  • Not to be bickersome but even though your commission percent is set the Commission salesmen might be happy enough to sell you a basic order of widgets while the enterprising fellow might try to boost that a few percent or entice you to buy a couple orders of specially made washers for those widgets.

I worked for a short time as a commission salesman any music shop.

One example there was that you didn't get any commission on accessories like pics or strings or guitar straps etc. Therefore nobody bothered to try to add those things on to a sale and strings, for example, are a relatively high profit sale as a percentage of cost. I personally didn't like the Commission system but some guys really hustled. They would keep a log book of every customer that they spoke to and about what. One reason for that is that customer came in during the salesman's day off he could show the manager it was his regular customer. I never bothered and never liked the hard sell so I'm assuming that guy was a better salesman than me.

Also it's becoming more and more prevalent over here that your meals are brought by food runners rather than your actual server. For what it's worth.

What music shop did you work? I frequent Sams on Mayfield a lot. Great selection.

So you would also eliminate all commission sales positions? Think that would work well? No more quarters for production either? No more bonuses?

Commission is not the same as tips. Our sales team doesn't secure its 5% commission on a $1m deal, then the buyer chucks in an extra $200k because the sales guy was super smiley.

I'd like to see that if nobody tips - which is largely out of the control of the waiter - the waiter still can afford to eat and stuff.

I'm not in sales directly, though I have done the odd demo. I work for a financial services/software company.

  • Umm duh.

  • Sounds fine. Jobs in manufacturing, research, development, engineering, etc

  • Ok some minimum wage employees might be able to eventually take jobs in manufacturing, development and engineering but let's get real. The majority of adult mcdonalds workers would not have been able to keep their shit together enough to successfully enter the actual work force.

  • Oh, no. I didn't mean they were moving from one to another. I was just saying some of those jobs were being created

  • What I'm getting at is that you're permanently putting those people out of one of their few suitable job opportunities.

  • Although I'd rather have my fast food prepared by a robot than by a low class person to be honest.

  • Natural evolution of things. I'm sure our country has had similar things happen in the past due to technology

We just need to make the education and training they need more easily available

  • A lot of them are just unfit and no amount of tech school will fix that.

Just because the education and training is available, doesn't mean people have the ability to use it and understand it. Or the want and desire to better themselves

Right, and we can't force them too.

But for those that want to, but can't afford it, we should give them easier access.

  • Keep in mind that 1 of the aimes of all the science technology etc is to come up with ways to produce without using much human labor. You don't need 10000 grunts in overalls to run Google.

If a monkey can do the job it's probably not going to be worth a lot of money. And if we are forced to pay a lot of money then technology will rightly replace that job.

I'd rather see more people skip college altogether unless they're planning to be a doctor or a lawyer or an engineer and apprentice in a trade instead. I would guess (yes its a guess woody brfore you start in with your usual semantic bickering) somewhere around 75% of college degrees are worthless and amount to little more than cash grabs for the school.

  • And by education I meant skilled trades too. The plant I'm at is going to have that issue in a few years. There is no young talent replacing the old guys. But you can make a nice living
