Jonathan Paul Manziel

The Browns Board

  • The positives:

    • Energy - especially evident in barking out the playcall in the huddle.
    • Command - see above, really took charge; not one delay of game.
    • Mechanics - pretty solid... even on the run, but got into a back-foot mode for a bit in the 2nd half and most sailed high.
    • Controlled - until the very end, when shots were mandatory, he never put the ball in danger.
    • Poise - in-game and post-game in his presser... in the latter his self-evaluation seemed a great deal more objective than much of what is floating around here.
    • Scrambling - yes, when called for, it's an asset..
    The negatives:
    • Bailing - ... but when scrambling is premature, it costs reads...
    • Touch - all fast balls, a couple fed drops by players too close for fast balls, need to control the adrenaline.
    • Missed reads - three of his best plays were throws on the run after bailing to the very players (MJ, Barn and Duke) he missed early while in the pocket.
It is how JM addresses the last negative that will determine his future. The three plays I mention are the only three I know are valid. I suspect that there are more. I suspect Pet already knows there are more.

JM was good and certainly better than a year ago by a mile, but still not anywhere good enough.

  • Well I guess so. At least Dwayne Bowe caught a pass. This is the first whole game I got to see. We can't get a football package unless you have a dish. Our condo doesn't allow dishes. So Red Zone is all I get usually. I love the Browns no matter what. Think Pettine is too critical and should just let Manziel play. The defense needs to get better but think it's the scheme. They were so much better last year before injuries. Other than that to quote Farmer "there is light at the end of the tunnel"

    Think thats all pretty fair.

Would you keep playing him even if Josh is healthy at this point?

  • He's a career backup at best.

He sees things too late and he has no touch.

He's too damn short and useless in the pocket.

    Start McCown, he's better.

    Z

  • So you are saying to keep McCown in for the rest of the year. Then what? Why not play Manziel and let the fans at least have that. 2-7 isn't going out on a limb playing the young QB

  • Not that threads are controllable, but I was hoping one might actually stick to analyzing what we saw on TNF.

  • Manziel is OK. McCown is better.

    I'm disappointed

Take the damn 6 pack 🙁

    Then what?

Start him again next year with a better team around him.

McCown is pretty good. Most of the rest of the team sucks.

  • Johnny looked very good, I thought. He was not even close to being the cause for the loss. He made several good throws that were dropped, and he's working with a mediocre at best receiving corp.

I agree, McCown is better right now, but neither can overcome the other deficiencies of this team. I think it would be smart to keep playing Johnny for this season to see if he can build on this - it's his 4th start.

  • Manziel faired well tonight

That defense, even with Haden and Quitner, still would've gotten torched.

    Farmer sucks also.

  • Johnny Fucktoy looks very "average"

  • Just face it,,Manziel is a piece of shit.. he blows.

  • The only way Johnny gets better is if he plays. He has shown he can recognize his mistakes both on and off the field and address them. We need to let him play, take the growing pains, and see if he improves enough to be considered the future.

My biggest concern is about the missed reads. Is he missing them because he is too short to see over the line or because he just isn't going through his progressions.

  • Manziel blows.

    Farmer blows.

Hopefully 9-7 gets us in the dance.

9-7 lol not with this circus

  • Not sure how you can say JFF "blows" when he is playing with next to nothing.

  • Fuck Marshall Faulk, Eisen & the whole damn band of nfl network. "I know it all cause I was great in my time so let me tell you how its done & then flip flop" Fucks. All these fucks have spent plenty of time in a pocket themselves, Fuck you.. Pet was handed a Flip playbook & stated he wanted more involved in the offense.(stick to your fucked D issues) All your roster QB's run designed to be on time patterns. When the play gets extended Pet calls the play broken if it is not designed. We know it as Johnny Football & Johnny cant be Johnny with this staff. If you design a roll out it is designed to be protected, that what Pet wants. Call it what you want but the D is losing games & soon Jobs..

  • Not a huge Manziel fan, but I thought he played pretty well, overall. He will probably not be a great qb in the NFL, but at this point, a great qb isn't going to help us. We need to scrap the entire defense...change the whole philosophy.....because honestly...this defense sucks. We have some good offensive players, but not nearly enough of them. Pettine is supposed to be a defensive guru...I haven't seen any proof of this. I have a feeling there are big changes coming at the bye.

McCown plays with the same guys and is better.

And Johnny doesn't look like he has anything so special that he has to be played in spite of not being the best QB on the roster.

Have some pride and play the better QB, the starter of the future is not on this roster, but McCown can give you a couple good years.

    Z

  • Agreed. Play the best QB on the roster and try to win that day's game. I know it is apples and oranges, but the same logic would dictate sitting Joe Haden the rest of the year so we can see what we have in Justin Gilbert.

And to all the people who think it is fun to watch Johnny football. Is it more fun to watch Johnny play like Johnny and be crushed by Cincy, or watch Hoyer "hand off 45 times", as that buffoon Chuck Booms referred to it, and crush Cincy? Me, the most fun you can have is TO WIN. Remember, we were LOSING at halftime despite that awesome first half of football from Johnny.

  • tour - I think you have it pretty spot on. The last sentence is what people need to realize - it was nowhere near good enough. And he is not the best QB on the roster. I thought one replay on the pass that hit Gabriel in the knee looked like the ball was tailing down to the right, not saying that it shouldn't have been caught. I thought he missed a touchdown to Barnidge being late with the ball he threw high.

But, and sorry to digress, the image that will stick with me the most was the one from behind the bench with McCown and Manziel sitting there and McCown still looked so much bigger than Johnny even without the pads that Johnny had on!
