Tradition aside, would you protest the NFL if they eliminated placekicking?

Our punter and our kicker are both bigger than our backup QB and could probaly take him in a street fight. I have no doubt, CoonDawg could.

Even if we accept all your premises as true, that's still an anomaly across this league.

You also have a guy that's taken sacks all his life, goes through practice with the team (instead of off to the side with a Camelback full of vodka), has to study a ton of film, and has a ton of skill. This in addition to the summer camps and individual training that he would have in common with Coons. Coons just overcomes some nerves and swings his leg. Occasionally on kickoffs he has to do it to one side. No comparison.

I don't think so. Probably a lotta other teams' kickers could whip our back up QB in a street fight.

  • I meant most couldn't beat up their own backup QB, but hey, never pass up an opportunity to bash a Brown.

Just saw a window for a joke. Not seriously bashing anyone.

All joking aside l'm cool with the placekicking aspect of the game. I guess l'm just used to it and l like anticipation of it all, and respect the skill involved.

And really, the point about how a small finesse guy can be the saviour of a group of gladiators has a certain irony to it. Irony is fun, right?

  • Field goals are worth three points, TDs are worth double. If you don't want to kick it to win the game then you should probably use those gargantuan linemen to actually score points. It's not just kickers that are small, look at Travis Benjamin out there, he's even smaller than the kicker... probably Gabe and Hawkins too. It's not the size of the dog in the fight...

  • It's up to the big gnarly athletes to get into range . . . We all saw how easy that was last week.

The only real problem I had with kicking in football was the fact it could decide OT, but I feel the new rules helped that problem.

  • What? And take away from all the kids in America to stop practicing kicking between the trees & over the Power lines. Come On Man!! We can't stop making kids Dreams. we take enough away 😁

who ever could kick it over our barn/boat shed won the day.

nfl is taking away too much as it is, now someone suggests this. fuck that noise.

  • Damn right Mik...Off the school bus, food, homework, get the gang & go Ballin & yes have your ass home when the street lights come on.. Get your America back America..

  • Why not eliminate the 6 points for a touchdown?

Just issue participation trophies, so nobody wins, and nobody loses.

Then trolls would have no reason to come here and stink up the board.

And, during the game, on every play not a touchdown, they could just line up,

and the captains of each team on offense...could just roll dice, and as long as they roll

a double, they get double participation points. But the team with more participation

points, would lose a turn until the other team catches up....

Well, that would make all the pansies happy.

Our country is just headed in a bad direction. Old school ROCKS - it's time tested,

blood sweat and tears tempered, a couple of centuries to build it.

Well, dropping the extra is just plain stupid.

  • A team winning because the other team's kicker missed a FG is much closer to participation trophy than a team actually having to win with their gladiators.

  • Fundamental part of the game. I enjoy the kicking aspect.

wouldnt change a thing....except maybe bring back the drop kick... πŸ˜‰

It is still a thing, isn't it? I know Fluties kicked one for the Pats IIRC a while ago.

Agree... a serious bash would have worked "the gf" into it somehow.

  • Is the game decided by the kicker or the QB and offense who have gone 60 yards down the field to get into range?

    It's of course the latter.

  • No, it's not easy, and they're wimps, so they shouldn't control the outcome of the game.

Yeah?.. Try calling Matt Bahr a wimp.. He was a kicker on the Browns back in the 80's.. this kicker would tackle people.. wimps My ass...

  • Something that I've thought about for extra points is to do like rugby - the conversion (worth two points, 5 for a try) is taken from as close to the goal line as you want, but it is in line with where the try is scored (or the touchdown is scored). So if you score down the middle, you get an easy chip shot, but if you score in the corner you maybe have a 45-yarder from a narrow angle.

  • One old man's opinion....

Do NOT take the foot out of football.

Also, in the thread title, you mention "Tradtion aside..." We need MORE tradition, not less.

Anecdotes are the enemy of real analysis.

No one talks to their friends about kickers for a reason. Their skill is purely fundamental. Why do we let these no-contact, non-athletes decide almost every game?

Said exactly this for years. You've got 100 absolute gladiators killing each other for 60 minutes and the game is decided by the scrawny virgin guy. Ridiculous.

Last chance TurtleMan. Do we ever want to see 300lbs. Lineman trying to kick it between the Pipes at end of Camp. NNNNOOOOOOO!! Game Over!! πŸ₯·
