    The TD Pass...

I originally thought it was a great read of a WR even with a DB ("If you're even, you're open") and a better throw to the outside that redirected a WR who was drifting towards the single-high Safety closing from the middle.

After further review I see a "WTF-an-INT-is-as-good-as-a-punt" throw on 3rd and 19. Crowmartie was tight to the line, but rather than press he almost immediately turned and ran two-yards in front of Benji matching him stride for stride for 10 yards. That's where he was as JM began his throw.

Crom was actually looking at JM as the throw began and slowed. Why? Don't know for sure... playing for the back shoulder? Expecting inside help? Forgot the down and distance? All? Regardless JM's shoulder angle said anything but "here come a hard low throw". What I do know is that there was no way to anticipate Crom slowing.

When Crom slowed, Benji broke to the inside making the outside the wrong side. Doesn't make it a bad play... it was 3rd and 19 after all... just does not make it the great play that I thought I saw originally.

It's incredible how many different ways one play can be looked at, depending on agenda.

Bill "qb guru" O'Brien just said starting Hoyer was mistake, FYI.

Funny enough when I watched that same play I saw a QB lock in on his first read, didn't look off the safety and pulled a Derek Anderson - one read wonder.

I saw the same thing Tour did. A QB that decided where he was going long before the ball was thrown. Lucky Crow was peaking, if not that's a pbu or int.

  • We all know there are many TV analysts that just hate Johnny - some for good reason, others, like dickbag Merrill Hoge, for who-knows-why.

Ron Jawarski has always been pretty critical. This morning on Mike n Mike, he said he liked what he saw, for the most part, from Johnny. This gave me some hope, and remembering it is his 4th NFL game, is refreshing to hear from someone who really knows the position.

If he just continues to improve, and gets rid of the huge mistake plays, there is hope.

Regardless of why - Hoge has been far more right than he's been wrong about Johnny.

  • Until the Browns play him a full season, the jury will stay out on whether he will be the QB for the Browns or not. He has two things to work on now the way I see it. #1 is ball security. And the other is the patience enough not to have to score every possession. The second for JM will be the hardest because he has had to score frequently his entire playing career. The best thing the Browns can do is fix this broken D. I did not like what I saw out there in game 1.

"An honest opinion many other people and analysts might share but we are not too sure Hoge should be the voice of reason on quarterbacks.

    1. Merril never played the position
    2. Merril believed Brian Brohm would be better than Aaron Rodgers"

It's not that I'm calling Hoge a great eye for talent at the QB position, he's be wrong before but at least he has owned that.

To date, there is little to indicated he'll be wrong about Manziel.

edit: Hoge wasn't wrong about Tebow either. How did Timmy fare after that defense carried his ass to the play offs

while asking him to make a play only here and there?

So the guy is 2 for 3, basically.

I agree but as long as McCown is the qb giving us the best chance to win we have to go with him. Regardless of the qb though the offense has to get their running backs gaining some yards and not depend on the qb's for a running game. Defense was a disappointment against the Jets and it will be interesting to see how they do this week. I'm betting we see much improvement.

  • Let's do it, Johnny.

Take the reigns and run with it, and bring some goddamn winning football to the lake again!

    Zombo

  • just don't fumble the reigns.

  • Seriously though, a big performance here, and there'll be question marks a plenty heading in to week 3.

  • And the JFF era begins.....

  • Did McCown not clear protocol?

  • Well at least this year we're polarized over his play on the field...

All I am saying is that my early, first viewing estimate of the improvement JM displayed in Game 1 was vastly over stated. I haven't given up hope, but I'd be lying if I said that the elbow development did not concern me. How can a developing QB develop if he has to be put on a pitch count? And JM still has a very long way to go...

What JM did well were the hot reads. I think he was 3 for 3 in finding the target left by the blitzing DB. He also froze the Safety on one occasion by looking directly at him before coming off to his primary, Hawk on 2nd and goal in what turned out to be our FG drive. Unfortunately he could not pull the trigger on a throw to the back pylon.

As for his elbow... the tape shows why it was likely sore as hell Monday. Mechanically he fell apart in the game. I saw two, only two, throws where he actually strode to his target: the Q3 strike in the half's first series to Hart on 3rd and 9, and an 8-yarder to Gabe on a slant in the 2nd play of our last possession. Otherwise he was flying open with shoulders and hips like... and I do not say this lightly... like bad Brian Hoyer. The difference being that JM has the arm strength to get away with poor mechanics more often than BH. However, in addition to the strain on his arm the poor feet hurt his accuracy.

I won't get into his "pocket presence" except to say that never in 2014 did I grade our O-line with straight "+" across the board on a play that ended in a strip sack.

Lastly, when JM's defenders start blaming our defense...

  • Johnny vs a Dick LeBeau defense doesn't inspire me with confidence. Hopefully our D can knock the S**t out of Mariota and give us short fields.

Must not have, as Pet pretty much said he would go with McCown if he could practice today.............

  • This offensive line had better be ready to see us run the ball 40+ times otherwise its going to be a slaughter.

  • Did McCown not clear protocol?

    Vegas had it right...

    Obviously not...

Josh McCown, who left last week’s season opener in the first quarter, remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol and will not practice this afternoon.
