side effects include everything from bursting internal organs to dying with a 5 hour erection on the operating table. HA!!

I think it was 60. Two surgeons have told me I really need a new

knee. After cutting down 42 big trees along a creek, my knee is toast,

and I took two days off. " I may not be as good as I once was, but I am good

    once, as I ever was...."

Of course, two years ago, when Canton Mike and I went to the NFL draft party,

I could hardly walk into the place. But I can still work all day long....once or twice a week...........

  • lol... the recovery time is greater in all manner of things...

    And 60 is about right...

Tell me about it. I thought I pulled a hamstring eating Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream while I was watching aerobics on television. Those bastards better slap a warning label on the container about warming up and stretching before consuming their product. That clobbered me way more than any workout or the time I pic axed 2 drainage tunnels to the back of my property.

My body is starting to sound like an ad for Rice Krispies when I get up from an extended, seated position. This gettin old stuff is gettin old...

    Yup...

My right knee does an impression of a popcorn popper should I choose to stand on it while inserting left leg into pants...

... but it still beats the alternative.

  • i think at this point most of us 'prove it to me' JF guys are just letting it go. someone FINALLY told him to stay the F out of the spotlight and hit the books. only good will come from that. whether he can grow into a nfl qb is still unknown BUT now that he is 'chilled-out' and trying to make it, i'll give the kid my full support.

Well as long as it's just verbal and does not involve any heavy lifting anyway. 😛

last time i helped friends move their 'in'laws' were there and watching my friend and i wrap up a tv so it wouldn't get smashed up in the truck. she was yapping about how to do it right (meanwhile i worked weekends as a mover for over 20 frickin years) this and that, well anyways (quite on time) when i went down to pick this thing up a fart launched out of me quite unexpectedly, to which she put her coffee down and walked out of the room. her husband exclaimed to me that that was a great trick and he's gonna use it cuz it's the first time she's ever STFU about anything and left him alone in peace and quiet.

    high fives all around.
