  • They really pay him 6.5? That's ridiculous.

Regardless, coaches love to coach. They're driven. They wanna compete and they wanna win. Tennessee gave ole Derek Dooley the severance package of a lifetime. He could be on a beach sipping margaritas every day. You know what he's doing? Coaching receivers for the Cowboys.

You think if we buy Pettine out this year that he wouldn't immediately go get another football job? Isn't sitting around at home more "cush" than working 16 hour days in New Orleans or wherever? Sure it is. But he's going to coach football because he loves it.

Does Gruden want it enough to leave broadcasting? Let's find out.

I'd love gruden here, but you have to fire Pettine before you get your answer. Can't start calling anybody until he's gone.

Sure you can.......you dont have to fire Pettine to start looking.....and you can call anyone, provided they aren't under contract with another team......

And....if you want.....you can even contact employed Coaches to discuss HC jobs, provided they aren't already HC's.......

Need current team's permission to talk to any NFL coach under contract...

Came across a fairly interesting article on searching for HCs and GMs...

    On the Hunt for Greatness

When teams begin firing coaches and front office staff—as the Colts, Lions and Titans have already done—headhunters like Jed Hughes are called in to help them fill the positions. Inside the search for the next great coach or GM

Yes and No.....for lateral moves you need permission.....and promoting a position coach to Coordinator, you need permission...

But ANY coach getting PROMOTED to Hc....can talk w/o permission.....anytime.....

So what are the rules for NFL teams allowing their assistant coaches to talk to other teams about jobs? The rule is pretty simple. A team can’t block an assistant coach, including a coordinator, from interviewing for and accepting a job as a head coach. All other moves, including from assistant coach to coordinator, can be blocked.

Obviously, if we ask for permission, while Pettine is still here,,,,then that would get out and create bad PR....but it is allowed....

  • We're saying the same thing... permission cannot be denied in promotion situations, but still must be sought.

And, yes, once asked, leaks tend to increase exponentially...

  • guys, legit coaches...that will go to a team for no other reason than to win with that team and for that city...aren't going to go there without a 4-5 year plan. No coach is coming here knowing he won't get halfway into that plan. Nobody. Only people that will come here are CFL and college coaches wnting to get their dicks wet in the bigs.

Inconceivable how some of you don't understand that. You think we can just recycle coaching staffs every 1-2 years. Marvin Lewis has been on the hotseat with that fanbase for like a decade. Reason the Bengals are top of the North right now is that ownership doesn't give a shit what feckless fans want.

They're probably cool with getting canned 1-2 years in, they're still paid for the 4-5 years anyway 😉

Not in the case of a coach like Gruden. He doesn't want this kind of debacle on his record. Look at some of our past hires that were considered by the league as promising young talent. Mangini has barely been heard of, same with Chud. Isn't SHurm a coordinator somewhere?

Marvin Lewis has also only had 3 sub-.500 seasons in his entire career.

There's a difference between being on the "hotseat" for having a .500 season and what we currently have.

Someone also tried to equate Mike Pettine to Ron Rivera the other day, talking about how Carolina almost fired him and now look at them. The situations aren't even close.

Reportedly, he's one of, if not the highest paid broadcaster/announcer at ESPN. That's the beauty of the gig he's got. He's perfectly happy to keep broadcasting games but if the right situation comes along he has the out to take the HC job somewhere. Is our job the right situation for him?? Who knows...maybe it is. He's going to want full control and can't blow him out in 2 seasons like everyone else.

  • Plus he gets free speed passes to Disneyworld...

I think Chris Berman wipes his ass with $6.5mm.

  • Great insight on Manziel by Gruden on Clev.com. Said if you stick with him you will be glad you did. He said he has the talent to be a good N.F.L. q.b. Pointed out reminded him of Farve who had a lot of the same issues when he first came into the league.

It would be interesting to see who would win an election in Ohio between Gruden and THE Joey Bosa after they're done walking on water.

Just out of curiosity, what young QB did Gruden ever make a star out of in Oakland or Tampa? Seems to me he counted on veteran QBs in their mid 30s like Rich Gannon and Brad Johnson. I say this because I always read and hear what a genius he is with young QBs.

When Tampa won the Superbowl, 4 of their TDs came from their defense if memory serves me right. Interestingly enough, their opponent didn't make the Superbowl until the first year after Gruden departed. I know some will be chomping at the bits to remind me that Gruden was responsible for 2 different offenses in that 1 Superbowl. Fair enough; but that didn't stop Monte Kiffen's Defense from outscoring both of them.

When you are a high paid announcer on MNF, you can proclaim anything you want. And if your degree is in communication like chucky, you can make it sound true.

Very true. I LIKE the guy and find him very entertaining. My comment was aimed more at people that over-celebrate his heroics with young QBs.

I hear ya. I wasn't trying to be critical of your post. More like piling on...lol

  • Right......the ole "Grudens Quarterback Camp" is fun to watch, but nothing more than another TV show for the masses......but it seems that it HAS given him "guru" status, even though he's never really developed a top QB.....

Exactly, I love that show. The Kardashians are lucky that show isn't year round or there would finally be something competing with those brats in the ratings.

  • The Legends Football League can be entertaining too...in it's own right
