could Joey Bosa start for the Browns tommorrow...
-
Joey has a lot of athletic ability as a pass rusher, he is not a great run stopper. He likes to have a good time off the field.
From the neck up he is well below avg.
If the Browns draft him he will likely be avg./pretty good, some other team, a likely pro-bowler a few times over.
He will never come close to JJ, but who in the H will...

I pretty much agree with this ^^^^^....
He's a real good looking player, but I dont see him anywhere near AJ Watt....and, right now, dont see #1 overall type of play either....

He's been coasting, tonight proves it. Can't blame the kid, he's got people telling him he's a top 5 pick and they won the title last year. This kid when he turns it on is completely unblockable 1v1. And not a good run stopper? What? Not only does he set the best edge for OSU, he reads the run and throws the guy blocking him right off and gets at least a hit on the runner if not making the tackle. If this is just cause he's been playing inferior talent, than why do none of the other OSU lineman look as good as him? Anyone esle notice everytime Barkely's bounced to the outside it's to the left away from Bosa?

These comments are surprising me. I know PFF has him as the highest graded DE in the country so far this year. Also, I have a friend that played for Ohio State for two years (transferred). He keeps up with them pretty closely, and says Bosa's been balling. He also played D End himself so I think he'd know. I'm curious what specifically y'all are seeing.

Yeah...what is the point? Our geniuses will pass on him in the draft, anyway. They are smarter than everyone else....remember?

Good post! Yes, I did notice they/Barkely ran away from Bosa. Keep in mind, Bosa took over the game vrs Penn State last year so if he had the same matchup this year - James Franklin was going to have that factored into last night's game plan. I also heard PSU has had trouble protecting their QB this year.
Those of us that were blown away by our first impressions of Bosa the previous 2 seasons, were expecting to see him dominate this year like he did last night. Here's the thing, when I see Ohio State playing a Fraternity or Sorority they should rathouse by 35 points - it's hard to get excited and pumped to watch something that shouldn't challenge them. Maybe 18-21 year old kids have that impacting their game faces too. We've witnessed some head scratch close scores from teams that didn't belong on the same field. Therefore, Bosa hasn't been the only one playing down to the level competition in fairness.
How about MissedAgain losing to Michigan State the way they did yesterday?

Look, Bosa could flame out in the NFL..nobody knows anything for sure. Courtney Brown was supposed to be the next Reggie White. That being said, when you see a college kid with what appears to be NFL ready speed and power PLUS NFL technique? I'm by no means saying that he'd be doing in the NFL right off the bat what he's doing now ( but he might look at Khalil Mack), but his technique at least is better than anybody on the Browns front 4. The way he slouches off blocks, it's so smooth and effortless looking. Like he doesn't need to tap into his strength reserves. But when he wants to, y'all see what he does with his Bull. He literally deposits OT's in the QB's jock.
The only caveat to drafting him is that we have to properly develop him. If we do as usual he might be marginally effective for a few years, we get rid of him and then he goes somewhere else to start his HOF career.

Highest graded DE against the run AND pass.
Watching him slide inside to a 3tech and destroy guards with his speed and hands on passing downs.
He reminds me of Michael Bennett. Yes please.

Even the announcers tonight were talking about his hands. THis kid is a freak. Watt may have been physically equal to Bosa at this stage in their careers, but not skill wise. One of the plays that impressed me the most though tonight was a run away from him where he tracked down the line for the solo tackle. His reads off the line are amazing. You can tell that he's a level above all the other defenders in terms of instinctively knowing where the ball is going at the snap. Not that the other OH St guys are bums, but he's just special.
I'm doubling down on my original posit that I based this thread on, I really do honestly believe he could have played for the Browns this year and possibly been a starter by midway through the season. If we draft him next year and turn Armonty and Kruger back to 4-3 DE's we might be able to do something defensively. God I just hope whoever drafts this kid doesn't say hey I know let's make him a standup 3-4 Jack! Indy ruined Bjoern Werner doing that who was also the best DE in football for two years.

Will we be picking low enough as he seems to be going top five

I don't know if we'll pick at 1 or not, that's where he might go. But I think it's reasonably assurable we'll be picking top 5

No thanks, Jar Jar.

If you're satisfied with picking a lineman rather than an OLB which is a much bigger need, you can get one of Bosa, Nkemdiche, or A'Shawn Robinson pretty much no matter where you pick.

If the Browns did draft Bosa, Pettine would move him to OLB

well the caveat to that is we go back to the 4-3. It's where our current supposed 3-4 OLB'ers fit better anyway. You draft a player like Bosa you don't shoe horn him into a failed system, I could see us saying hey wouldn't it be great if we dropped 15 lbs off him and made him a standup OLB'er? And it would suck. In any case Bosa could very easily do the 5 tech as OH St has him doing already when they do 3 DL. And he abuses interior lineman just like he abuses tackles. If we pick high we have to pick him, barring major injury he's got a bigger upside than Watt. Watt wasn't this kind of a freak in college, Bosa still has to continue to develop in the Pro's, obviously, and if he does he'll be better than even Watt. Unless he allows some defensive genius to say hey wouldn't it be amazing to turn Bosa into a free safety? Maybe return some punts?.

I know I've been saying for better or worse we're stuck with Pettine for at least 2 more years until we can fire him without repercussions to the Browns brand/franchise. But if he were to do that.......................get out. I wouldn't even let him pack up his stuff.

He's probably going in the top 3. We're bad, but we probably won't be that bad.
