Wasn't sure on the title, just go with it πŸ˜‰

Basically, I was having a think, as you do, about the social policies of the republicans. There's a base of the support - we've seen examples here - that are very anti certain parts of the population; LGBT predominantly, but also it seems a lot of that base would not look to fondly on what they would also describe, for want of a better word, as 'freaks', and by that I'm thinking goths with their eye-liner, metrosexual Tiny Canadian Pussy Douche types etc. You've also got the pro-choice crowd in there as well.

The point I'm getting at is, you've got a lot of potential voters that are voting almost exclusively democrat, based on issues that the republican party could very easily drop without losing any votes. Whether you like it or not, the majority of the country is pro-gay, pro-abortion-in-circumstances, pro-weed, for example. The first two cats are already out of the bag, so to speak, and the third won't be long, and none are going back in.

So, instead of wasting times, and losing votes fighting losing battles that the majority don't want fought, the republicans would be better served focusing on economic and other traditional conservatism - lower taxes, smaller government etc. that isn't going to immediately alienate a large block of voters, many of whom might actually vote republican.

Anyway, just my musings, I'm not sure to what extent my impressions are accurate - what do y'all think?

I added the y'all to sound more american, I hope you appreciate it πŸ˜‰

Delete this post before Cal sees it...... any moderate republicans on any issue get burnt at the figurative stake by the Tea Baggers.

Point I agree with. The older social conservative generation is a dying breed. The anti-gay, anti-weed, hardcore anti-abortion, Bible thumping group is becoming a minority more and more each year.

The Republicans will go extinct in as early as the next decade if they don't change their focus.

Many people want smaller government and some of the other platforms, but they do not want the regressive social ideas.

Okay, but your conclusions are giant jumps from the truth.

Being against a radical, offensive change to the defination of real marriage...

          is not being "anti-gay".

We Americans are very tolerant. Gay whatever, they are free to do whatever, as long as they are not

          intruding on others' rights.

For abortion, it's offensive - there are strict limits to what most Americans will accept in terms of emergency

          legit reasons for it.

Which is extremely rare. Rare as in, more than extremely. Opinions sway with the times. There are times when

public opinion will trend upwards in favorability on an issue, then sway the reverse direction as time goes on,

and an acceptability of limited parts of an issue, is pushed into complete and open warfare - unrestricted.

Civil unions were the answer - as disgusting as the whole issue is, I saw no problem with that. Gay people have

          rights too.

But........ that wasn't good enough. Even if you made civil unions with the same exact rights of real marraige,

which is impossible, considering real marriage easily results in children of the two married man and women...

and is impossible with the gay whatever garbage they want to call it outside of coopting "Marriage"...

but the culture war by the left knows no bounds.

Like weed - most people are tolerant of that. But make it legal for everybody to grow, which will cause

serious criminal trespassing problems? Hell no.

The majority of Americans are tolerant, but that doesn't NOT mean they don't want battles fought over the

never-ending push to the extremes of issues by the left.

All that is, is wishful thinking by the left. More and more, this country is being split down the middle, and the

folks squarely in the middle are not going to just turn into leftwing zealots because the liberals want them to.

as president, JFK and the dirtbag LBJ. DEM

          Then Nixon and Ford REP

          dirtbag Jimmy stupid Carter DEM

Excellent Ronald Reagan and fuddyduddy Bush sr. REP

          Then Bill Clinton - DEM

          Then Bush W. - REP

then, the marxist garbage ObaMao - DEMCOMMIE

The American people keep adjusting course to try to stay on the right course.

Right now, the leftist asswipes are taking America farther off course to the left than

          ever before.

The illegal alien movement is just a spamming of our electoral process - to change the

demographics to have a majority totally dependent on the public welfare system -

tipping the scales to the dems. Of course they are illegally voting, just as the dems

are frantically fighting voter id laws - to support illegal voting.

The ONLY thing I can't stand for is abortion. I don't know how many of you leftys have kids. Probably none of you. But when I look at mine I think their lives and futures are worth fighting for. Most liberals would probably consider fighting for those that can't fight for themselves a noble thing. Unless it comes to an unborn child and then it's "fuck em! Scramble their brains and get em out of here. Their lives are MY CHOICE!"

Trans folk are a little weird but they aren't hurting me. As for the bathroom issue, majority rules. If more people don't mind the opposite sex in their bathroom than mind it let them use it. If more people mind than don't...sorry about your luck.

As usual Cysko you entirely miss the point why most people in the middle to center left are for abortion. For the sake of argument we're gonna leave out the far left here cause none of us is that. The far left gets accused of being zealot baby killers, like they're annoyed when they see a pregnant woman...why hasn't that been aborted!!! Again for the sake of argument, we're going to assume that's exactly why far left people are pro abortion....cause they love them some baby deaths. But why is most of the country who are predominantly in the middle, more or less still for abortion rights?

I wish some of you conservatives would understand that the VAST majority of people who are pro choice could care less if ZERO abortions happened per year. You all have categorically and intrinsically misunderstood what "pro choice" means to most of America.

Agree abortion is a platform the republicans can stick to, some of the other stuffs they'll have to toss out in the coming years.

They will likely never outlaw all abortions though, maybe try to take baby steps like only making it legal in the first trimester.

Personally, I'm up for allowing first trimester abortions and leaving the moral choice up to the individual - while continuing to prohibit state+federal gov't funding for them.

I say go ahead and make it perfectly legal for any reason before the heart starts beating. That's roughly six weeks. After that...you're stuck. Sorry about your luck. Should have acted faster.

What say that one of the parties stands for things that are important to you Okay?

And let's say they oppose things that are very important to you.

If you must give up your ideals so that a party with a particular name is successful why vote?

Because that party no longer has any meaning. Either way.

The majority of the party doesn't go this way - they take the hard line. No abortions period. Not even if you were raped by your dad and the child will be born with down syndrome.

Yes the party's are always diverse to an extent.

The republicans this year are mostly different in terms of foreign policy, tax plan, etc.

Generally they've been pretty strict on the social stuff, despite the majority of the population shifting left on social issues.

I mean I would vote for a republican despite the fact I support gay marriage, am pro-choice to the extent I described, and pro-recreational weed. But it kind of helps that I'm not gay, not a woman, and don't smoke weed πŸ˜‰

The core ideals of the republicans will shift towards a fiscal conservative approach over worrying so much about social things, IMO.

Party's change their platform all the time - as time goes by things change. The population is shifting left on the social side of things very, very, very fast.

Sorry buddy, but that "having your own opinion" bullshit doesn't fly here in the hyper-partisan U.S. of A.

And let's say they oppose things that are very important to you.

If you must give up your ideals so that a party with a particular name is successful why vote?

Because that party no longer has any meaning. Either way.

The core ideals of the republicans will shift towards a fiscal conservative approach over worrying so much about social things, IMO.

Party's change their platform all the time - as time goes by things change. The population is shifting left on the social side of things very, very, very fast.

Ok well tell us why you support abortions.

I support the womans right to do with her body what she feels is right, keep it or abort it....it's between the woman and her god. Has nothing to do with any of us. It's a fundamental inalienable right for all of us to do with our bodies what we choose. If we take that away from women we're slouching towards what i'm currently observing in parts of the middle east. My only hedge is if women start thinking they can carry late terms and abort "for profit". I know people would say well so what, if it's the womans right to choose it's the womans right to choose whether she profits or not.....all I can say is that it starts to fail the sniff test once women get in their minds that they can get pregnant and then late term abort for profit. That's obviously some modern machination where researchers have come to the conclusion that fetal parts are where it' at. That's where I get off the pro choice wagon.

In the end this is why we need more than two parties. Two parties cannot encompasse all of our beliefs about how this society should be run. Frankly it's a political sham that there isn't a party that caters to center left and a party for center right.

I have a 20 month old son. I'm pro-choice but not pro abortion and no liberal is pro abortion. What I find most amusing is the pro life crowd isn't really pro-life, you all are pro birth. After a lot of these kids are born the Republicans want to yank the social programs that help support those same kids that may have otherwise been aborted. "You will birth that child and once they are born if you don't have the means you're on your own". Genius.
