Still a better draft than 2012.

  • If he's getting scorched like he is... Stop rewarding the play by letting him play with the first team. IMO, the coaching staff isn't doing him any favors by letting him play. They are rewarding the draft pick and not the drafted player.

  • only way to get better is to practice. maybe this is the 'do or die' evaluation pettine and co. are putting him through? i mean they are still trying to figure out their depth charts.

also he's prob getting time with the ones because everyone else is not playing or suiting up for these preseason games.

Haden, Desir and K. Williams are not practising for various reasons - even if Gilbert is #5 on the depth chart, that still puts him as the starter today.

  • I think the good news in all this is that Pettine has consistently shown he's going to play the best players on the team. If Gilbert keeps it up at the rate he's going (and IMO he looked awful in the first preseason game) I know Pettine won't cave to having the 1st rounder in there. Thank goodness we have a lot of quality depth at the position, but at this point make him a KR and let the better guys on the team get reps.

uh, ok and what do you say the browns do about it?

    Duh..Put him on the bench.

These things snowball. Especially for the highly touted guys. Continually ragging on them ensures they're going to bust. That's my opinion. If fans just take a wait and see approach then you are more likely to see him succeed.

Ahhhh....but he was dumb enough to go and get himself drafted in the top 10.....thats his fault.....so now, he gets what he deserves.... 😉

Seriously tho......Your point rings true...because this "terrible" practice is strangely following on the heels of that game where he made a couple bad plays, then was roasted for a week because of it.....looks like his confidence took another serious hit this week.....

I dont see that at all.....if they were rewarding the draft pick, wouldnt he be starting?......how is sitting on the bench for a year a reward?

Bottom line, while he isnt doing well, he is still better than those behind him......

The only way to improve is reps....so, I say play him as much as possible during preseason.....nothing to lose and a lot to gain....

No, luckily we have Danny Shelton and Cam Erving. I mean, its not possible that the Browns could blow 7 consecutive first round picks, is it?

By the way.....Mingo is listed at third string OLB on the Ourlads depth chart....behind Scott Solomon and undrafted FA Mike Reilly.

Only because he's injured.......the injured players are listed last on that chart....Desir, Duke, Mingo, Bowe, Pryor, Winn, etc etc

    2014 Gilbert

    14 games | 2 starts | 1 INT | 8 Passes defensed | 25 Tackles | 2 Approximate Season Value

    2014 Williams

    13 games | 4 starts | 0 INT | 8 Passes defensed | 29 Tackles | 1 sack | 2 Approximate Season Value

How is he better than those behind him? Williams had nearly an identical season production-wise...and he didn't cost us a first round pick.

If Gilbert was better than those behind him, he'd be playing better than those behind him. But he's not.

And maybe, just maybe that is by design? Break him down before build him up?

It's clear from the "flawless" comment that there's a reality gap. No doubt the staff has been telling him for over a year how to close it, but he's not gotten the message. Perhaps that is because he actually believes he's doing well, that he's improving. The latter being the message he has been getting from teammates.

Maybe now the approach is to let him fail big time, fail completely in situations that do not hurt the team in a last-ditch effort to try to get thru to him. Maybe even make him ask for help.

It's an approach that can't hurt...

... and it seems to be working with a certain young QB.

Wouldnt surprise me......I know Pettine and Rexy scripted most of the practice.....sooooo, maybe Rex is filling a request from his buddy....

Because one is having a garbage preseason and the other isn't.

I like the thought of that and, if it is indeed the case, it would put Rex Ryan near the top of my list when it comes to great coaches and individuals.

  • When discussing the differences in seasons from corner back to corner back, its usually best to compare stats that highlight the talent differences.

Avg opposing QB completion %, YPC, YPRR would be a better fit than tackles and INT's.

Rex Ryan is quietly (figuratively) one of the best coaches in the NFL IMO. A little off topic but seriously consider the guy took Mark Sanchez to two AFC championships. Mark the butt fumbler Sanchez.
